Robert Roy the First, Corporal in the 75th British Royal Highland Regiment of Foot, 9th Battalion, was born in the Park of Keir Village, Dunblane Parish, Perthshire, Scotland, on May 3, 1781 and christened May 8th. Besides his years in the military, he also worked as a hand loom weaver in the linen industry in Perthshire, Scotland. Rob and Frances Gentle Roy had at least 14 children. The first three were born in an unknown village in Kilmarnock Parish, Ayrshire, while he was in the military, and the rest were born back in Dunblane. The family also lived and worked in Doune and Deanston villages in a neighboring parish, Kilmadock, in the weaving industry.

His father was William Roy III (b. 8 Feb 1741 Middle Cambushinie, Dunblane) and his mother was Margret Logan (b. 5 Apr 1734, St. Helena Island, Glenluce-Inch, Wigtownshire, Scotland).

He was buried in the "Doune Church Yard", Old Kilmdock Cemetery, Kilmadock Parish, Perthshire, with his wife Frances. While his exact death date is unknown, a possible death date has been confused with another Robert Roy (b. 31 May 1779, also in Park of Keir, Dunblane Parish, who passed 16 Nov 1840 in Dunblane) whose father was John Roy, of Park of Keir Village, Dunblane.

Frances was alone with their children in 1841 and 1851 censues. Robert was either deceased or had re-enlisted in the military and was away on active duty. Their family survived the Highland Potato Famine 1846-1856. Three adult children immigrated to Australia and one went to America.
