South Africa / Where to find WW2 Military Records?
« on: Friday 12 June 20 15:24 BST (UK)  »
Hello fellow Rootschatters,

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction after spending weeks going round in circles!

I'm trying to find out about my grandfather's WW2 military career. Hilary Max Torry was born in 1912 in Cheshire, UK but was living in South Africa when war broke out.

We believe he initially joined the Transvaal Scottish (we have a photo of him wearing their uniform), but later joined the Medical Corps (again, we have a photograph of him wearing a uniform with the Medical Corps lapel badges.) Family lore is he went to North Africa and Italy, and at some point towards the end of the war he was involved in a convalescent hospital in Brighton before returning to South Africa. We would love to be able to find out more than what we know from a couple of photo's and some verbal recollections.

Does anyone know where to try and get details of his Military Records? As he served in SA I'm assuming I need South African records. I've tried the South African Defence Force Archive email  (mentioned in posts here and on other sites) but my email just gets pinged back. I've used search engines but am going round in circles and still can't find anything.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

FH Documents and Artefacts / Help dating watch please! *COMPLETED*
« on: Saturday 18 August 12 10:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters!

Can you please help me date this little gold watch?

Face is 2.5cms/1 inch diam, on a black ribbon with gold clasp.

There are 3 stamps on the inside but I cannot get a clear enough photo so have had to draw the symbols - apologies for my poor drawing quality. The first stamp is a small "n" within a circle; the second stamp is for 9ct gold; and the third stamp is like a crosshair within a square, and what looks like a very feint "L" within the circle. I have tried to date it by looking up the stamps but got completely confused - there doesn't seem to be an assay office stamp on the watch, or at least not one that I can recognise.

Any help very much appreciated!

The Common Room / Help to identify photo of church please.
« on: Friday 07 May 10 13:04 BST (UK)  »
Hello Rootschatters!  ;D

Hope one of you kind souls can help out with this photo of a church!
My mum found it in a box of old photographs she has, and has no idea where the church is. She has obviously kept the image for many years so it must be relevant to the family somehow and we would be ever so grateful if someone could solve the mystery.

Many thanks!

US Lookup Requests / Boston, MA birth & census look up PLEASE
« on: Tuesday 09 February 10 23:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters  :)

This is a long shot, but nothing ventured, nothing gained!
What follows is ALL the information I have about this person, and ANY help or advice would be gratefully received!

Am trying to find CHARLES REID born in Boston, Massachusetts circa 1856.
His father was Charles Reid (a Gardener), mother Mary.

Charles was living in Edinburgh, Scotland by 1888 as he married there. The marriage certificate is where the information regarding his parents is from. Both parents were deceased by 1888 according to the information on the certificate.

I have found him on both the 1891 and 1901 Scottish Census. I am trying to piece together his life in America, and whether or not his parents were from the US or not. I cannot find a record for him entering the UK.

Any help is very much appreciated!
Thank you,
Tamar

« on: Thursday 04 February 10 14:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,   ;D

Could some kind soul help me out with finding a possible marriage in Edinburgh? I have only just statred this research and am not 100% sure I'm going in the right direction, also the first time my research has lead to Scotland!

Am trying to find a Charles REID (born circa 1857 in Boston, Massachusetts to Scottish parents) who married a Catherine Mary ??   sometime around 1887. Catherine Mary was born in Edinburgh, as were all their children, so I am assuming the marriage took place there.

They had the following children all born in Edinburgh:
Margaret Mary bc 1889
Catherine J      bc 1890
Sarah W          bc 1892
Charlotte R      bc 1895
Charles            bc 1898

Any help or extra information would be a HUGE help!

Mant thanks,
Tamar

Hampshire & IOW Completed Lookup Requests / Burial 1763 St. Thomas, Portsmouth
« on: Friday 11 September 09 13:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters  ;D

Wondered if any of you kind folk could help me out with this fella:-

William Jewer, buried 22 June 1763 St. Thomas, Portsmouth. (info from NBI)

I am trying to find out his age. I was wondering if any one has access to the parish records, if there would be more info available regarding William, for instance, how old he was when he died?

I have reached a dead end with him, as I have no idea how old he was I can't work any further backwards. He was married in 1748 and had children but no way of knowing if he was married before and no further clues fron the IGI. He died without leaving a will (have found documents relating to the administration of his estate) however still no idea as to age!

Any info, or suggestions, gladly received!!

Many thanks,
Tamar  :)

The Common Room / Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. - journey times/lengths?
« on: Saturday 02 May 09 08:43 BST (UK)  »
Hello Rootschatters!  ;D

I have tried to google my question but getting nowhere fast, so thought I'd ask you!

In the 1920's, on steamships, how long would a journey take from:  ???
1) Southampton to Vigo, Spain. (Royal Mail Steam Packet Co.)
2) Liverpool to Colon, Panama. (Pacific Steam Navigation Co.)

I have various bits and pieces from the UK Incoming Passenger List, and the Outgoing, but they don't give dates for the foreign arrival or departure.

If any one has a link to a website which has more info that would be great!

Many thanks,
Tamar

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Clean up and date please for Arthur
« on: Friday 06 February 09 15:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,  :)

I am always amazed at the skills you all have with the photo's, so thought I'd see if you could help with Arthur, my great-great grandfather.

A clean up would be great, and if possible maybe also a sepia copy? I want to frame him and add him to my Wall of Ancestors.

Any idea on date? He was born in 1848 if that helps.

Many thanks!
Tamar
