DORMAN Rotherhithe - Completed
« on: Saturday 30 September 06 04:01 BST (UK) »
Hello

A cousin has sent me an unconfirmed sighting of my GG GF Jacob Gowland Dorman in the 1841 Census:

Thomas Dorman    abt 1777      Rotherhithe     Surrey
Margaret Dorman    abt 1811      Rotherhithe     Surrey
Elizabeth Dorman    abt 1832      Rotherhithe     Surrey
Jacob Dorman    abt 1834      Rotherhithe     Surrey
Barbara Dorman    abt 1837      Rotherhithe     Surrey

I've not been able to find any trace of Jacob in the IGI, or anywhere else.  I wonder if any of this family show up in subsequent censuses, or if there is any record of the marriage of Thomas & Margaret?

All of Jacob's children were born in Turkey (1856-1864) so I suspect he may have married there too (wife Margaret Asiri Fenwick - can't find her either :()

Thanks!
Jane

Hi Jane

This is the reference number for your 1841 family
HO107/1067/5  84/39  - the family all have a tick in the column "Whether born in Scotland, Ireland or Foreign parts" (as do most of the families surrounding them)

I cannot find anyone in any other census.

Trish

Thats Folio 44 .... the Enumerator seems to have used the Column as a Checklist, altho there is one S used - S, I or F - was the official entry denoting born in Scotland, Ireland or Foreign Parts.

The 'Born in County' column says NO for the whole family ...

Thanks Ricky, that is my gg uncle, so I assume that one or both of his parents were deceased by 1871.  Certainly Jacob (the father) is listed as deceased on his daughter Margaret Jane's marriage cert in 1876.

The only records I have managed to find relate to the children:
Margaret Jane b1856 Constantinople
Jacob b1859  "
Thomas Simon b1861  "
Robert b1863 "

ScRoppers - does the 1841 return indicate who was born in Scotland?  Or does it imply that they all were?  I haven't ventured into the Scottish records yet.

Hi Jadewing
Looking at the census sheet it don't say anyone born Scotland, it just has the box ticked on all the names saying that they could have been born Scotland/ Ireland or Foriegn Parts . It's as Trisha has written down on her reply.
The only other thing on the Thomas Dorman is that he is a blacksmith.

Agreed - none of the Dorman Family are indicated specifically born in Scotland; an individual further down the Page is .... which is why I said its as if the Enumerator was using this column as a check-off list..... but obviously aware of its real purpose.... as he did indicate at least one S ...
