FREE Gravestone Photographs for Midlothian
« on: Saturday 12 March 11 12:00 GMT (UK) »
I found this site today 'Gravestone Photographic Resource' www.gravestonephotos.com/index.php which offers a free copy of any of the grave monument photographs that have been taken by volunteers. Not sure why I have never seen this before as it covers a number of cemeteries in the Lothian counties! It looks to be a great service by volunteers  :) The lists of churches covered for Midlothian are:

Cramond Kirk Parish Church, Cramond
Dean Parish Church, Edinburgh
St John and St Cuthbert (join graveyard) Parish Church, Edinburgh
St Nicholas Buccleuch Parish Church, Dalkeith

The current churchyard or municipal cemetery sites that have been fully or partially indexed can be viewed here www.gravestonephotos.com/public/cemeteries.php

Clear instructions are included on the site for requests.

I've added this link to the Midlothian Resources page www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,504605.0.html for future reference. A number of West Lothian cemeteries are also included.

Oooh!  Jumps for joy.
Not looked yet but this could be promising for me.
I'm sure I've got at least 2 rellies buried in the Dalkeith Cemetery.  Pretty sure they are Borthwicks but need to search my records to check before I get too excited - I think there are 3 cemeteries / churchyards in Dalkeith.

Thanks for the potentially useful links Monica.

Never seen this site before Dave, until today. Huge coverage of English cemeteries also. Hope they will expand their volunteer base for Scotland!

It's a great site isn't it.  :) Very easy to use and very generous to provided free photographs.

I believe they take 'donations' from anyone who has transcribed MI's too, so the site is growing all the time. I posted a link to it a while ago but I can't find it anywhere - there was a bit of discussion about it too.  ;)

It's very worthwhile having this stickied somewhere as it covers England as well.

Hi Ruskie

I was going to let the relevant Mods know about this site (in case any are not aware of it (like me  :P) so that it  can be stickied where relevant.

Just looking through it just now.
Brilliant alphabetical list of surnames too, linking to all recorded burials for each surname.

I'm so glad it's snowing.  Have an excuse to stay in and play hunt the deid folk.

Stay warm Dave  ;)

From the West Lothian board, a RC member, Meg (Cauther Lassie) has contributed a huge amount of her work for West Lothian which is due to come on to the site in months to come www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,520026.0.html

Thanks Monica.  :)

I like the way you can search by surname and forename, cemetery and grave etc....

There's only one thing I'm not sure about -: when you search for a surname alphabetically you get a list of surnames in rows, but some names also have their name singly as well as included with the other names.

I don't think I've explained that very well  :-\ ...

Take the surname Wade as an example ... there are several surnames beginning with "Wa ..". The first row lists the names beginning with Wac.. , then Wad.. then there are 5 rows and each one has only the surname Wade, then the next list continues with names beginning WA.. and it also includes Wade again, plus other surnames beginning with Wa.  :-\

I'm a bit puzzled about why they list some of the surnames alone yet also include it in the general list under Wa..

Can anyone work out the reason for this?

I can see what you mean Ruskie - you have to look to understand! I think it is just a tidy-up that is required on fields/headings. The Wade database of names and entries looks to be the same on all the references.
