From my earlier posts on
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,457602.0.html i would like to be able to try and find out what Company of the Royal Engineers he was in and went to Gibraltar about 1850-1865. From there i could get his service papers.
I'm trying desperatly to find out detailed military information on Francis George Irwin.
He was born in Armagh, Northern Ireland on 19 June 1828, the son of Robert Irwin, a Sapper in the Royal Sappers and Miners.
His wife was Ellen McAuliffe.
He enlisted in his father's regiment at Chatham, Kent in 1842.
He was then transferred to Gibraltar as a Sergeant in the Royal Engineers. He remained in Gibraltar until he returned to England in 1865 after an intervening posting, possibly in Malta.
In 1866 he moved to Bristol and on 7 May that year he was appointed Adjutant of the 1st Gloucestershire Engineer Volunteer Corps, with the rank of Captain, later Major.
