Hi Larkspur,

re: Antliff.    Joseph Antliff, born 1843 in Leicester ( sorry, not Nottingham as I said earlier) married Agnes Theresa Pettit a.k.a. Mary Agnes Pettit from Southampton, in London 1864 and died 1902. Joseph's father was William, a Tailor, born 1809 in Newark and siblings were William, Henry, James and Sarah Ann. The family appear in the Strand area on the 1851 & 1861. Joseph's son, William was born in 1868. William married Lydia Phipps in 1892 and died in 1914. Joseph and Agnes appear to have parted company as he next appears on the 1891 with a ' wife ' , Elizabeth, and a 14-year old son, George. I haven't taken much interest in them as, although they are a ' bit of a pain ', they are nowhere near as big a problem as other lines in the family who take up all my time !

Rayson site if your friend is interested. Contact used to be as follows, so hope it is still the same. christopher.rayson[at]ntlworld.com. If not, then try Google for the site details. My PC lost everything not long ago including my address book !!!

Regards, BCR

Hi and thanks for the reply. Suspect there may be an Antliff connection as you are interested in Nottingham. ' My ' Antliff (Joseph) came originally from south Yorkshire but via Nottingham to London and married Agnes Teresa Pettit who came from Southampton. They are from my mother's line

As far as the Rayson name is concerned, there are many areas where they lived. Mine came from Somerset originally where they are ' very thick on the ground '. There is a family site run by a Chris Rayson - one of the northern sections -and I don't have any of my files with me at this moment. Will come back to you later today with the full information on both names.

Thanks again

Hi Paul J Ballard.
Yes, it was the step-children that led me to them. I am trying to find her maiden name as she seems to have some kind of connection to a Chivers family (the one I am interested in ).  I can't find any evidence of Charles & Eliza having children so there is no birth certificate that will give me her maiden name. In view of the ages of both when they married it is pretty obvious the children were from a former marriage and it must have been hers, and, as you say, Charles died pre-1871. There is a possible later entry for the step-son with the name mis-spelled as Balard. Eliza appears to have been still going strong much later and on one census - think '91 but haven't got my files handy at the moment - she had her granddaughter living with her. Strange, that because the granddaughter's maternal grandmother was a Chivers prior to her marriage !!! and the paternal grandparents had a totally different name - Phipps. If you have anything that would help I will be very grateful.

Hi,
Do you have any more info: e.g. the family member in London and the dates. I have a Mary Gander way, way back in my family so it is just possible there is a connection.

Hi, am looking for Charles & Eliza Ballard. Both born around 1819-1822 in Westminster and East End of London respectively. Do you have anything on them please ?
TIA,

Hi Kath,

Ballard seemed to be a common name;  the cabdriver & wife are the wrong pair, as ages wrong for the 1861 and, according to the 1861, he was a horsekeeper, 2 years older than his wife, so it would be the 2nd pair you have listed. Eliza Ballard - the one I am interested in - was still
' alive & kicking ' on the 1891 so she cannot be the one who died in 1854. I feel the Mary Ann Chivers listed on the 1861 with her brother (?) Frederick is not the one who was the daughter of John & Charlotte Chivers, who didn't  have a son Frederick anyway.  I have the birth certificate of the one I am interested in. Chivers was also a common name and ' Mary Ann ' commoner still ! ' My Mary Ann ' married William Phipps and the other one married the man with the strange name of Trevannian Lowen, therefore they must be two different people. Am rapidly coming to the conclusion this may never be solved, although I will have a look at Suffolk Sue's Frederick Barrard as soon as I get time. Have another task to complete first but will come back to you a.s.a.p. and keep an eye on the postings.

Will also have a coffee but need aspirin to go with it !

Regards, Brenda
