Surrey Completed Look up Requests / James Divall and Emily - mariage
« on: Wednesday 09 January 08 19:38 GMT (UK)  »
Help please. I am trying to find the marriage of James Divall and Emily - and her maiden name if possible. In the 1841 census they are living in Nutfield, Surrey and have a daughter, Ellen,  who is three, so I suppose they were married in or before 1837/8.  James was born in abt 1816 in Horsham and Emily in abt 1818/21 in Shipley, Sussex.

I have them in all the censuses from 1841 onwards, so would be very grateful for help finding out about either of them before this date - eg their respective parents.

Many thanks for any help :)

Help please - I am trying to find Michael Peryer in the 1901 census.  I have tried all sorts of variations to his name and no luck so far! In 1891 he was living in the Friends Meeting House in Hammersmith, working as a General Labourer (he was a Quaker). He still lived there at the time of his daughter Margaret's wedding in 1911, so I suppose they were there in 1901, too.  His wife's name was Emily (née Divall).

Michael was born in Rudgewick, Sussex in 1847.

Another question - does the Hammersmith Friends Meeting House still exist?

Many thanks - and Happy New Year :D

Oxfordshire Completed Look Up Requests / John and Sarah HALE - COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 12 December 07 12:47 GMT (UK)  »
Help please : I am trying to find the  marriage of John and Sarah Hale, and also Sarah's place of birth and, maybe, maiden name! ;D  Their surname is variously spelt as Haile, Haille, Haill.......... :-\

In the 1841 census they are given as aged 60, Agr. Labourer, living in Stratton Audley, Oxfordshire. DofB 1781.  Sarah was not born in the county.

They had at least 5 children - William (1819), Susannah (1814-1817), Susannah (1817) - my ancestor, Thomas (1825-1826) and Caroline (1822).  These dates, from IGI, are of Christenings.

I cannot find them in the 1851 or 61 censuses.

Many thanks to anyone who can help me.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / A will written or proved......COMPLETED
« on: Tuesday 04 December 07 14:57 GMT (UK)  »
A quick question - When it says at the bottom of a will : PROVED at London, 10th June 1842......etc etc" - what exactly does "proved" mean? Is it the date on which the will was dictated (written), or the date on which it was read following the person's death?

Many thanks for any help!!

Nottinghamshire / ROSSI - the Quack Doctor?? COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 01 December 07 08:53 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for info about the father of John Charles Felix Rossi RA (usually just known as Charles Rossi).  I have some info :  He was Italian, born (probably) in Sienna, but was living and "practising" in Nottingham in 1762 when Charles was born on the 8th March.  In one of the obituaries of his son Charles, the father is  said to be "......a sort of quack-doctor to the neighbourhood". In other obituaries he is simply said to be an Italian Doctor or physician..... or ".....practised as a medical man, although he was not a licensed practitioner". - (The mind boggles :D).....

I have a vague idea his first name might have been Robert(o) - but as I can't find where I got this from, I might have dreamt it............. :-[

Many thanks for any help or info anyone can let me have.

Armed Forces / Boer war look up please - Herbert Arthur Clifford COMPLETED
« on: Tuesday 27 November 07 16:15 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for info about my Gt-Grandfather, Herbert Arthur Clifford, born 20th October 1863 at Kilburn Lodge, Hampstead, died in 1900 aged 36 in London of "Morbus Cordis" (I have another thread going on this!! :)).  He is supposed to have served in the Boer War and - according to an uncle (who so far seems to have been more often right than wrong)- caught Brights disease from an unfortunate encounter with a rat.......... He would have fought in the second Boer war at which time hewas married to Elizabeth Serena and his address was either Kilburn Lodge or, more probably, East Franklands, Wivelsfield.

His father was Charles Edward Clifford (1823 - 1903)

I would be very grateful for any info or tips of how to find out about him.

Many thanks
