Title: On This Day in June........Tell us about your ancestors' anniversaries
Post by: genjen on Friday 31 May 13 20:52 BST (UK)
These months don't half go quickly, don't they.

So, here we are in June so please carry on with all your ancestral BMDs and other special occasions.

I have only one birthday to mark today and that is of a 1st cousin x 3, Elspet Cruikshank Raitt, who was born in Monymusk on 1st June 1874.

Today my lovely daughter is entering her first 10k race and just to make things more difficult for herself she has opted for one which goes across open fellside as well as tarmac roads. I shall be there, cheering her on and making sure there is a photographic record of the occasion. ;)

On this day in 1783, Esther Charlesworth, my great X 3 grandmother was baptised at Holy Trinity, Holmfirth.
She was born at Cliff in Wooldale to JOshua Charlesworth and Martha Thorpe at unknown date
She married in 1802 to Jonas Cook at All Hallows, Almondbury, occupation unknown
They had 7 children of whom 2 died young
Esther died in Holmfirth in 1826 and Jonas died at Upper Bridge in Holmfirth in 1829

Also

On this day in 1921 my great grandfather Edward Jackson died of Cancer of the Oesophagus
He was aged 61. He had been a mine manager at Bredbury, and previously Breightmet and Pendleton.

While an under manager at Hyde Colliery in 1889 when there was a terrible explosion , killing 23 people. He had to give evidence at the inquest over several days. He found some of the bodies himself

A match was held between Newton Heath and Ardwick in aid of the families (Man U v Man C now) at Bellvue under floodights, and 10,000 attended.

Edward was buried at St Mark's Bredbury.

HIs Widow Ann, 12 years his senior (though she must have fibbed about her age as always too young on censuses when with him) lived until 1940

My gt. uncle, Richard Henry Kingsman, born in 1908 in Kensington;  son of John and Annie (nee George). He married Kathleen Mary Haddow in 1937 and died in 1949. He worked for a surgical instrument maker.

On 1st June 1828 my 4xG grandfather Henry Downs died in Bo'ness. He was a baker and married to Janet Richardson. I'm sure there were more children but the only ones I have so far are Jane (my 3xG grandmother), Robert, Henry and Richardson. My Downs are still a work in progress but I think he was born in Falkirk. While in Bo'ness last year hunting down the grave of my 4xG grandparents, I came across that of his grandson, could only be him as I am sure there wouldn't be many with the first name Walkinshaw. This grave told me that this grandson lost 5 children between 1848 and 1858.

In 1862 my 3 x great grandfather, Joseph Sewell, died in Shoreditch, London, aged 90.  He was born in Appleby, Westmorland, into a family of coopers, a trade which he continued after he came to London some time in the late 1700s.

My aunt, Doris Giovannelli Wilson, married Stanley Arthur Whitnell Wilson in 1929, in West Ham.  They were not related, so she didn't change her name on marriage.

John Henry Conquest, a second cousin 2x removed, died in 1954, at the Royal Northern Hospital, Islington, London, aged 79.

Frederick Thomas Ransom, eldest son of my great great grandparents, was born 2nd June 1850 in the Fingal Valley in Tasmania.

He took over the running of the family farm, Killymooon after his father retired to Launceston Tasmania.  He'd been living on an adjacent farm Millbrook when first married.  The Ransoms were a farming family and seem to have been involved in various properties up and down the valley.

When his first wife died, in 1911 aged 60,  he married her sister.    (something which happened a few times in my family.

Fred died in 1933

On this day in 1877 my great great aunt Alice Elizabeth Holmes married Cornelius Dagwell (aka John) in Kings County New York.

Alice had been born in Birmingham in 1851 to William Holmes a brushmaker and Caroline nee Whateley

Like several siblings she emigrated, travelling on the John Foster junior in 1870 Liverpool to New York.

After the marriage Cornelius was know as John, and they had a daughter Ella May Dagwell b 1879.

Alice also looked after her younger brother Samuel who was sent to New York at age 14 after his mother's death.

I cannot find John after 1888 or Alice after 1892. A newspaper article suggest John may have run off with another man's wife. Their daughter turned up in New Hampshire and married there.

Photo is Alice

I'm not sure on what day they actually married but on 2nd June 1784 my 5xG grandparents Peter Ross and Agnes Mason gave up their names for proclamation to be married and gave two shillings and sixpence to the poor box. They married in Colinton, then a small village, now a suburb of Edinburgh. Peter was 24 and had been born just outside Edinburgh and baptized, like all his siblings, in St. Cuthberts, also known as Westkirk. Agnes is a brickwall at the moment. Susanna, their second daughter and third of their six children was my 4xG grandmother.

Not many today, but a deluge of my and my husband's ancestors tomorrow. ::)

On 3rd June
Selina  Gibson (nee Benson) my aunt (and my dad’s eldest sister) was born in Glasgow in 1908.  Her father was a musician and travelled around with various orchestras, although some time after her birth and before May 1910, the family moved to Manchester where they stayed, although their father kept on travelling and died in Scotland in 1926, leaving a widow and 6 children.

Agnes Mumby (nee Benson) my g.g.aunt was baptised at Ireleth Chapel, Ireleth, Dalton in Furness, Lancashire in 1860.  Her husband James William Mumby was my g.g.uncle before they married, as they were sister and brother respectively of my g.grandfather and my g.grandmother

Sarah Charlotte Mumby my 2 x g.g.aunt (and aunt of Agnes Mumby’s husband above) was baptised at St Botolph’s Church, Boston, Lincolnshire in 1824

Margaret Myre my 7 x g.g.aunt was baptised at Whicham, Millom, Cumberland in 1676

My great grandfather James Currie Draffan was born on 5th June, 1846 in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire and he was baptised on 13th June 1846  (my birthday).    It is however his father John Draffan I would like to bring back to life by a little imagination and some help from Rabbie Burns.

      "I cheery on did wander:
I thought upon the banks o'Coil,
       I thought upon my Nancy,
And I mind't the witching smile
       That caught my youthful fancy.

At length I reach'd the bonie glen,
       Where early life I sported;
I pass'd the mill and trysting thorn,
       Where Nancy aft I courted:"

                 The Soldier's Return 1793

Having set the scene I ask you all to move forward 48 years to the Spring of 1841.    The Trysting Thorn which Burns has so immortalised was still there and as you can see from a Google Satellite map of Coylton, Water of Coyle still flows from south to north crossing the main road very close to the old Weaver's cottages where lived the young 26 year old John Draffan with his Uncle John Tassie.

Now please take a look at this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coylton      The first coloured picture down on the left is of the Old Manse built in 1839.     Just two years later we find the wee 22 year old lass Agnes Currie employed as a live in Servant to the Minister Alex Duncan and his wife Euphemia.     Just how John and Agnes first met we can only wonder.   Perhaps it was at the Old Kirk or the one that took its place?     They must though have then met at the Trysting Thorn, for Nancy is a nickname for Agnes.

A new Trysting Thorn now grows elsewhere in Coylton, nurtured from precious shoots sent up from the roots of the Old Tree which expired in 1916.    The couple married in Coylton in August 1841 and they were blessed at the end of the following year with the birth of their daughter Jane.  James Currie Draffan came along in 1846 as already mentioned, but sadness was soon to strike the heart of John, for 'Nancy' passed away just two years later.

On this day in 1865, my great grandfather cousin (cousin 2 x removed) was baptised at St Andrew's Worcester

At one point lived in Worcester High Street not far from Edward Elgar
THis may have had some influence as she went on to be a music teacher and formed Miss Alex. Griffin's Banjo, Mandoline and Guitar Orchestra

She held regular concerts with her mostly ex pupils.

Died rather early on 7th June 1904

June 4th -- quite a slew of baptisms today!

In 1814 my 2xGreat Grandmother Matilda Trant was baptised at St Peters Leeds. Her exact birthdate is unknown. She was the daughter of Thomas Trant & Elizabeth Beverley. At the age of 28 she became the second wife of Dr Thomas Wainwright of Barnsley. The couple had 8 children, two of who died in infancy/childhood plus Thomas's two surviving children from his first marriage. She died in 1883 in Birkdale Lancashire.

Also baptised at the same time was Matilda's elder brother Nicholas Trant. He was 3 yrs old at the time. He followed his father into the medical profession and settled in London with his wife Rachel Pariss. They had 5 children, 4 of whom lived to adulthood. He died at the early age of 41

In 1833 my 3 x Great Aunt Charlotte Watson was baptised at Weedon Bec Northants. She was the 7th child but 2nd  daughter of Joseph Watson and his second wife Ann Whiting. She married William Roots of Colchester Essex and had 6 children

In 1854 my 2 x Great Aunt Edith Charlotte Watson was baptised at Holy Trinity Church Marylebone. She was the 2nd daughter of Noah Watson and Mary Ann Clark. She was married twice, firstly to Emery Thomas Humphrey in 1878 with whom she had one son. In 1890 she married a Methodist Minister, James William Haywood and had twin sons and a short-lived daughter. She died in 1842 at the age of 88.

Finally, in 1862 another double baptism of my 1st cousins 3 x removed, Walter & Elliott Andrews at St Saviours, Chelsea. They were the sons of Maria Frances Clark and Alfred Charles Andrews. Walter was 2 yrs old at the time. Elliott died at a year old in 1863.

And now a marriage:

In 1781, my 4 x Great Grandparents John Whiting & Frances Cave married at Braefield-in-the-Green, Northants. John was a wheelwright. They had at least 3 children. They both lived to ripe old ages, John dying in 1843 at the age of 83, and Frances in 1847 at the age of 90.

So many today, my ancestors are below and my husband's will be in the next post.

On 4 June
Selina Benson (my aunt) married William Gibson at St Andrews Parish Church, Blackley, Lancashire in 1938.  When I was about 8 or so (late 1940s) he disappeared, I thought he’d gone to prison but I have no proof and think I must just have overheard something, this was in the time when children were seen and not heard, nor told any family secrets.  Many years later my brother who was 12 years younger than me told me that my aunt had been divorced all those years ago.  What a difference 12 years make, he knew all the family stories that I’d never been told most of them not even particularly interesting.

Martha Ann Brand (my g.g.aunt) married David Lynch at St Matthew’s Parish Church, Ardwick, Manchester in 1884

Ann Middleton  my 2 x g.g.aunt married Joseph Donald Gardner at the Priory Church of St Mary and St Michael, Cartmel, Lancashire in 1860

Clement Tubbs my 4 x g.grandfather was born in Haddenham, Cambridgeshire in 1762.  He was the father of my 2 x g.grandfather’s illegitimate father.  My 2 x g.grandfather knew who his father was and named him on his marriage certificate.

Clement Tubbs my half 2 x g.g.uncle was baptised at Holbeach, Lincolnshire in 1833.  He was a son of my 2 x g.grandfather’s illegitimate father, with his 2nd wife.

Abigail Tubbs my 4 x g.g.aunt was baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Haddenham, Cambridgeshire in 1760.  She was another member of the Tubbs family tree.

Ann Hayes my 3 x g.g.aunt was baptised at St Laurence Church, Frodsham, Cheshire in 1782

William Postlethwaite my 3 x g.g.uncle was buried at St Mary’s Parish Church, Dalton in Furness, Lancashire in 1805.  He was aged 21 months.

Also on 4 June, my husband’s ancestors
James Buckley and Sarah Brierley his 5 x g.grandparents married at St Mary’s Church, Oldham, Lancashire in 1769

Geoffrey Whittaker his eldest half-brother was born in Denton, Lancashire in 1931.  I only knew him as an adult when in his 30s he was still living at home with his father and his stepmother (my husband’s mother) who he hated.  Eventually he moved out and bought his own home.  He used to visit his maternal gran every evening even though she succumbed to Alzheimers and had no idea who he was.  He never married and suddenly moved to an Arab country, where he apparently handed over all his wealth to an Arab family.  He died in Gibraltar some time in the 1990s we think.  No-one in the family knows why, although it was probably his heart as he was known to have heart disease.  No-one knows where he is buried, or what happened to any of his belongings.  His brother (my husband’s other half brother) only found out when he accidentally bumped into a mutual friend some time later.  All very odd.  I have my own opinion of what was happening in his life which I’ve never given, although my father voiced the same opinion to me.

Ann Eleanor Spraggett Binns and Susanna Binns my husband’s 2 x g.g.aunts were baptised at St Phillips Church, Birmingham in 1822.  They were not twins and they were born during the marriage of my husband’s 3 x g.grandmother’s first marriage, prior to her marrying my husband’s 3 x g.grandfather.

Amelia Anne Clark(e) and her twin brother Alfred James Clark(e) my husband’s 2 x g.g.aunt and uncle were baptised at St Mary’s Church, Warwick in 1839.  They are half siblings of the Binns girls above, having the same mother.

Samuel  Dyke my husband’s 4 x g.g.uncle was baptised at Hatton, Warwickshire in 1775.

Jonathan was born in Macclesfield, and was a gentleman.
They had 6 children
Jonathan died at Macclesfield in 1689, Alice died at Alt Hill (Ashton u L) in 1720

June 4th

In 1840, my 3 x Great Aunt Antoinette Louisa Clark was born at 2 Charlotte St. Marylebone London. She was the youngest of 9 children of William Clark & (Judith) Maria Levi/Levy and sadly died at the age of 2 months

In 1849, Eleanor Lewis, widow of my 3 x Great Uncle William Bulloch died at Kirkdale, Liverpool. The death notice in the newspaper gives her age as 66, therefore a birthdate of 1818, but her age on the censues has varied widely, giving birthdates of 1821 - 1831.

Geoffrey Catlow my husband’s 2nd cousin was born in Denton, Lancashire in 1935.  His sister and her husband went to New Zealand in 1963, followed by her parents in 1966 and then Geoffrey in 1971.  Geoffrey and his parents all died in New Zealand.

Ethel Laura Barnett my 1st cousin once removed was born at 23 Rosemary Lane, Canterbury in 1913

Sarah Gaunt (nee Batty) my 4 x g.grandmother was baptised at St John the Baptist Church, Penistone, Yorkshire in 1737

Dorothy Haworth (nee Mellor) my husband’s 2 x g.grandmother died at 12 Emily Street, Ardwick, Manchester in 1868.  The cause of her death was corroding ulcer of rectum 5 years, which sounds extremely painful.  I wonder if it was Crohns or other similar condition.  I’m assuming bowel cancer would have been recognized as such as her husband died of that 18 years later in 1886.  Dorothy was 46 and left 8 children, the youngest aged 6.

Ann Cockett (nee Day) was buried at All Saints Church, Holbeach, Lincolnshire in 1844.  I imagine her parents must have bought her gravestone as it is engraved “In memory of Ann daughter of John and Mary Day and wife of Charles Cockett who died June 1 1844 aged 28.  Right at the bottom of the gravestone and so worn away that it is not visible on the photograph we took, is the name of Ann’s baby daughter who died in January 1845.

Arthur Whittaker & Minnie Dawson my husband’s parents married at St Aidan’s Church, Manchester in 1936.  Arthur Whittaker was a widower with 2 young sons aged 5 and 4.  He was 30 and Minnie was 34 and a spinster.  I’m not sure why she chose to marry a man with 2 children unless she thought he was her only hope.  A couple of years after they married, she had a son who she absolutely adored and doted on, followed, much to her dismay, by my husband 5 years later.  It was not a happy marriage.

John Frederick William Alden my great uncle married Eleanor (known as Lena) Harriet Burns at St John Newington Church, Hull, in 1897.  John is not on the 1901 census, although it’s possible he was at sea.  He drowned at sea in 1906.  His wife was on the 1901 census with a 2 year old son.  It’s possible that she had at least one more child  before her husband’s death. Lena was not on the 1911 census either although there is a John Alden aged 11 in Newlands Orphanage with a younger brother Charles aged 5.  Lena re-married in Hull in 1913 to a widower with 3 children.  Hopefully, if the two boys who were in the orphanage were her 2 sons, she took them with her when she married.   I wonder how she was able to leave the 2 boys at Newlands (if they were her sons) when they weren’t actually orphans.

John Wilkinson and Anne Bell my 8 x g.grandparents married at Holme Cultram, Cumberland in 1673

I have Catlows = some were from Denton, but originated from Ashton under Lyne, back to Jonathan Catlow, curate and schoolmaster of Ashton under Lyne, it seems though that he came from Colne

Elizabeth Simpson married Thomas Broadley 5 Jun 1786 at the parish church in Great Harwood, Lancashire. Since they were Catholic, they had probably already had a Catholic marriage at Dunkenhalgh Chapel. She was his third wife and they had seven children baptized at Dunkenhalgh. He was a calico printer. I have never found when she died. There are other Simpsons at the Chapel but I don't know if or how they were related to Elizabeth. cb

In 1876 my husband's grandmother, Gertrude Elizabeth January, mentioned yesterday, was born at Hauxton, Cambridgeshire.  She was the daughter of John January and Emma Bangle.

Joseph Peppercorn, my 1st cousin 2 x removed, married his first wife, Jane Hassall, in 1892 at St James the Apostle Church, Islington, London.

Louisa Florence Conquest, my 1st cousin 1 x removed, married Oliver George Mew in 1921 at Southwark, London.

On this day in 1879, George Jackson my great great grandfather died aged only 48 at Carlton near Barnsley. He died from Bright's disease, which is a kidney problem with protein in the blood - does not exactly equate to one modern condition.

George was born in 1831 in Macclesfield, Cheshire, son of a coal miner Edward Jackson, who later became a provision dealer.  In 1841 he was living at an Aunt's family house in Derbyshire (Aunt though was absent.

He married Sally Booth in 1850 at St Mary's Stockport  and in 1851 they were living in Marple. He was already working in the coal mines at this stage.
In 1861 he had moved across to Dodworth near Barnsley in Yorkshire and was coal viewer - I suspect he was undermanager at this stage. Sally and the family soon joined him and together they had 9 children though the first 4 died young. Sally died in 1872 of an obstructed bowel, and George remarried an Ann, I have no idea who she was, born in Cheshire he may have married in either county. Then George got an exciting new job and they moved to Carlton also near Barnsley. George commenced the management of construction of a new mine on Lord Wharncliffe's land , known as Wharncliffe Woodmoor mine. It was also known as Carlton main, and operated until the 1960s.

It may not have been the best time to start a new mine as coal prices dropped, but with George's sudden death, in 1881 just the youngest girl was left at home with Ann, her stepmother.

George was buried with Sally at the Church in Dodworth,

Pictures - George, his grave and all that is left of the mine, a memorial to a later disaster

On 6 June
Ethelinda Cockett (nee Wheeldon ) my aunt known as Auntie Linda was born in Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire, in 1909 and was married to my mother’s brother.  In later years she lived in Blackpool and I remember visiting her with my boyfriend (now husband) when I was about 20.  She decided I looked “peaky” and promptly gave me some Tonic Wine.  I didn’t realise it was alcoholic – and quite strong at that 15% and as I’d never drunk any alcohol before,   I certainly wasn’t “peaky” after that.  ::)  ::)

Joseph Pemberton my 3 x g.g.uncle was  baptised at St Oswald’s Church, Lower Peover, Cheshire in 1784

Lettice (Letitia) Stanton my 1st cousin 5 ties removed was baptised at St Nicholas Church, Skirbeck, Boston, Lincolnshire in 1810.  Oddly, Lettice and her sister Leonora and brother Edwin Hammond Stanton appear to have been baptised twice once in Skirbeck, (Edwin originally baptised in New Sleaford and the second time on 19 September 1813 in Sempringham when a younger brother was baptised

John Baxter my 5 x g.g.uncle was baptised at St Andrew’s Church, Heckington, Lincolnshire in 1750

Ann Sharp my 1st cousin 4 times removed was baptised at St Botolph’s Church, Boston, Lincolnshire in 1837

Hannah Middleton my 3 x g.g.aunt was baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Millom, Cumberland in 1820

William Brand my 2 x g.g.uncle was buried at St Denys Parish Church, Sleaford, Lincolnshire in 1824.  He was the 2nd son to be called William, the first William was buried aged 2 days, this 2nd William was 10 when he was buried, and the 3rd William born in 1825 became my 2 x g.grandfather.

My husband seems to be connected to some other Catlows, including a Walter Catlow born about 1850 who married his 2 x g.g.aunt Jane Lees.  I've not researched Walter and I don't think he's connected to the other Catlow mentioned yesterday.

I was going to leave this till later but might not be in, so better chuck them up now.

On 6 June 1884 Hugh Wright was born at Redford, Muiravonside, the first of four children of my great grandmother Elizabeth by her first husband Robert Wright. He would be followed by Elizabeth, John and Robina before Robert died just six years later from pneumonia. Elizabeth remarried several years later, producing one child from this marriage. This child, a daughter would grow up with a different surname to that of her four half siblings. In between these marriages was born, illigitimately, my grandfather, who would have his mother's maiden name as a surname. I know all about Robert Wright's line, thanks to a great grandson of his brother John. I have tracked, thanks to help from MonicaL, the family of her second husband from a large farm estate in Ireland, as far as the USA and goldfields of Australia. However, my grandfather's paternal lineage, I am afraid will remain a mystery that leaves a gaping hole in my research. No father is mentioned on his birth, marriage or death certificates and until I revealed all, not even my mother knew he was illigitimate. Only a seance it appears will reveal the truth.

On 6 June 1910, Jane Heeps Lawson was born in Crosscroes, Muiravonside, the second of three children born to my GG grandmother Hannah and her second husband John Lawson. This John is proving hard to track but it looks like his parents were from Cumberland. Only last week, with some great sleuthing from Gadget, I discovered that he committed suicide when his daughter Jane was just 21.

On 6 June 1840 my great great grandfather Peter Wardlaw was baptized in Whitburn. He had been born on 29 April, the eldest of four children of George Wardlaw and Agnes Torrance. If he had been born just three days earlier he would have shared the birthday of both his grandfather and myself, his great great grandson.

On 6 June 1890, my great grandparents George Wardlaw and Agnes Tweedie married in Armadale. The witnesses were the bride's sister Elizabeth and her maternal uncle William. I think he may have been standing in for her father who was deceased at the time of this marriage. George was the eldest child of the above Peter and his wife Janet Brown and was born just four months after their marriage, meaning his mother was already well pregnant or this was a record breaking short pregnancy. Agnes was the daughter of John Tweedie and Rachel Brown (no relation to the above Janet) and like all but one of her siblings was born in Bathgate. The only exception being her eldest sister Elizabeth, who was born in Fife.
George and Agnes would have a long marriage and produce five daughter's, one of whom was my grandmother and one son. This one son, Peter died young following injuries received in a mining accident and is buried with his parents. Their eldest child Rachel also died young and her daughters were brought up by George and Agnes in the village (in my avatar) and on the very street where years later I would be born.

Photos are of Hugh Wright and his younger brother John and the grave of my great grandparents and Peter Wardlaw their only son.

George Broadley was born 6 jun 1865 in Habergham Eaves and was buried 2 jan 1866, 7 months old in Burnley Cemetery, of Healey Wood. His parents were James Broadley, carter and Ann Turner. James was actually baptized as a Catholic, but his children were brought up Anglican. There were eight children but at least 3, including George, died in a few months between Sept 1865 and Jan 1866.

Grace Broadley was born 6 jun 1868 in Clayton le Moors. Her father Peter was a fireman in the mine at Altham and was one of the few to escape the Moorfields Pit disaster of 1883. Grace's parents, Peter and Grace, had 6 children. Three died as infants and one aged 10. The only other child who survived, George Edward (Teddy) Broadley, had a career as a cricketer. He was a fast bowler. He is mentioned in local papers and in 1899 Norden Cricket Club, Norden, Rochdale, engaged him as a professional. The club won their first championship in The Middletons and District League. In later life, George Edward ran a pub in Manchester.

I've been away again so I missed yesterday's people. I'll just mention that on June 5th, 1925, my great uncle Joseph Milne Raitt, married Nettie Wills in Aberdeen. They had one daughter, Pat. A couple of years ago, I made contact with her and had hoped that we would meet one day. Sadly, that didn't happen as she became ill with cancer and died last year. But I have met one of her sons and his family. It turns out that Pat and her husband lived for some time in a village very close to where I am now so her son was in the area, visiting the his birthplace. ( the same village from which my daughter ran her 10k last week).

Today, June 6th
1717, Dorothea Lonsdale, 1st cousin x 5, born in Spennithorne
1786, Lydia Favell, 5 x great aunt was baptised in Spennithorne
1821, Maria Grose, 1st cousin x 5, was born in Portsea.
1824, Margaret Smith, 2 x great grandmother, was baptised in Nairn, daughter of William Smith and Margaret Forsyth.

Although i have this event down as a birth, I suspect it is actually a baptism:
In 1667, my 7 x Great Grandmother Sarah Drake was born in Aylesbeare, Devon. She was the eldest daughter of George & Mary Drake. She married John Walrond and they had nine children.

In 1775, my 2nd Cousin 5 times removed Emma Trant Spry was baptised in West Lavington Wiltshire. She was the daughter of James Hume Spry & Emma Trant

In 1790, my 4 x Great Uncle Thomas Jenkins Whitney was baptised at Kington Herefordshire. He was the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Whitney

In 1811, my 4 x Great Aunt Ann Carter was christened at Aylesbeare Devon. She was the youngest child of Thomas Carter & Elizabeth Coplestone and married Frederick Walker

In 1860, Phoebe Smith, wife of my 4 x Great Uncle Samuel Levi was buried at Diss, Norfolk. She was 79 yrs old.

My Dad would have been 101 today. He died at 11.00am on 11th November so it's easy to remember his anniversary. He served his apprenticship as a Hairdresser therefore gaining the nickname "Sweeney" although he had another from his time in the army WW2, where he was in the artillery and also picked up "Gunner".

The family are not so sure it was from the army and always assumed it was from his passion of always putting of til tommorrow what could be done today...IE Gunna.

On this day in 1770, Nancy Bowker my 3 x great grandmother was baptised at St Michael's Ashton Under Lyne (She may have been born at Haughton)

She was daughter of George Bowker a cordwainer and Mary Shepley from Glossop

Nancy Married James Cock in 1789 at St Mary's Stockport - he was mostly decribed as a weaver

They had 11 children
James died in 1838 at Denton. He clearly wrote a will, there is a death duty record and an act book entry but the will is elusive

Nancy died in 1852 in Denton, they were both buried there at St Lawrence's

On 8th June 1751 my 5xG grandparents John Wardlaw and Barbara Smith gave up their names for proclamation to be married. They lived in the parish of Kirknewton and East Calder. John was a weaver at Leithead which now seems to be little more than a collection of farm buildings. Barbara was from Newlands, a few fields away and which still exists. Like many of the infuriating Kirknewton records of the time, mother's are rarely mentioned, even on baptisms. I know John's father was another John and grandfather very likely a George and Barbara's was Rodger Smith of whom I know nothing apart from he was my 6xG grandfather. I share a birthday with their youngest child, my 4xG grandfather.

John Lee my great great grandfather was buried today in Tintwistle, Cheshire in 1878, after dying in Hadfield, Derbyshire.
He was born in 1810 in Upper Bridge Upperthong (Homlfirth) to George Lee, a shoemaker and Ann Whitehead. He became a shoemaker himself though seemed to prefer the grander description of
Cordwainer.

In 1833 he married Mary Cook at Holmfirth. He and Mary had 6 daughters though the second died at 15.
In 1850 Mary died in childbirth, it is clear this child did not live either
In 1851 They are all at home in Upperthong.
By 1861 they all moved to Glossop, Derbyshire, apart from his oldest daughter who stayed behind to marry. In Derbyshire he has a new wife Ann, who I have not been able to track down. The 1861 census gives her occupation as sick in bed! Ann died not long after

All John's daughter married off, and he died at 68 as above

Does anyone mind if I do tomorrow's now. It's going to be a busy weekend and this could be the only chance I'll get.

Let's get the lesser ones out of the way first:

Baptised 1765, in Portsmouth, Joseph Lush, a 6 x great uncle.
Married 1815, in Strichen, Aberdeenshire, 4 x great grandparents, John Birnie and Barbara Birnie ( why is Barbara so hard to type?)

And now the big one. I know lots of you know this story but bear with me, it's too special not to tell again.

I went to bed on the night of June 8th with no plans or expectations for the following day. At approximately 1.45 am on 9th, we were woken by my daughter's partner, phoning to say that they were in Lancaster Royal Infirmary and that although not due until 18th September, their baby was about to be born. There was nothing the doctors could do to stop it happening. Fearing the worst, we got dressed and tore hell for leather down the motorway, arriving at about 2.30am. I was allowed to see my daughter, who was very distressed and obviously well advanced in labour. She hadn't even started going to ante-natal classes and had no idea about breathing control or anything else so I did what I could to help but to be honest, she was beyond taking it on board.

At about 3.15, we were sitting in a waiting area when there was a mad rush of doctors and nurses, plainly heading for an emergency. In my bewildered state, I thought it was for someone else. But how wrong could I be. At 3.33am my tiny, grandson was born, weighing 1lb 14ozs ( 850 grams), so unready for this world that his skin was not fully formed and his eyes were still sealed, like a new born kitten. My first sight of him was as he was wheeled in an incubator to the neo-natal intensive care unit and all I could see was his head, so very small - about the size of a mandarin orange.

There was no sleep for any of us that night and later that day, the baby, who didn't have a name at that time, and his parents were transferred to Burnley Neo-Natal Intensive Care Hospital where they spent the next two months, with every day bringing fresh challenges and concerns but with the very best of care and equipment. At around ten weeks, he was transferred back to Lancaster and on his one hundred day birthday, he came home - the day before he should have been born!

Actually, typing this has brought back the most devastating emotions and I can hardly see the keyboard now. But look, here we are, about to celebrate his first birthday with all the family around us. And just to do some real nana-boasting - here he is, still tiny and more like the eight and a half month old which he should be, than a baby of twelve months but healthy, happy and perfect.......

On this day in 1706 Mary Conington and John Arnesby married at St Peter's Oundle. They were 6 X great grand parents. She was daughter of John and Ann of Thorpe Achurch, and he was of Benefield. They had only one child that I know of. Mary died 1749 in Benefield, and John died there in 1762

and

On this day Jane Hall and James Leah, my great x 3 grandparents married at Mottram in Longdendale, Cheshire. Jane (aka Jenney} was daughter of Joseph Hall and Mary (aka Molly or Malley) of Rowarth Derbyshire. James was illegitimate son of Mary Leah of Hyde/Werneth area

Also not quite such a direct ancestor but both parties related to me and their decendants share a number of ancestors with me
Sally Pierce Dolby and George Boyce married today in 1840 at St James Westminster. She was first cousin 4 x removed, as was he (in a different but related branch)
I looked at them first when tracing Sarah Pierce Boyce - Sally was someone different though.

On 9th June 1893, my great grandmother, Margaretha Brück Pfisterer, died of Pneumonia.

She was attended by her brother-in-law, William Fletcher.

Her second husband, Robert Charles Wallis, left a year before, accompanied by their two sons and after Margaretha's death, her two daughters left to join their father and brothers.

Her younger brothers, who called themselves "Briggs" were already in the States and "Fred Briggs" as he now called himself, founded a popular Meat Market in Burlington, Des Moines, Iowa.

Her first born, Karl Friedrich Pfisterer, called himself Charles Frederick Fisher in the States and settled in Flint River, Burlington, Des Moines, Iowa. He arrived around 1884.

My grandfather, Margaretha's second born son travelled from Mexborough, Yorkshire, to join his cousins, the Heinzmanns, in Northwich, where he stayed and married Jessie Whitlow.

The first I know of him was his marriage to Elizabeth Johnson in 1711 at Winkfield, Berks
Both George and Elizabeth described as servant to Earl Ranelagh

They would be working at Cranbourne Lodge in Windsor Great Park, of which only Cranbourne Tower remains

They had three children , 1 died young.
Elizabeth died in 1751

I've quite a few today.

On 10 June
Elizabeth Eliza Mumby my 2 x g.g.aunt married Isaac Salter in Hobart, Tasmania in 1850.  They had both been transported from England.  Isaac Salter was transported for desertion. He was court martialled at Wellington Barracks on the 8th March 1836.  Isaac left England aboard the `Lady Nugent`` on the 12th. November 1836. He served 8 years as a convict in Tasmania. He received his Free Certificate on 28 January 1844 and permission to marry was granted on the 21 May 1850. Elizabeth received a sentence of 7 years and transportation to Van Diemen’s Land for two cases of theft of rather large quantities of food and clothes from two previous employers  She left aboard the ship Tory on 30 April 1848, which held 170 female convicts.  Although Elizabeth had one daughter born 1838, it’s possible that she had another child who was the subject of a Bastardy Order in 1847.  She travelled to Tasmania without any children, but had 10 more following her marriage to Isaac.

William Howard my husband’s 3 x g.g.uncle was born in Liverpool in 1798

Ann Elizabeth Whittaker my husband’s g.aunt was baptised at St Lawrence Church, Denton, Lancashire in 1886

Hannah Lockwood (nee Brown) my 4 x g.grandmother was baptised at St Nicholas Church, Cumberworth, Yorkshire in  1753

James Mumby my 2 x g.g.uncle was baptised at St Botolph’s Church, Boston, Lincolnshire in 1812

Ann Chorley my 3 x g.g.aunt was baptised at Gosforth, Cumberland in 1810

Ada Hobson Cockett my aunt died in Blackpool in 1993.  She was 97 and the cause of her death was Old Age.  She ran away with a married man and although they never married or had children they were together until his death in 1955.  She and her partner used Ada’s middle name as their surname.  Her life choice obviously didn’t go down well with her mother or siblings, but I stayed with them often as a child and was very fond of them both.  Not having children of their own they gave me the best of everything, and actually asked my mother if they could adopt me.  Naturally my mother said No. ::)

John Seth Cockett my uncle and baby brother of Ada Hobson Cockett above died at 20 Ash Street, Harpurhey, Manchester in 1910.  He was 3 weeks old and his cause of death was given as Congenital Debility and convulsions.

George William Wright my g.grandfather died at 395 Hessle Road, Hull in 1935.  His age was given as 77, giving a year of birth of either 1858 or 1857 if his birthday was later in the year than his date of death.  Of course, it’s possible that his son who was the informant didn’t know his true age.   As he and my g.grandmother didn’t marry, I have no way of knowing his age and possible name of father.  As I can’t find him on any census prior to 1891, I have no idea if the details given on 1891 and subsequent census that he was born in Bethnal Green, are correct.  Having a common name doesn’t help me as there are too many of a similar name and age in the Bethnal Green area at the time.

Fred Broadley was born 10 jun 1892 in Accrington. He became a roller coverer and suffered a dreadful industrial accident. I still haven't been able to find much about it and my main source of information is from the WWI pension records. Three of his brothers died in WWI (Their great-nephew stood on the Fourth Plinth to represent them) and, although Fred had only one eye, with damage to the other, he was drafted into a labour battalion. While he was away, his first and, I think, only child, died of pneumonia.

On 11th June 1893 my great great grandfather's elder brother William McKeown arrived in Quebec, though some sources say it was the day before. He had sailed from Liverpool on the SS Mongolian. The Mongolian was a Scottish built ship, launched in Glasgow three years previously and built for the Allan Line based in Liverpool. She was 4,838 tons, 400 ft long and with a berth of 45 ft. and was torpedoed by the submarine UC 70 off Filey Bay on 21st July 1918 with a loss of 35 lives.
Wlliam made his way to Pennsylvania and wasted no time in marrying a local girl, Mary Amanda Chapman, the daughter of George and Phoebe Chapman, almost as soon as he arrived. Their first child Anna was born the following year. Two of his children, John and Matilda would be named after his parents, my 3xG grandparents.
William settled in Knox Township, Clearfield, Pennsylvania and died in 1944. He is buried in the Messiah Baptist Cemetery in Kylertown, Pennsylvania.

His brother, Robert, my GG grandfather would follow him the year after and despite a bit of coming and going between the USA and Scotland, also emigrated  and died, also in the 1940's in Indiana.

June 11th 1667, Edward Jackson and Margrett Waller were married in Brough under Stainmore, Westmorland. My 8 x great grandparents and that is about the end of my discoveries so far on those two lines. I know that Margrett was the daughter of Robart ( sic) Waller and that she was born in February 1637 but that is absolutely all. Of Edward Jackson's family - I know nothing!

In 1813, my 3 x great grandparents, William Smith and Margaret Forsyth were married in Nairn. I know that Margaret's mother was called Jane but have no surname for her. William is one of my worst brickwalls! Many people have tried to help me with him and his family but nothing ever quite ties up the loose ends.

On 11 June 1893 Herbert Peppercorn, my 2nd cousin 1 x removed, was baptised at Islington St Mary.
He was the son of Augustus Peppercorn and Sarah White, who were artificial florists. Herbert and his siblings assisted in the business as they grew up.  It must have been successful as the family occupied two adjoining houses in Highgate (now I believe a French restaurant!).
Herbert died on 9 June 1966 in Dorset, leaving nearly £5000 in his will - about £72,000 today!

I do have a few ancestors' anniversaries today but I am going to reserve this post to just the one. The phone rang this afternoon - my sister telling me that my uncle died this morning at the age of seventy-eight. He was the second youngest of my mum's five siblings. All of the others died some time ago so this is the end of a generation in my family. Tonight I am feeling very sad.

Sorry to read of your sad news Jen.

Two birthdays today:

My 2xgt. uncle, John Viney, born in 1841 in Monkton Combe, Somsrset;  son of Henry and Eliza (nee Elliott). He was baptised the following month at Prior Park.  John, like many of his family, became a stone mason. He moved to London, as did his brother William (my 2xgt.grandfather). I can find him on a census with wife Eliza and 3 daughters but not yet found a marriage.  Eliza died and John married Annie Biggs in 1892. John died in 1910.

My grandmother,Mary Joanna Kingsman, born in 1901 in Kensington;  daughter of John and Annie (nee George).  Mary was the 4th child out of a family of 10 and during WW1 worked in a munitions factory.  She married John Frederick Bernard Howard in 1921; two children were born but their son died aged 7 months.  Mary worked as an office cleaner for most of her life and died in 1983 in Poole, Dorset.

I think it is more than likely that there is a connection. I shall have a look through my tree and see if I can work anything out but it's more likely that I'd have to make a trip down to the Westmorland archives which, although it is only a ten minute walk away, I rarely have chance to do! Maybe this is the excuse I need. :)

Seems a strange day, perhaps they did the deed during a tea break, but on Tuesday 13th June 1854 my great great grandparents, James Stein and Elizabeth Pate married in Linlithgow after proclamations on Sunday's the 4th and 11th. They were married by the Rev. Dr. Andrew Bell, who the next year was the Moderator for the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland for 1855.
Their names are still at this time written as Steen and Peat but by the time of their deaths years later in Stirling would have become Stein and Pate, the Pate name making it as far as my aunt Elizabeth (it was her middle name).
James was 25 and a shoemaker, the eldest child of James Steen, a tanner and Jane Downs. There were six sisters between him and his only brother, Henry.
Elizabeth was 4 days short of her 23rd birthday and was the daughter of John Peat, a shoemaker and Isabella Scott.
All of them, like many in Linlithgow lived on High Street. At the time James and Elizabeth were children the houses here were described as old and decayed yet substantial. Their daughter Elizabeth, my great grandmother would be born on the same street.

I still don't have a computer with FTM running, but will have a go from what I can find

Richard Bond,my 4 x great grandfather, died on this day in 1821
The Manchester Guardian of 30th June 1821 carried the following: -
On the 14th inst in consequence of a fall from his horse the preceding night, on his return home, Richard Bond, Esq. of Denton, hat-manufacturer. He was esteemed by all for his genuine honesty and benevolent heart; in his death society has to deplore the loss of a valuable member, and his family and friends will ever mourn the absence of an affectionate father and protector.

He was born in unknown place , sometime around 1758 , probably near Manchester to John Bond and Ellen Nee Swinlehurst originally of Tatham in the north of Lancs.
He was living at Denton in Lancs when he married Mary Lowe at Manchester Cathedral in 1782.
He had  a hat factory roughly where Bond Street is now in Denton. (Named after him?)
At one point also the hat business was Bond Peacock and Bromley at Crown Point (now a shopping centre)

He and Mary had 12 children, of whom 6 died very young and on at only 30.

Mary lived on until 1835.
Both RIchard andMary were buried at St Lawrence's Denton

On 12th June 1912, my great great aunt Caroline Emma Edward nee Holmes emigrated aboard the Royal George from Bristol, bound for Montreal. On arrival a week later she described herself as a widow. She settled in Winnipeg

She was born in 1858 in Birmingham
She married George William Edwards in Claines Worcestershire in 1876.
Emma and George had 5 children. George seemed to be away a lot and may have run off. His death is not clear

She clearly had a difficult decision when her daughter Emma and Her sons Edwin (who I met) and George William, all already married emigrated to Canada.
However she went and eventually died in 1937 in Winnipeg and was buried at Old Kildonan
Cemetery

I missed yesterday, which was the anniversary of my aunty Alice's death in 1993. She was the older half-sister of my uncle who died a couple of days ago.

Today:
1840 - my 3 x great grandparents, Joseph Milne and Jean Birnie were married in Rathen, Aberdeenshire. By the census of 1841, Jean was living with her parents-in-law, John and Christian Milne, with an eight month old baby (another Joseph) but she was listed as Jean Birnie, not Milne. This caused me some confusion, I can tell you! Although I have never been able to find the record, it would seem that her husband had died within months of their marriage and that she reverted to her maiden name. She re-married some years later. This is yet another of those occasions when I have wished that registration in Scotland had started at the same time as in England. I shall probably never know what happened to Joseph. ???

Hi gengen, I presume you've checked the Joseph Milne died Aberdeen 27 November 1841. I know it's 5 months after the census but SP say that it wasn't uncommon on the 1841 census for a married woman to be recorded under her maiden name.

Two great aunts with birthdays:

Annie Edith Kingsman, born in Kensington in 1899, daughter of John and Annie (nee George). Annie was baptised the following month at St. Clement, Notting Hill, which is where she married Charles Horace Hill in 1920.  A sister of Charles had married Annie's brother John at the same church 3 years earlier.  Charles and Annie had one son and Annie died in1979.

Lilian Ottley Pain, born in Plumstead in 1886;  daughter of James Ottley and Amelia Sophia (nee Rainer). Every census shows Lilian living with her grandmother, aunts and uncles. Lilian married late in life in 1943 in Dorset to a widower, Percy Henry Bath.   Percy died in 1953 and Lilian in 1973 in Somerset.

1947 - My cousin Eileen was born.

And, most importantly.....

Charles Dawson and Alice Crompton my husband’s 2 x g.grandparents married at St Mary the Virgin Church, Prestwich, Lancashire in 1842

John Broth(w)ell my 5 x g.g.uncle was baptised in Lincolnshire in 1735

Jane Middleton my 3 x g.g.aunt died at Seascale, Cumberland in 1889 aged 71, she had never married or had any children.  It was a large grave as also in the grave were her parents, 4 more of their daughters (3 who died in childhood and one who died aged 71, the same as Jane) plus another married daughter and her husband. Jane was the last of the ones to be buried in this grave, only a month after her brother in law.

Dameron Mann (nee Collett) was buried at Westerfield, Suffolk in 1627 aged 46.  Just a month before she was married her father died, and when his Will was proved in June 1600, Dameron Collett was one of only three of her father's eight children to benefit from his estate.  Even at the age of just less than twenty years, and despite having one older brother, Anthony, alive at that time, it was Dameron who was made the executor of her father's Will, which was very odd given the era.

Anne (Anna) Collett (nee Wood formerly Tharlow) the 1st wife of my 3 x g.grandfather was buried at Fressingfield, Suffolk in 1786 less than 2 years after their marriage.  The 2nd wife of my 3 x g.grandfather was my 3 x g.grandmother.

In 1849 my 3 x Great Grandfather James Whitney died at Bedminster, Bristol aged 58. Although he was described as "Gentleman" on death, his earlier life forms one of my biggest brick walls! I am fairly sure that he is the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Whitney, pauper, of Almely Herefordshire. I think he married Avis Wilson in London in 1814 and had a short-lived daughter Maria in Rickmansworth Hertfordshire in 1815. But when & where Avis died and when & where he remarried to Eliza (maiden name unknown) is still a mystery. James & Eliza had one son, Edwyn.

In 1885, my 3x Great Uncle Thomas Watson of Heyford Wharf, Northants died. He was the eldest son of Joseph & Ann Watson of the Globe Hotel Weedon Bec. He was married to Elizabeth Stockley Goodman and had two sons.

Hi nanny jan, I've just read up on that sinking. More lives lost than the Titanic and Lusitania put together, yet nowhere near as well known. Probably due to government cover up at the time I suppose.

Two baptisms today.

On 17th June 1798 William Ross was baptized in Colinton. He had been born on the 1st June in Craiglockhart, where all his siblings were born. William was the youngest child of my 5xG grandparents Peter Ross and Agnes Mason. His sister Susanna was my 4xG grandmother.

On 17th June 1832 my great great grandmother Elizabeth Peat (Pate) was baptized in Linlithgow, having been born on the 14th. She was the youngest daughter of my 3xG grandparents John Peat and Isabella Scott.

On 18th June 1892 my grandmother, Beatrice beryl Booth was born in Horsham, Victoria, where her father was a probation officer. She was the youngest of 7 children.

She grew up with out her father who died when she was just three - some say of shame because he'd lost all in the great bank crash of that time - He was a governor of the bank at a time when governors were responsible for the bank's debts- (so I've been told)   He lost his engineering business (designing and making harrows)

She was a good cook and jam, pickles and chutney maker and I'd like to think I am keeping up the tradition.

On 18th June 1866, my 3xG grandfather James Steen married for the second time in Linlithgow. James was still a tanner at the time and his bride Margaret White is described as a spinster. Whether this was true, I don't know, she was certainly liberal with her age. It doesn't appear to have been a happy match as by the next census they are living apart. Strangely, his youngest son Henry appears as a witness, when I don't think he was happy with the marriage. He took himself off and joined the army, serving for 20 years and dying on the Isle of Wight.
This was to me however a very fortuitous marriage as the certificate is the only document that tells me who his parents were, Janet Auld and another James Steen, a miller.

Elizabeth Postlethwaite (nee Postlethwaite) my 5 x g.grandmother and grandmother of Agnes and Thomas above, was baptised at St Mary’s Parish Church, Dalton in Furness, Lancashire in 1732.  Elizabeth married a man with the same surname as her maiden name, but I’ve not been able to find any other connection between them despite their parents only living just over a mile from each other.  Maybe that’s something I’ll have to spend some time researching in the future.

Mary Ann Leighton (Nee Mumby) my 2 x g.g.aunt was baptised at St Botolph’s Church, Boston,  Lincolnshire in 1810

Jane Bell  my 4 x g.g.aunt was baptised at Baston, Market Deeping, Lincolnshire in 1758

Thomas Hobson my 5 x g.grandfather married Sarah Walker a widow at St Peter’s Church, Huddersfield, Yorkshire in 1757.  He married my 5 x g.grandmother in 1729 and they had 12 children, the last in 1751.  I can’t find a death/burial for my 5 x g.grandmother, so whether she just left the family or actually died prior to the above marriage I have no idea.  In 1757, my 5 x g.grandparents still had 6 children under 16, the youngest who was my 4 x g.grandfather being aged 6.  Surely their mother wouldn’t just have walked out on them, although I suppose it’s possible she left taking the children with her.

Alice Hobson (nee Pemberton) my g.grandmother was born in Kingsley, Cheshire in 1843

Herbert Pemberton my 2nd cousin once removed was born in Warrington, Cheshire in 1910

Elizabeth Hartley (nee Baxter) my 5 x g.g.aunt was baptised at St Andrew’s Church, Heckington, Lincolnshire in 1747

George Hardy my husband’s 2 x g.g.uncle was baptised at St Lawrence Church, Denton, Lancashire in 1831

John George Mumby my g.g.uncle died at 79 English Street, Myton, Hull, Yorkshire in 1890.  The cause of death was Phthisis Pulmonalis for 7 months.

On this day in 1813 Matthew Wyman died in Oundle
For some time he was a mystery to me. He married Susannah Arnsby in 1762 in Oundle. He was of  Harringworth and the family seemed good but no baptism. I then discovered that Robert Wyman of Harringworth married Anne Brown of Thorpe Achurch in Thorpe Achurch and had all but their last child at Thorpe Achurch, then obviously moved to Harringworth.
Matthew and Susannah had 4 children. Matthew was a wheelwright and in the Oundle militia, and a tenant of Miss Johnson.
Susannah lived on until 1824

Also on this day in 1858 my Great Grandmother Clara Maria Clarke was baptised in Oundle
She was daughter of Staffurth Clarke, a watchmaker and Sophia Wyman.
She married Frederick Douglas, a baker of Egham and son of a watchmaker,in St Mary's Lambeth.
They had 7 children at the bakery in Egham. Frederick died early in 1901, so Clara ran the bakery with her children until her death in 1933

Samuel Pemberton my 3 x g.grandfather was buried at St Oswald’s Church,  Lower Peover, Cheshire in 1829.  Interestingly some trees on Ancestry have him re-marrying in 1834 - clever huh ::)  FindMyPast have the man who married in 1834 as aged 30, my 3 x g.grandfather was 43 when he died, his wife had died in 1820 aged only 31 leaving 3 children aged 11, 8 and 4.

Hello everyone,

I have nothing to report for the next few days but I do have a request.

Please can somebody take on the task of creating a new thread for On This Day In July? I shall be away from home and can't guarantee internet access at the end of June so would be very grateful if someone could create the thread and put the link on to the end of this one. I have asked one or two regular contributors but luck would have it that we have all chosen the same time to be on holiday! :)

Many thanks

Jen

John Bradley married Mary Sharples 21 jun 1823 at Church Kirk, Lancs. He belonged to the branch of Broadleys descended from Jonas Broadley (1698-1770) who changed their names to Bradley but John seems to have had more trouble than most in doing so. On the 1841 census he appears as Broadley and when he was buried his name was written as Broadley, with the o then crossed out. He was a calico printer, as so many were at that time. Several of his children died young and I have so far found only one daughter having children.

Jonathan secured the lease of Ashton Old Hall and the school was based there.
After Jonathans death Grace married a third time to Thomas Kirkbride who was probably also a priest

On 21st June 1941 my great great grandfather Robert McEwan died in Bicknell, Indiana, where he was buried 3 days later beside his second wife. He was born Robert McKeown on 10th August 1865 in Coalisland, County Tyrone. Some census records in Scotland and the USA have his birth as Scotland but his obituary proved what I had long suspected was his birth.
I'm not sure how I feel about Robert, he cleared off leaving my GG grandmother Hannah with 4 children and one on the way. Then again I am fairly sure that this 5th child wasn't Robert's, so I really have no idea who was to blame for the marriage break up. I tend to come down on Hannah's side as she reared the children. I do know that on his second marriage certificate, he falsely declared himself a widower.
Below is a piece about him from an American newspaper. Some bits are misleading or plain wrong. For instance it mentions the 'English engaged (as in battle), just them was it  ???. Also the reatreat from Mona should read Mons and the Mrs. McEwan mentioned was not the mother of either of the boys mentioned, their mother was my GG gran Hannah, who having reared them and watched them march off I would think, had far more reason to grieve.

On 22nd June 1883 my grandfather John Thomas Richardson was born in Hartlepool, his parents were William John Richardson and Theresa Hetherington.

He married Henrietta Briggs on 1st January 1914 @ Stockton on Tees and died of pneumonia aged just 31 years on 15th January 1915 the day after his only child (my mother) was born. Sadly  Henrietta died 3 days later also of pneumonia aged just 27 years so my mother was an orphan.

Trying to find out about my grandparents got me interested in family history and has given me a lot of pleasure (and a little frustration) over the recent years. So thanks granddad and happy birthday.

On 23rd June 1795 my 3xG grandmother Hannah Hainsworth was born in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Her family were living at Hunslet Moor which at that time I presume actually was a moor and not a district. She was baptized at St. Peter's a few days later. The name Hannah has passed down through the generations as far as my niece today.

On 23rd June 1844 my 4xG grandmother Agnes Wallace died at 59 Broughton Street, Edinburgh. She had been living there with her son Alexander and family following the death of her husband Peter the year before. At the time of his death, they had been married for 52 years, their son George was my 3xG grandfather. The name Agnes, perhaps the most common female name in my ancestry has passed down as far as my cousin, where it has apparently hit the buffers.

On this day in 1683, Amey Austen and John Palmer married in Oundle Northants
They definitely had one child John Palmer. John died in 1720 or 1730< I believe the latter, if so he was a gent.

William Brand my 2 x g.grandfather was baptised at St Denys, New Sleaford, Lincolnshire in 1825

Elizabeth Martha Brand my g.g.aunt (and daughter of William Brand above) died at 43 Broadwell, Christchurch, South Southwark, Surrey in 1852.  She was 18 months old and the cause of her death was pneumonia 3 weeks/diarrhoea 10 days.

Sir Robert de Felton my 18th g.grandfather, who was created a Lord in 1312, died at The Battle of Bannockburn, Stirlingshire in 1314

John Postlethwaite my 4 x g.g.uncle was buried at The Church of St Mary and St Michael, Great Urswick, Lancashire in 1864

Bridget Goad (nee Postlethwaite) my 5 x g.g.aunt (and aunt of John Postlethwaite above) was buried at St Cuthbert’s Church, Aldingham, Lancashire in 1803

Jane Chapman my 5 x g.g.aunt was buried at St Mary’s Church, Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire in 1734.  I can’t find a birth/baptism for her but as her parents didn’t marry until 1722 and my 5 x g.grandfather was their first child born in February 1722/23, presumably she was younger than him, so at most she would have been about 11 when she died.

In 1859 my 2nd cousin 2 x removed, Alice B. Conquest, was born in Genesee County, Michigan.  She was the daughter of James and Mary Conquest.  When I first found this American connection, several trees and other sources had James AND Mary as children of Josiah Conquest.  I didn't believe this, despite the fact that James had apparently been brought up by Josiah and his wife.  When I sent for the marriage certificate (they married on 21 June 1852 at St George Hanover Square, London - one I missed on Friday!) it showed that James' father was Josiah's brother Thomas, so James and Mary were in fact cousins.  I'm so glad I sorted that out!

In 1935 my aunt Doris Giovannelli Wilson died giving birth to her second son Christopher in Southampton.  Unfortunately my father lost contact with Doris' widower, and it wasn't until I started researching that I was able to find them.  Sadly, it was too late, because both Christopher and his older brother Ian had died by then.  I have at least learned about Ian's family, through his widow, who bravely replied to the letter I sent addressed to Ian.

Elizabeth Lockwood (nee Hinchliff) my 3 x g.grandmother was  baptised at All Hallows Church, Kirkburton, Yorkshire in 1786

John Dawson my husband’s 3 x g.grandfather died at Old Hall, Pilkington Lancashire in 1868.  The cause of his death was given as Senectus which is just old age.  He was 77 at the time.

John Lockwood my 3 x g.grandfather [and husband of Elizabeth Lockwood (nee Hinchliff) above] was buried at St Nicholas Church, Cumberworth, Yorkshire in 1837.  He was publican at Joiners' Arms, Denby Dale.

And last but not least my granddaughter Molly Jane was born in 2008.  She had a party for her friends on Saturday, but we and other adult relations are going over later today for birthday cake.

James Broadley was born 25 jun 1826 at Ringstonehalgh, Clayton le Moors. He and his brothers were intended to be block printers, like their father, William, but the parlous state of the cotton industry meant that most of them either changed their job or travelled a long way to seek work. James and his brother William couldn't complete their apprenticeships because Farnsworth and Farnsworth, who employed them, went bust in 1853. James had married in 1846 and he and his wife moved to Edgeworth to find work. Some of their children died young. It appears that James and Alice split up. Alice went to Fall River, Massachusetts with two of her surviving children on 27 jun 1870 (thanks to Rootschatters for that information) but returned before 1881. Son William had brought back an American wife but they seem to have had an on off relationship, too. James ended his days lodging with two ladies called Hargreaves in Clayton le Moors.

On 25th June 1826 my 2nd great grand aunt Mary Smith was baptized in St. Peter's, Leeds. Unlike my Scottish and Irish Smiths, I have made some progress with the Yorkshire bunch. Mainly due to the fact that they tended to stay in the same area, use the same church and names and keep a family occupation going through the generations.

On 25th June 1941 my great great grandfather Robert McEwan was buried in Bicknell, Indiana, beside his second wife. Here he is, 5th from the left by his bass drum.

Arthur Whittaker my father in law and husband of Minnie above died in 1963.  His was aged 57 and his cause of death was congestive heart failure and coronary thrombosis.  Mind you he didn’t live the healthiest of lives, smoking at least 60 cigarettes a day and drinking 8 (yes eight) bottles of Guinness each evening.

Sarah Postlethwaite my 3 x g.g.aunt married Thomas Pickthall at St Mary’s Church, Dalton in Furness, Lancashire in 1819.

On 26th June 1865 my great grandmother Elizabeth Stein was born in High Street, Linlithgow. She was the youngest daughter of James Stein, a shoemaker and Elizabeth Pate, a shoemaker's daughter. Elizabeth played a big part in my early interest in genealogy. There are two things I would like to ask Elizabeth.

1. Who is my grandfather's father.
2. Where on earth are you buried, because nobody seems to know.

On 26th June 1852 Christina Tweedie, my 1st cousin 4 x removed left these shores for ever. Having travelled from Scotland to Liverpool with her husband, George Rae, an agricultural labourer from Linlithgow, and their children Mary 4, Thomas 2 and David 6 months, they boarded the Medina and began their journey to Australia. The Medina was the 16th ship to leave England for Australia that year and carried 410 government emigrants bound for South Australia. Conditions on board must have been bad as twelve children under the age of two died in the space of five days and five on one single day. The cause seems to have been dysentry. George and Christina's youngest child David was one of these casualties and like the other children was buried at sea. The journey took 105 days and the ship arrived in Port Adelaide on 9th October. Christina died in Redhill, South Australia in 1902.

George Hobson my 1st cousin 3 times removed married  Sarah Armitage at West Clayton, Yorkshire in  1863

John Chapman and Frances Bell my 5 x g grandparents married at St Mary’s Church, Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire in 1759.  It was her 2nd marriage, she had one child with her first husband who died a couple of years after they married.  They had one child.  John Chapman was 37 at the time of the marriage but it was his first marriage.  Despite that they went on to have another 8 children, the last one born a few months before her father died.

Charles Lees and Mary Sale my husband’s 3 x g.grandparents married at Manchester Cathedral in 1822

Philip Martin Benson my lovely brother was born in Bowdon, Cheshire in 1953.  Unfortunately he died, aged 38, from a malignant astrocytoma (a brain tumour).

Agnes Benson my 2 x g.g.aunt was baptised at St Mary’s Parish Church, Dalton in Furness, Lancashire in 1817

Ann Elizabeth Benson (nee Jolly) the wife of my 2 x g.g.uncle died at 53 Marsh Road, Linthorpe, Middlesborough in 1885.  She had left her husband, Joseph, and two sons and moved to Middlesborough where she had set up home with another man.  She took her daughter with her.  Her death certificate shows that the man, who she was living with, a Walter Clarke, registered her death under his name and stated he was a widower.  However on 12 August 1885, a Statutory Declaration was made by Walter Clarke and Agnes Emma Benson (Ann and Joseph's daughter) stating that her correct name was Annie Elizabeth Benson and that her widowed husband was Joseph Benson.

Robert Middleton my 3 x g.g.uncle died at Millom, Cumberland in 1878

John Stanton my 3 x g.grandfather was buried at St Mary’s Church, Newton in Mottram, Hyde, Cheshire in 1841

Sarah Chorley my 2 x g.g.aunt was buried at Egremont, Cumberland in 1833.  She was 5 years old and one of the illegitimate children my 3 x g.grandmother had before she married my 3 x g.grandfather.  I do know who her father was, as he was named in a bastardy bond.  My 3 x g.grandmother got around a bit as her 3 illegitimate children were by 3 different fathers. ::)

I'll be away for a couple or so weeks, so no more from me until I get back.  If I miss any interesting ancestors then I'll post their details later.
