« on: Wednesday 13 October 21 05:42 BST (UK)  »
One of my ancestors, Henry Jones, was innkeeper of the Prince of Saxe Coburg pub in Carmarthenshire in the 1820s.
I am trying to locate the pub which I thought was in llandarrog but can find no reference.
Help in locating it would be appreciated

There is a gravestone in Llanarthne churchyard, Carmarthenshire, for
Daniel Jones son of David Jones of Dan yr Allt, in this Parish who departed this life, July 21 180? aged 8 months. (the last number on the date is indistinct)
also to the memory of Mary of the above named who departed this life January 1826 aged 1? years (again there is an indistinct number on the age)
Also to the memory of David Jones who departed this life June 24 1851 died age 65 years
I've searched Parish records on FindMyPast but can not find these deaths recorded.
Is there an possible reason for this or should I look elsewhere?

« on: Friday 17 September 21 05:26 BST (UK)  »
Henry Jones married Mary Davies (David) in Llanartheny  6/10/1827
I am trying to complete records for their nine children.
Using ages estimated from census returns where the children were all stated as born Llannon I have
David 1828
Mary 1830
John 1832
Ann 1834
William 1837
Daniel 1841 (have cert for him born 24/11/1841 Penyrheol Llannon
Eleazor 1843 (have cert for him born 20/3/1843 Penyrheol Llannon
Thomas 1845 ( Have cert for him 29/8/1845 born Penyrheol Llannon
Elizabeth 1852
I can't find the others and wonder if the earlier births were perhaps not in Llannon
Can anyone help with the remaining birth dates and places please

Carmarthenshire / David Jones of Danyrallt Llanartheny who died 1837
« on: Sunday 12 September 21 05:50 BST (UK)  »
I am writing up some earlier research on my Jones family which I pursued with a lot of help here on Rootschat. That research led to some conclusions on the family of Henry Jones birth about 1810 in Llanartheny. His Grandfather was almost certainly David Jones who died at Danyyrallt, Llanartheny on 11/7/1837 with probate 17/7/1837. However I can't find an age at death for David and hence birth date. Can anyone help with this?

Glamorganshire / Walter Thomas Hunt/Jones name change in 1891
« on: Tuesday 12 January 21 01:49 GMT (UK)  »
Am trying to find Walter Thomas Jones/Hunt (born 27 May 1868 Bridgewater Somerset with father Alfred Hunt) in the 1891 census probably in Pontypridd Wales.
Walter was my grandfather and I know he walked from Woolavington, Somerset to Wales for work.
The last record I have for him in Somerset was with his Hunt family age 13 in Woolavington 1881 census.
What makes searching for him complicated is he changed his name to Jones at some point
He married Sarah Jones on 4/8/1891 in Pontypridd - gave his name as Walter Jones, a collier. residence Llwynpia with father Henry Thomas Jones. I believe the father's name was fictitious.
With the marriage so soon after the 1891 census he must have already moved to Wales from Somerset so should appear somewhere in Wales and probably in the Rhondda.
He does appear in the 1901 census again claiming he was born in Wales but in 1911 he fessed up and gave his birthplace as Bridgewater, so I know I have the right man!
His eldest sister Mary Ann (Hunt) married Albion Wheadon in 1876 in Bridgewater and had moved to Wales in time for the 1881 census when she was living at 22 Rhys St Ystrad (close to Llwynpia). So Walter probably followed her and Albion to Wales but he was not living in her home in 1881.
I am trying to find a reason for his name change and hope the 1881 census might give a clue but can't find him under either name.
Any help would be gratefully received.

Glamorganshire / Ynyshir schools in 1916 to 1925 era
« on: Friday 01 May 20 01:40 BST (UK)  »
My mother Phyllis Jones and her twin brother Leslie were born 28/1/1911 at 9 Whitting Street, Ynyshir.
I am trying to find out about their education and for how long they were at school.  I know they went to an infants school which according to family story was "at end of Whitting St" in Ynyshir.
Can anyone tell me where I can find info on that school and whether it is possible to search for school rolls of that era?

Thanks Ian

Glamorganshire / Walter Jones or was he still Walter Hunt in Ynyshir in 1891
« on: Tuesday 10 March 20 05:06 GMT (UK)  »
My grandfather was Walter Thomas Hunt born in Bridgewater Somerset 27/5/1868 and he is in the 1881 census age 13 with his Hunt  family in Woolavington
At some point he moved to Wales because in 10/8/1891 he married Sarah Jones in Pontypridd Wales ( I have the certificate) and they raised a family in 9 Whitting St, Ynyshir. However he had by then changed his name to Walter Jones and misleadingly cited a father as Henry Thomas Jones on the marriage cert.
I've established this is the same person because eventually he changed his census returns (1911) to confirm his Bridgewater place of birth although he didn't change his name.
I was hoping that the 1891 census just 4-5 months before his marriage might shed some light on where and with whom he was living and possibly give clues to explain the name change, but cannot find him either as Walter Thomas Hunt or Walter Jones in Somerset or Wales.
Any help would be appreciated

Trying to trace the maternal line of my welsh family
Looking for mother of Ann Rees b. 1824  Llanrhydian Penclawdd who married Watkin Watkin in 1846 Sharon Chapel, Abergavenny. On marriage cert the fathers were John Rees (possibly a metalweigher - indistinct) and John Watkins.
Think I have the father John Rees, probate 1874, Penclawdd age 73 (so b. abt 1800) with Ann Rees widow, so mother was another Ann.
Also John Rees and the mother Ann are in Penclawdd census 1851, 61 and 71. Can't see 41.
If I could find their marriage I could get Ann's maiden name - can anyone help with this?

Cork / Jeremiah Connell/O'Connell and Julia Cronan in County Cork
« on: Sunday 13 May 18 15:22 BST (UK)  »
Trying to find origin of Jeremiah O'C b. abt 1820 and Julia Cronan b. abt 1822 both in County Cork.
They appear in 1851 in Jerusalem Gardens, Hackney with son Patrick age 3. all born in Ireland on the census. I'm questioning the Irish origin however.
Have found birth cert for a Patrick O'C b. 1847 Hackney (mother name Cronin) and also a marriage cert Julia Cronan 28, and Jeremiah O'C 29 also in Hackney 1850. Think these may be the same people with Patrick born out of wedlock. Can't immediately see baptism and marriage possibilities in Ireland or births in the UK.
The family also appears in Hackney in 1861 with Jeremiah Wdr. son Patrick 13 (now born Hackney!), son Thomas b.1856 and dtr Margaret b. 4th Qtr 1851 (after census). These birth certs show mother Julia Cronan.
Would like to find where Jeremiah and Julia came from in County Cork assuming they were both born there..
Any help would be appreciated.
Ian
