The Common Room / Value of estate
« on: Thursday 03 July 08 14:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters!  :)

Could you please give me some help with the following?

I have a gentleman who died in 1887 and left no will. Administration of his estate was granted to his wife and the gross value of his personal estate was £271.15.0

Was this a small or large amount of money in 1887?  ??? (He was a lincensed victualler & wood dealer in Dartford, Kent.)

Any help will be gratefully received!

Armed Forces / Navy List of Napoleonic War - help please
« on: Tuesday 03 June 08 13:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi rootschatters!

I wonder if there is a kind soul out there who has access to the Complete Navy List of the Napoleonic Wars (1798 - 1815)?

I have two family members listed, Richard JEWERS, and his son, Richard Francis JEWERS. I can only view their names, rank and year of death. The only way to access their full details is by ordering the CD, which is about £60!!   :o   :'(

Any help, or alternative suggestions, gratefully received!  ;D

Family History Beginners Board / Death cert woes - BMD incorrect??!!
« on: Thursday 22 May 08 12:04 BST (UK)  »
Hello Rootschatters!

I have just received an email from the GRO saying they cannot issue a death cert I ordered because the age at death I submitted is not the same as that on the certificate.  ???

I got the info from Ancestry and BMD, saw the scanned image of the original page of the register, so am rather perplexed!

Requested: Death cert for William Packman, Apr-Jun 1887 Dartford; 2a 250
Age at death: 61.

Is it possible for the BMD to be incorrect, and if so, how do I find/get my death certificate?  :'(

I did try and phone GRO, was on hold for 15 minutes, then tried again to be told they are disconnecting my call due to the vast amount of calls being received.

Has anyone else come across this? All advice and help gratefully received!

Family History Beginners Board / Missing Death Record?!
« on: Saturday 10 May 08 15:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters!

Hope someone may be able to shed some light on to this for me as it is driving me round the bend!!!  ???

I have the exact date of death for someone - 26 Oct 1957 (taken from their gravestone) and am trying (and failing) to find the death record in the BMD.

I was wondering if anyone knew why this may be the case? I have varied the surname spelling, and checked all quarters for 1956, 1957 and 1958 but no luck.

Any help/suggestions gratefully received!

Travelling People / Olphus = Alfred?
« on: Tuesday 05 February 08 13:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters, hope someone can shed some light on this one!

I am researching a gypsy family who seemed to like changing their names, including their surname, and it has caused no end of confusion!!

Would the name Olphus be linked in anyway to the name Alfred?

Thanks for any help!

Hello Rootschatters!!

Hope someone can help me out with this one.

If you died on board a ship, out at sea ( in the 1820s-1840s) where would your death be registered?

Any help much appreciated!

Armed Forces / Death at sea
« on: Sunday 27 January 08 11:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Rootschatters. Some help required with a naval problem please.  ???

I am trying to find out what happened to a Lieutenant Jewers. He died on board a ship (the gallant mast came down and hit him in the forehead and knocked him overboard.  :o)

I have a transcripted letter from a Lieutenant BURGHAAGEN, of the 60th Regt. who was on board when Lieut. Jewers died and describes his death on "the 12th of November". Unfortunately the YEAR is missing from the date on the letter (which is the 6th of January), and Lt. Burghaagen makes no mention of the ship they were on, or where the ship was when the accident occurred. The letter was sent from "London, Queens Square No. 8, Westminster" to Portsmouth to Jewers family. The letter mentions "he only had one hand for himself and one for the King". So before Queen Victoria came to the throne in 1837 I presume.

The only other information I have is that a Captain STRAWBENZEE/STRAUBENZEE  83 Regt and Captain Kirby/Kerby Capt Regt  who were on deck at the time of the accident. I unfortunately do not have the original letter, and the transcripted version is all the family has regarding this incident.

How would I find out when/where he died?  How can I find out who were Captains/Lieutenants for the 83rd regiment & 60th regiment and when?

Any help would be very much appreciated!!
Thank you,
Tamar
