The cable news of the loss of the tramp steamer Thistlemore upon the English coast (when the vessel blew up and foundered, and 21 of the crew were drowned) is of local interest. Mr John Black, of Timaru Road, took a particular interest in the building and trial of thia steamer some years ago, during his trip Hume. The explanation of Mr Black’s concern for the' Thistlemore is that his brother is manager for the firm of Allan, Black and Co., the Sunderland shipbuilders. The Thistlemore was launched at Sunderland during Mr }ohn Black’s sojourn in England, and thence towed to Hartlepool, where her engines were installed. Subsequently Mr John Black attended the ceremonial lunch aboard and participated in the trial trip. The Thistlemore was a fine steamer of 7000 tons, and had made one trip to Australia. The firm of Allan, Black and Co. also own the Thi’stledhu (Dhu being Gaelic for Black), and this vessel has figured in several international episodes.. During the mutiny of the Russian Black Saa fleet the Thistledhu was retained at Sebastopol by the British Government for some time for the purpose of transporting the British residents should a bombardment have taken place. The latest enterprise of the Sunderland firm is the building of two steamers upon the Italian Government’s charter, for the conveyance of Italian emigrants the United States.
