Look Up request LEIGHTON
« on: Friday 23 December 11 17:05 GMT (UK) »
Is there any chance that someone has any residential directory for 1921 covering Marylebone, London?

If so - any entry containing surname LEIGHTON living in any street with PORTLAND in its name (e.g. Portland Terrace / Street/ Great Portland Street, etc)?

Undying gratitude will be forthcoming.

Happy Christmas

Have you found them on the 1911 census?

no - they are not there - or any earlier census;  I only have anecdotal evidence that they lived in this area 1920/21.

hi peter,

kelly's post office directory's are the best source.

i shall have a look next time i visit the london archives.

to  the best of my knowledge there are only two portlands in that area, great portland street and portland place (the latter being very exclusive, housing amongst others, embassies, hotels, riba and the bbc).

i'll have a peep next week unless someone else beats me to the draw.

That would be terrific ... very many thanks.

Re 'Portland' - there is also a Portman Terrace, and, I think, an Avenue - but the whole area containing these streets was known in the 1891 & 1901 Censuses as 'Portman Town'.

Anyway, here's hoping.

And a very happy Christmas to you.

Cheers

hello peter

in the directories from 1920 to 1922 the following portland's are listed:
portland place, portland court, portland mews, little portland street and great portland street.

gt portland and little portland were (and still are) mainly commercial premises.

the others are residential with portland place also being home to many embassies and the BBC as well as other notable institutions.

over the three year period there is no mention of Leighton's residing in the area, the closest being in new bond street which, although being in the west 1 area is a fair stretch from the portlands.

sorry to disappoint you.

all the best for the new year

Hi Tony

Thank you so much for carrying out your promise and doing this work for me.  I am extremely grateful, and you are a leadingexample of the 'community' which serious researchers create.

I am not surprised at the result ... and indeed, as we know, quite often 'proving a negative' is just as useful as the positive.

Again, very many thanks.  And happy New Year.
