Armed Forces / Children of "Blackwatch" Soldier
« on: Saturday 13 January 07 13:22 GMT (UK)  »
My ggg-grandfather John GARDINER was born in Edinburgh about 1806. John served in the 42nd (Royal Highland) Regiment "The Blackwatch" and married English born Phoebe ALLEN in 1832 while stationed in Malta. John & Phoebe returned with the regiment to Edinburgh in 1836 where a daughter Charlotte was born early in 1837.

In 1839 the regiment was posted to Ireland and garrisoned at Dublin's Royal Barracks. Two daughters (the elder my gg-grandmother, Matilda Somerville GARDINER) were born during this period. By the 1841 census the family and regiment had returned to Scotland and were based at Stirling Castle.

In late 1842 John (now Quartermaster Sergeant, Reserve Batallion of the 42nd Regiment) & young family return to Malta where he saw out his military service in 1846. On retirement John took a pension but elected to remain in Malta after the departure of the regiment in 1847 and was appointed Garrison Quartermaster Sergeant, a position he held until his death in October 1849. A son John Somerville GARDINER was born in 1847.

Can anyone advise how I might get details (or certificate) of Matilda's birth in Ireland? Would she have been considered Irish or British? I am also intrigued by the given name 'Somerville' as I have no idea of it's significance to the family - any ideas?

Cheshire / Looking for FISHER/RIGBY marriage
« on: Wednesday 03 January 07 09:51 GMT (UK)  »
My great-great grandfather HENRY FISHER's (possibly twin) brother John FISHER is shown in the 1851 census aged 17 an apprentice Brass Finisher. I am confident it is him who appears again in the 1871 census aged 37 a Brass Finisher living at 59 Mill Street, Monks Coppenhall. By this time he is married to Mary with two sons William James FISHER (aged 4) and John Henry Rigby FISHER (aged 2).

I believe it is his widowed mother-in-law Mary RIGBY who owns the house. Naming convention seems to fit here - John & Mary's eldest son William James is named after his paternal and maternal grandfathers, and I suspect that the second son John Henry Rigby is named after his father, his uncle (twin) and his mother's maiden name. The subsequent eldest daughter is named Mary after both grandmothers.

Would appreciate any help in finding the marriage of John FISHER to Mary (RIGBY) to substantiate this?

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Any keen photographers near Mount Pleasant?
« on: Monday 13 November 06 11:48 GMT (UK)  »
I would greatly appreciate it if anyone could photograph the buildings at each of the following Liverpool addresses and email them to me via PM. I fully understand that the current buildings may long have replaced those which my ancestors inhabited, but I would love to have an appreciation of the locations.

     1. Numbers 67, 99 and 111 Mount Pleasant, Liverpool
     2. Number 15 Rodney Street, Liverpool
     3. Number 83 Renshaw Street, Liverpool (sorry, bit of a hike)

In eager anticipation,

Armed Forces / Frederick Victor FISHER, DCM, 12th Battalion Kings Royal Rifle Corps
« on: Tuesday 17 October 06 13:49 BST (UK)  »
G'Day to all,

My great uncle Frederick Victor FISHER (known as Vic) was killed in the Somme 2 April 1918 during WWI. The Pozieres Memorial records;

In memory of Sergeant Frederick Victor Fisher DCM
R/9398 12 Bn. Kings Royal Rifle Corps
who died aged 33 on 2 April 1918
son of William Henry Fisher of "Hillcrest" 6 Bournemouth Park Rd, Southend-On-Sea;
husband of Sarah Jane Fisher of 92 Brockenhurst St, Fulledge, Burnley, Lancs.

His two elder brothers had emigrated to Australia prior to the war and this memorial record is the only reference I have to his being married. I know nothing of his wife or possible family.

Do I have a better chance finding his army record (and next of kin details) because he was KIA than if he had returned? Given that I am in Australia, where should I start my search?

Regards,

FishMan
