Where did you get his birthyear and birthplace from?

On another other post you say

I am able to track them (chase William more like) on the Census returns but all the pointers for ages and places lead me to one of those fab Ancestral brick walls!

Which censuses do you have him on as I cannot find a match in either the CI or England

Hi There Carole
He pops up in the English 1891, 1901 and 1911 census records - the first two with "wife" Jessie or Jesse and children.

Surname is MESSERVY although there are some slight variants on spelling.  I managed to find on a CI census a William MesseROY who was a scholar born in St Martins but he was visiting.

He made the Times newspaper in 1902 when his first wife Ada tracked him down and divorced him - this is where I got the Guernsey marriage info from.  Just needing to know any info on his parentage from any of his marriage certs

Ever the oprimist  ;)
Kindest regards

Right - found the 1891 - indexed as Messerle and Jessie on her own in 1901.  William and Jessie are living apart in 1911.  William shows himself as married and Jessie (indexed as Masseroy) classes herself as a widow which is interesting - I bet she wishes she'd killed him!!

No marriage on freebmd to Jessie but this one in 1904

and his son - also William Ernest in 1915

Hi Carole

Oh yes he certainly was acolouful character!  One of the courses of death on his death cert states toxaemia the other I haven't yet figured out.  I have applied for the 1904 marriage certificate to see if there are any details as to his father at all - I am fast starting to think he made his name up.

Whilst he was married to Ada they had a child also called William Ernest who died aged 4 - maybe this "tipped" him over???

However going by the Times article I am optimistic that I will find his birth and first marriage certificate .... it's all out there somewhere, but what with registration districts and mis transcriptions plus all the variety of debates on their ages to say it's a challenge is an understatement!
Did you find the 1871 census wherby there is a transcribed Messeroy aged approx 8 born in St Martins but was visiting on that night!  I have a gut feeling he may be the same as my ancestral rogue!

Many thanks

... and just to add to the confusion, there is an entry on the Jersey Archive site for a William Ernest Messervy, born 16th Oct 1884, baptised 13th Jan 1885, the son of William Ernest Messervy, an insurance agent, and Ada Jane Le Riche.

Yep and where did William Ernest senior come from?  He is my brick wall at present!

William also had another child called William Ernest Messervy in the 1890's with my great great grandmother Jessie which makes it even more interesting -
I will not be defeated with this mystery ....
