Which port in Ontario 1917-1919
« on: Sunday 23 October 05 00:45 BST (UK) »
Hi All

Have found ancestors who married in UK in 1917 and have a child born in Windsor, Essex County, Ontario around 1918, and my direct line in 1919.  What ship and what port would they have sailed from and to for Windsor?  Was it direct or via Ellis Island?  Have tried some net resources but meeting a dead end.

Any info appreciated.

Many thanks

John Rowley

Hi

It's impossible to say for sure what port they might have used. They might have come in to Montreal or Quebec or yes, New York (Ellis Island) or... it's pretty hard to say for sure. Just pick ones that seem most likely and go from there

Ellis Island is online so you can go and search. Use http://www.stevemorse.org/ for best results.

For Canada, they are not online and are not indexed. So you have to know a date - a month and year at the minimum. Ships are on microfilm in order of arrival date. If you want to order filmed passenger lists (remember they aren't indexed!), a  list of NAC microfilm numbers for
passenger lists to Canada 1865-1922 can be found at

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/filmnos_can1865.shtml

You might want to look at a new site http://shipslists-online.rootschat.net/ it has links and suggestions for Canada and USA immigration

Hello John:
They could have come to Halifax, Nova Scotia as well. Try the national archives Canada site as they do have a list of some passengers that came to Canada. It may take a while but you could try looking at ship's passenger records.  The good news is if they came to Quebec city or Montreal you would only have to search for about 5 months as the river was frozen in the winter !!

I came to Canada from England with parents in 1963 and we came by boat from Liverpool to Montreal, Quebec.  We had to get off the boat in Quebec City to go through customs then we got back on the boat and sailed to Montreal. From there we took the train to Calgary Alberta.
