The tennis playing Dransfield sisters of New South Wales (?)
« on: Wednesday 23 September 15 14:30 BST (UK) »
Could anyone help with some biographical information on three sisters who took part in some Australian lawn tennis tournaments, mainly the New South Wales Championships, circa 1890-1900. They are very difficult to track down because contemporary sources only ever referred to them as Miss M. Dransfield, Miss P. Dransfield and Miss S. Dransfield. They might have been immigrants from the British Isles.

I note that this website lists a Mary Dransfield of the winner of the women's singles title at the Sydney tournament in 1894: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney_International However, I don't know the source for that first name.

Any help in identifying these three women would be much appreciated.

J.

"Miss M." (Mary L.) married to Hubert MARSH in 1908

Not lawn tennis, but table tennis, Mary, Marie, and Nellie DRANSFIELD.

Charles and Maria DRANSFIELD had a number of children in NSW that they were unable to name at registration.

Mary Louise MARSH (above) was one of them - her obit:

Nellie and Beatrice

However there is something odd going on here, but not sure what yet. Perhaps more than one family with the same first names.

"With regularly changing exhibitions and a large research library this museum is a hidden gem for sports enthusiasts and tennis fans".     It used to be housed at NSWLTA at White City, but moved along with all of Tennis NSW just prior to the 2000 Olympic Games.

Perhaps an enquiry to the Tennis Museum at Sydney Olympic Park?

Or directly to Tennis NSW http://www.tennis.com.au/nsw/contacts

I was searching info. today about the Dransfield sisters and came across your post.  Here is info from the library of Australian Tennis Museum.  In The Tennis Handbook by Henry Marsh there is reference to two of the Dransfield sisters Sissie and Mary. http://trove.nla.gov.au/work/24250687?selectedversion=NBD9977565
Trove is also a great site to search for newspaper articles that may relate to their careers.
