How sad to see that I started this thread back on July 1st 2005 when the 1841 & 1851 Censuses were not easily available!

And despite very many good people making suggestions and contributing data - I have stll not found anything more on my incredible elusive g-g-grandfather GEORGE HARE - other than:

Died 13 May 1873 ar 316 Strand, London  aged 53 - [Death Cert]
DOB therefore calculated @ c.1820
Occupation Hotelkeeper - [ various trade directories]
Residence in 1869: 34 Essex Street, Strand, London [Post Office Directory]
Sons: WILLIAM DANIEL PAUL HARE DOB ???? [definitely before 1854]  and EDWARD HARE  DOB ?? [maybe c. 1849]

That's it.

And during this time, I have successfully done nearly 70 Family History research projects for other people!

So - if you can bear to re-read this thread - it is still very much a live question.

Best wishes

Peter George

Census and Resource Discussion / Vessels - 1851 Census
« on: Friday 27 January 12 10:36 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know if the 1851 Census covered those at sea?  or did they just not bother?  If Vessels are covered, does anyone know how I can access them with or without a surname?

In susbsequent censuses, the County of the ship's homeport was used, then 'Vessels' as the Parish, then the ship's name as District;  this doesn't seem to have happened in the 1851 records.

Any help/advice/comments much appreciated.

Many thanks

Peter

Hi Tony

Thank you so much for carrying out your promise and doing this work for me.  I am extremely grateful, and you are a leadingexample of the 'community' which serious researchers create.

I am not surprised at the result ... and indeed, as we know, quite often 'proving a negative' is just as useful as the positive.

Again, very many thanks.  And happy New Year.

That would be terrific ... very many thanks.

Re 'Portland' - there is also a Portman Terrace, and, I think, an Avenue - but the whole area containing these streets was known in the 1891 & 1901 Censuses as 'Portman Town'.

Anyway, here's hoping.

And a very happy Christmas to you.

Cheers

no - they are not there - or any earlier census;  I only have anecdotal evidence that they lived in this area 1920/21.

Is there any chance that someone has any residential directory for 1921 covering Marylebone, London?

If so - any entry containing surname LEIGHTON living in any street with PORTLAND in its name (e.g. Portland Terrace / Street/ Great Portland Street, etc)?

Undying gratitude will be forthcoming.

Happy Christmas

Peter
