Ayrshire / Re: Robert Speir of Dalry, Ayrshire

Hi, I don't know about your Speir but I have folks with the last name Speirs (interchangable to Speir) in Ayrshire. I have looked at my tree and it seems that for a while they were in Tarbolton, and prior to that Ochiltree.

There is a story in my family that the surname came from some sort of French nobility who escaped France  and ended up in Britain, slowly travelling up to Scotland. He took the surname Speirs from the first person he met after getting to Britain.

Closing this now as I've just come across what I was looking for. Groom's surname was only half transcribed. No clue how I missed this after years of looking! Thanks all for the help.

eilthireach - that might well be possible. Thanks for this useful info!

oldfashionedgirl - it's still possible to view the index for marriages less than 75 years ago - that's what I'm working off. I had also visited the registry office in Kilmarnock, they have a "mini" Scotlandspeople centre there and I could not find any marriage certificate. I did look at their children's birth certificates though and that's where I'm getting this date from.

I did just mention 1959, I was hesitant to give out the full date for privacy reasons but I suppose I will. If I remember correctly, December 11, 1959.

Their children's birth certificate is where I'm getting 1959 from.

Carolw - yes, I have. That's what was discussed before.

After making this post I decided best check that, and I couldn't find anything. I would say it's possible they married further abroad, and that might be the only viable explanation but I heavily doubt this.

Hi all, having trouble finding a marriage record.
The people in question are living so I wont state any names but they were married in 1959. I have checked surrounding years within a 10 year radius, checked all sorts of name variants and I feel like I have exhausted every option apart from asking them "Are you married?" which is a bit of an awkward question.

Any reasons why it might not be on SP?

Just like to let all know that I did finally get it a few weeks ago, as they became available on Ancestry.  :)
