MARDELL & ROBERTS
« on: Friday 26 September 14 12:41 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am interested in James and Mary MARDELL, who were living in Edmonton, between 1841 and 1891, probably earlier. I believe James was born in Edmonton c1807, to James and Elizabeth MARDEL, the maiden name of his mother not being known. I also believe that his wife Mary was born in Edmonton as Mary ROBERTS, though I can find no evidence of a birth or baptism. Moreover, I can't find any evidence of their wedding. The only wedding I can find for James Mardell is to Mary Ann BIRD, though I know from the birth certificate of one of their children that the former name of the mother was ROBERTS. I would welcome any help in (a) finding a record of the MARDELL-ROBERTS marriage, and (b) the birth/baptism of Mary ROBERTS.

In 1851 there is a gentleman added on the bottom of their census entry John Roberts 75 from Bedfordshire.

I was thinking with the name Roberts he could be Mary's father but no relationship is given and it says unmarried for him  :-\

Might be a coincidence with the surname or he could have been an uncle?  Clutching at straws here but might be worth tracing him back if possible.

There's a marriage 5th September 1824 at St.Andrew, Enfield (Enfield runs into Edmonton)

John Roberts - widow - to Anne Bird

Maybe Mary was born a Bird but brought up with the name Roberts.

Have you got the Mardell / Bird marriage cert to see if she was a widow, maiden name Roberts, or not?

Sorry, just seen, it was pre 1837.

I don't think so, as both threads have generated new leads. Whilst I knew that John Roberts appeared on the 1851 census, I had no idea that he was also on the 1841 census. My search engine did not group the Mardells and Roberts together for 1841. Moreover, this is the first that I have heard of Elizabeth Roberts, aged 20 in 1841. I have no idea what relation she is to any of the others.
