Thank you both. The abbreviation, I later learned, was "parish."  I also agree that it's always better to view the original! :)

Would "yr" have any effect on identifying/confirming which John D. is being recorded?
If it is indeed yr, then yes, it would imply that John's father is still living, but not necessarily that his father was also named John.

However I don't think it is yr. Look at the very last abbreviation after 'this'. If that is 'Pr' for 'Parish', it is identical to the abbreviation after 'Middelbie'.

"John Dixon of Middlebie & Elizabeth Thomson in this parish Jan 26th"
"John Dixon Pr of Middelbie & Elizabeth Thomson in this Pr Janry 26"

I disagree 100%. This is a classic case of why it is always better to see the original. :)

Monica:

I was aware they turned up in Glasgow for some time, but haven't determined why. I do know they returned, though, or possibly maintained two residences. The family were gardeners/nurserymen at Netherby, I believe they may have operated the Cross Keys Inn in Canonbie for some time, and/or operated a courier/coach business.

Still trying to narrow down and scour new resources, but I believe DNA deductions on Ancestry also point to descent from James Dixon and Jean Telfer.

Thanks again for all your great work!
Brent

A concern I have about one of the potential sets of parents for John you mention, James and Jean (Telfer), is that they look to have left Dumfriesshire for Glasgow at the end of the 1700s. Did they come back in time for John to marry in the Dumfriesshire in 1816  :-\

What were the names of Elizabeth Thomson's parents?

Monica

Monica:

Parents for Elizabeth were James and Isabel Carruthers.  I'm sorry if your posts were updated or I read too quickly.  We DON'T know for sure that Little is incorrect, but a search of births in the area within the time frame don't leave m/any options.  In addition, the possible dates of birth of John vary from 1841,51,61 censuses to his death and the informer son wasn't present, leading us to believe it could've been an error transferring info. With the christenings I've seen for Middlebie and Canonbie, none include sponsors, witnesses, etc.

There were Moffats living on each side of the Dixons at Blackcroft, but I haven't made the connection with that Janet.

We definitely lean to James and Jean Telfer as the likely candidates for parents because of the first son's name of James.  Their other children were: Ann (1817), John (1820), William (1822), Robert (1825), Thomas (1826), and Margaret (1828).  Identifying the birth year would be so helpful.  During this time period, I assumed first marriages would typically occur between ages 16 and 25.  We are working with a couple theories.... one being that he was married first, closer to 18, and divorced or she died during childbirth.  It's also possible (based on some vague records) that he served in the military and married after returning from the War of 1812.

Alright super sleuths: I'm trying to identify the parents of John Dixon, born between 1784 and 1790 (corresponding censuses and death record don't match). He married Elizabeth "Betty" Thomson 26 Jan 1816 (maybe a 2nd marriage?).

We believe John's death record incorrectly noted his mother's maiden name as "Little," when his grandmother's maiden name was Little. As a result, and based on dates, location and DNA, I believe we've narrowed down the search of John's parents to one of three brothers:

Simon Dixon who married 1st Elizabeth Richardson and 2nd Mary Tinning;
John Dixon and Jannett Hill;
James Dixon and Jean Telfer.

I've attached John's details, as well as the trees of the brothers who I believe are candidates to be John's father. Any help ruling out or in possibilities, other suggestions for research, or other tips are appreciated!
