Hi Skirl,

Here's a link that may be useful for all counties not just Donegal.

https://www.townlands.ie/donegal/

It breaks each county down by townland, DED, parish etc.

Offaly (Kings) / Re: Jordans of Kilbride / Clara around 1811

Hi Bclc71,

if you check out irishgenealogy.ie (the official government website) and search for Jordan's in the Tullamore Electoral Division you will see a list of names etc.  Some refer to Clara Jordan's. Some resided in Erry, Maryborough and Kilmanaghan as well as Kilbride which are all in the same area.

There is a John Jordan married to Eliza Fitzpatrick, River Street, Clara
Alicia Jordan  D. 16.01.1948 Clara (born approx. 1866)

Henry Jordan B. 1858 - 1878 son of John Jordan (Erry Maryborough)

In addition if you look up the Griffith Evaluation you can see Alicia Jordan is residing in Clara at the time.

I'm from the area so may be able to provide some local knowledge.

Donegal / Catholic Conversion Rolls - Where is Mirmount??
« on: Sunday 09 April 17 17:31 BST (UK)  »
I'm researching the Tinney /Tiney / Tinny family in Donegal and came across a Hugh Tinney of Mirmount who is recorded in the Catholic Conversion Rolls for 9 June 1783.

An Edward Tinney of Legland (Dongeal) is also listed for 1781.

Does anyone know where Mirmount is or to what it refers to??

There was always family lore that the original Tinney family were Protestant but converted to Catholicism at some stage and this appears to support that contention.

Any information would be greatly appreciated - thanks in advance.

Scatty, it just so  happens that the Tullamore Tribune (local paper) published (5/5/16 edition) an article  by Michael Byrne of Offaly Historical Society (which is located not far from the original tae lane) the history of the area and plots its story from the 1790's. It included some early maps and photo graphs. If you want a copy of the paper I'don't be happy to post it on to you if you PM your address. I'll  see if I can send on a photo of the pictures contained in the article.

Hope this helps.

Andrew,

There is are several Dalton families still in the area and several Phelan's and O'Hara's too.  I've checked the Irish National Archives to see if there were any census records for Offaly (King's County) for that time but no records are available at present.

It is possible that your John/Thomas Dalton's may be the uncles of Thomas Dalton b.1831.

I can check and see what records are available from the local RC Church, however, I'm not sure how far back their records go.  Also, there is an old cemetary in Kilbride (beside Aughamore) that might be worthwhile checking.

Tara

Hi I'm from Clara and know the Phelan family they are still residing in Aghamore / Kilbride.  Here's a link to the 1911 Census which shows Thomas Dalton his daughter Margaret Phelan and Granddaughter Mary Margaret.

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/King_s_Co_/Clara/Aghamore/

It was only a few months ago that I was talking to one of Thomas' decendants, Noel Phelan and his wife on the train to Dublin. (small world)

There are also several Dalton family members in the area too.

In relation to old photos, there are several local books printed over the years which have photos of Clara, its sporting clubs (GAA in particular) which may have photos of interest to you.  In particular there are two books published in recent years based upon the photos of Tommy Harris who captured thousands of photos of Clara, its people and events etc.  Well worth a look.

If you want further information, please let me know.

Hi,

I am from Clara town which is about 5 miles from Tubber, in Co. Offaly.  I think the "Gargan" you are referring to could be Grogan which is located in Ballycumber about 6 miles from Tubber.  I've added a link which will help identify it on a map for you - http://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?county=OF&name=&town=&townland=0741&type=quick&page=1

Beechmount House

(http://webgis.buildingsofireland.ie/niahviewer/index.html?REG_NO=14802013) is located on the Kilbeggan Rd., approx. 1 mile from Clara town and was built by the Goodbody family in the late 1880's. It is located in the Barony of Kilcoursey.  THe local council built several housing estates in the area in the 70's/80's and one of these is called Beechmount Ave.

The other Beechmount mentioned in Mucklagh is also a local council estate.

If there is anything else you need to clarify please let me know.

Regards,

Teemac
