James Clarke / Clark - looking for sister Ellen
« on: Wednesday 24 May 06 04:36 BST (UK) »
Hello

James Clarke b. 18 AUG 1873 in London, England was a Barnardo home child who left London for Canada in 1890 on the S.S. Parisian. All I know of family in England is that there was a mother and sister there, whom he visited when he went overseas to fight in WW1.

I believe I have found him on the 1881 England census as Jas Clarke. He was a visitor of John and Emma Mosley and family. He did sign documents in Canada as Jas. Clarke.

Found since by Gadget:
RG11/199 Folio 100 page 24
Living as lodgers at 4 Elizabeth Street, St Pancras
Ellen Clark, lodger, mar, 52, laundress, b. Middlesex, St Pancras
Ellen, d, 9, b. St Pancras
James, s, 7,b. St Pancras

(Census looks like 52, but it is 32)

If James Clarke is your relation also, please send me an email.

He states his birthday as august 18th, also, on census 1901
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/ViewFrame.jsp?id=108527&highlight=44
and also Aug 18th on attestation papers...

Do you have his full papers, ( those are just sign-ups) available at collections Canada, as they sometimes contain more family info....?

I take it that the James " E" on attestation papers might be a typo?  J.J.

There are some great researchers who can look through the next censuses and see if that one is still in England for 1891, 1901.....also, if there was a sister, still with the mother, they may find more information for you...
I'll call in the HOME CHILDREN TEAM.... ;D .J.J.

If this is the correct entry for 1911, Palmerston, he also states birth..Aug. 1871...

JJ, where you say James 'E' on his attestation papers, I'm missing it  :P Is this how his name has been written up, ie, James E Clarke? I ask for a reason...there is a Jas E Clarke showing with a London birth place in 1881 in London, staying with grandparents.

Hello JJ and Monica

Monica the index on NA's search sight includes an E. It is most likely an error. I forgot about this request. I was trying to look forward for his sister and family. I have since seen his war records and i will modify my original post to update the birthday to 18th. I think on other documentation, I've seen 20 but can't remember now. Or maybe typo. Thanks for catching it JJ.

Gadget did help me further, as I found on his WW1 records that he was born on Drummond Street. Not knowing London, I was completely out of sorts. See

Still hoping someone on his sister's side might parchance read my post and I can go forward and find his sister Ellen.

Cheers & thank you,
Linda

Hi, Linda...
I know where Ii 've seen your postings, now, on the Canada board once in a while...I thought the name looked familiar...
I searched the name on rootschat to see if there were other postings...and none came up, so I figured it was unanswered.

Anyhoo...maybe put a link to it on this thread...

I see you've changed the subject line as well... :D   J.J.
