London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Albert William Bouchard. b.1884 Was he a bigamist?
« on: Thursday 28 November 13 04:55 GMT (UK)  »
Albert William Bouchard b. Apr 1884 Covent garden London (father Louis, mother Elizabeth) married Annie Lilian Rouse in London Qtr 4 1916 (01d 247). However within a year she was living with my Grandfather (J.P.O'Connell) who had left my grandmother with two small children. Annie used her stage name of Anita Lilian Doyle during this relationship and they had seven children before they married in 1942. This was 3 months after my grandmother died hence freeing him to marry. Albert had died in 1940 so Anita was free to marry in 1942 and did state widow on the marriage cert
Just as interesting(!) is the story of Albert who married Miriam Mary Edney in 1929 (Southwark Qtr 2 1d 149) He claimed to be a widower on the certificate but his wife Annie was still alive.
I've tried to find a divorce record without success and wonder if anyone can help.

Cork / John Connell (O'Connell) b. Cork abt 1819and Mary Dempsy b. Cork abt 1825
« on: Tuesday 06 August 13 16:05 BST (UK)  »
My ancestors John Connell (b. abt 1819 – 23) and Mary Dempsy (b.abt 1825 – 1828) both born Cork Ireland on UK census returns. Have established John and Mary (surname O'Connell in UK 1861 census) with four sons (have their birth certs) from1852 onwards in Hackney London. Am trying to trace their Irish origins and when they emigrated. From Irish Parish records have John Connell and Mary Dempsy married 3 Apr 1845 Ballinhassig Cork Ireland. Looks as if these two had children Margaret Connell (b 28 Jan 1846 Innishannon - next door parish to Ballinhassig), and Ellen Connell (b.12 Aug 1848 Innishannon). However the girls do not appear in the UK census returns so must have died young or been left in Ireland if this is the right John and Mary. Can't find burial records to check this
Any information or ideas on how I can confirm the link would be much appreciated.

Lancashire / Catherine O'Connell/Power/Connelly b. abt 1846 Dublin
« on: Tuesday 16 April 13 00:41 BST (UK)  »
I could do with some local Liverpool expertise to untangle puzzles about Catherine.
She was the wife of Jeremiah O'Connell b.1854 Hackney appears in 1891 census Islington age 44 with Husband Jeremiah 39 Hawker. and son Jeremiah 13 b. Greenwich, dtr Catherine 8 b. Greenwich and dtr Sarah 2 b. Croydon. Family address is 82 Campbell Rd and Jeremiah is on electoral roll there in 1894 as a widower and dies from Campbell Rd in 1910. So looks like Catherine died between 1891 and 1894. Can't find her death cert!
I've got birth cert for dtr Catherine O'Connell b. 1883 Greenwich with mother formerly CONNELLY but bizarrely father Jeremiah, laborer is supposedly deceased. address of mother Mill Lane, Deptford. This right year for dtr Catherine but parents data seems strange.
I've also got birth cert for son Jeremiah b. 1878 Greenwich with father Jeremiah Hawker and mother Catherine formerly POWER. Address of Union Infirmary gives no clues.
There is an 1881 census in Kensington showing  Jeremiah 32 b. Hackney Hawker (This age is overstated he was born 1854 hence only 27), and Catherine 34 b. Ireland with two earlier children both born in Liverpool. Thomas 13, and Mary 11 together with (above from 1881) Jeremiah 3 son b 1878 Kensington (not Greenwich but the Greenwich address was the birth infirmary). Surely Thomas can't be Jeremiah's son as he would only have been 14 at the time so Catherine who was 7 years older was probably married before - so Thomas and Mary could have been Powers or another surname if this was Catherine's maiden name.
I can't find marriage cert for Jeremiah O'Connell and Catherine Power in period 1868 to 1891 in London. Can't find death cert for Catherine Power or O'Connell in 1891 to 1894 in London.
So I'd like to find out more from Liverpool connection can anyone help with Catherine Power or Connelly marrying Jeremiah O'Connell in Liverpool or with births of Thomas or Mary Power/Connelly or O'Connell born 1867/8 and 1869/70 respectively?
There is one complication -  there is a Thomas Power born Liverpool 1868 and Mary Power born 1869 and these seem to fit with a family Power in Toxteth in 1871 census but parents Michael and Mary are not right - so are there other Thomas and Mary Powers/Connelly  or O'Connell?
Any help in untangling this would be much appreciated
I'm not used to Rootschat yet so could do with advice on how to Post. There are obviously Liverpool and London questions here would it be sensible to post on the London chat as well?

Kent / Sarah Brooker b.abt 1828 in Chatham and her family.
« on: Sunday 31 March 13 04:48 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for Sarah Brooker's family, where she was in 1841  and 1851 and her marriage to Thomas Jones. She is the mother on my great grandmother's (Sarah Jones) birth cert 13 Mar 1861 as Sarah Jones (formerly Brooker). She also appears on the 1861 census as Sarah Jones 31 b. Chatham with baby Sarah 1 mo old. They were visitors in the home of William and Eliza Reading 27 Turners St Tower Hamlets. I think her husband Thomas Jones must have died while she was pregnant with baby Sarah (hence in 1860) because she is marked with a "W" in the "condition" column.
I can't find her in 1871 nor her other daughter Margrite b.1856 but this may be because she married again and had a different surname
I'd like to track Thomas Jones too but there are so many with that name and I thought it would be helpful to see if they were together in 1851.
I'd appreciate any help in tracking them down.

I'm hoping this will give info on his parents and help me back to earlier generations.

Carmarthenshire / Henry Jones and Ann marriage 1871 to 1881 -help please
« on: Friday 27 April 12 05:38 BST (UK)  »
I've had great help from the Carmarthen registrars in tracking my Gt Gt Grandfather Henry Jones b Llanartheny abt 1810 and his first family. He married Mary Davies (or David) in Llanartheny on 6th Oct 1827 (witness -David Jones - possibly a father since they were underage). I've found nine children all born in Llannon parish. After Mary died at Rhydsarne Llannon in 1864 he remarried an Ann (no surname). He was a widower in 1871 but married Ann before 1881 when they were in the census at Glanyrafon in Llandebie. The registrars drew a blank on finding a second marriage certificate. If I could find it there is a chance it would confirm his father and help me back to the earlier generations. Can anyone help?

Armed Forces / Significance of Service number
« on: Friday 13 April 12 01:11 BST (UK)  »
I've noticed from other people's posts on this and WW1 forum that a man's service number can sometimes be used to date and place where he signed on.
I have 3 ancestors who were in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders.
Patrick O'Connell b. 1884 A&SH no 9568 in 2nd Btn A&SH (attested no 8048 7th Btn Rifle Brigade Militia 1904 in London)
John O'Connell b. 1889 A&SH no 1194 in the 7th Btn A&SH (attested no 7007 Royal Fusiliers 1907 in London) Hon. discharge 1915
James O'Connell b. 1892 A&SH no 439  (can't find his attestation info). Died in France 1916
I'd appreciate it if someone can help me use these army mumbers to find when and where they joined the A&SH?
It seems surprising that James had such a low number when he must have joined significantly later than the others.

Armed Forces / Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders dress uniform
« on: Thursday 15 March 12 03:49 GMT (UK)  »
John O'Connell 7th Battalion A&SHighlanders Co Sgt Major No 9591 discharged sick 1915, also Acting Sergeant RASC 147917 Honorary  discharge 1917
This photo of my grandfather was taken (I think) about 1918 but certainly around the end of the war.
When I showed it at the Argyll & Highlanders museum they said the only things about the uniform recognisable to them were the A&SH socks!!
Can anyone else explain any more of the uniform?
