Hi Judith,
I am not really saying you are wrong as I like yourself need to have absolute proof before entering details in my own tree.
The record that I saw was at the following link:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,442233.0.html

if you go to this page and then scroll down to the
Births 1864-1881
Marriages 1845-1870
Deaths 1864-1870

click on the Marriages link and you will be taken to another site where there is a search facility. Just type in Sarah McKnight select "Marriage" box and 1858 (no need for place) and you should be taken to marriages for Sarah McKnight where you will see the entry for her marriage to James Patterson on the correct date 9 Nov 1858 with fathers given as Robert McKnight and James Patterson. As this from the Mormon records it may well be that it was wrongly transcribed but I hate discrepencies.
You have too much evidence in your several records for me to take this as true over yours but it did cast that shadow of doubt that I do so hate.

I just wish we could find a birth record for Benjamin to seal it once and for all.

All the best
Richard

Hi Judith,
Thanks very much for clarifying that but in fact it has only made things worse (not your fault) you see when James Paterson b1834 married Sarah McKnight b1836, Sarah's father was Robert McKnight as you said and he was married to Sarah Dean but James's father was James Paterson and not Benjamin according to the marriage record.

There must be two families getting mixed up somewhere but I cannot quite see where. There is certainly a big 6 year gap from the marriage of James and Sarah 1858 until the birth of Jane in 1864 so it is possible that there was at least one other child born before Sarah but as there is no record of a birth for Benjamin I am beginning to wonder if he took on an identity to hide from something and used James and Sarah as his parents in order to get whatever it was he wanted. Just a theory but he already cast the shadows of doubt by switching from Paterson to Fitzpatrick as and when it suited him so he was capable of giving himself another identity.

Would love to get to the bottom of this just for curiosity sake now  :)

You also say that James remarried on 20th December, 1893 in Abbotsford Place, Gorbals, Glasgow. Do you by any chance know to whom he was married on this occasion?

Hi Judith,
The following part from your post has me confused:
"Sarah died on 31st December 1891 of cerebral haemorrhage at 119 Main Street, Gorbals, Glasgow.  Benjamin remarried on 20th December, 1893 in Abbotsford Place, Gorbals, Glasgow according to the rites of the Church of Scotland.  He died on 10th January 1909 of cerebral haemorrhage at 483 Aickenhead Road, Glasgow.

Benjamin's parents were Benjamin Paterson and Jeannie Brown and Sarah McKnight's parents were Robert McKnight and Sarah Dean."

If Benjamin is the son of James Paterson and Sarah McKnight then why are his parents called Benjamin Paterson and Jeannie Brown ??

...and from your first post: Benjamin Paterson sometimes known as Benjamin Fitzpatrick was buried in Port Glasgow Cemetery on 7 Dec 1915.    If he died in 1909 why did it take so long to bury him??

Could you please clarify for me as my age is a big disadvantage and clouding my interpretation.

Did you in fact mean that James died in 1909.... Benjamin was buried in 1915...and it was James that remarried in 1893 and not Benjamin ?
All the best
Richard

Hi Bookworm,
What makes you so sure that your Benjamin PATERSON is the son of James Paterson and Sarah MCKNIGHT? Not being cheeky, just never heard of him.

I certainly have James PATERSON b1834 Ireland and married to Sarah MCKNIGHT b1836 Ireland. They had 6 children Jane 1863, George 1866, Margaret 1868, Alexander 1870, Harriet 1871 (all Ireland)and James 1877 (Lanark, Scotland). There is no record of a Benjamin in this family that I can find.
James died sometime after 1891 and his wife Sarah died 31 Dec 1891 in Gorbals, Glasgow. Their son James b1877 married and went on to roam the country having children born in Broughty Ferry and even as far north as Golspie, Sutherland.
Do you have evidence please of Benjamin being a son of James and Sarah so that I can amend my records.

Look forward to hearing from you.
All the best
Richard
