Midlothian / Ross and McKinnan
« on: Wednesday 07 August 13 15:00 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I am trying to find details on my ancestors: David Ross and Catherine McKinnan.
I do not know when they were born, nor exactly where, except that it was 'in Rosshire'.
Catherine's father was Alexander McKinnan

David and Catherine married at Canongate, Edinburgh 2 September 1807 and it is from this record that I gained the extra information.

(I am going to post this same message on the Ross and Cromarty forum as well - just in case)

I know that my information is not very detailed but here's hoping!  ;)

Bye for now

Kirk

PS
David and Catherine had a daughter named Isabella who was born in in Edinburgh married James Tweedie, moved to London, where they had a tailor's shop, and died in the London cholera epidemic

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Sarah Elizabeth Biddell née Owen
« on: Monday 05 August 13 20:35 BST (UK)  »
Dear Rootschatters,
Emboldened by the help I received in a previous request I have another difficult case.  This is Sarah Elizabeth Biddell.
She is the daughter of Thomas William Owen and his wife Betsy (née Budd).  This is the information I currently have:

Sarah Elizabeth Owen (b.1830)
Born 24 February and baptised 22 June at St. Andrew Holborn.  Married 2 December 1850, George Biddell (b.1828) and had at least one child:

Emily Catherine Biddell b.1852
Born 12 July 1852 at Britannia Row, Islington.  Baptised 3 October 1852 at the Parish Church of St Mary Islington.

I found her in the 1841 census (aged 11) but after 1852 I can find nothing else.  I have a feeling that perhaps the left the country but I am not sure.

Is anyone able to help?

Bye for now

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Sidney Long
« on: Friday 02 August 13 21:15 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am trying to get some information on Sidney Long.

I only have him recorded in the 1901 and 1911 censuses.

1901 he is aged eight and living with my great-grandfather Arthur Owen and his partner Emily Jane Owen at 26 Copenhagen Place, Limehouse

1911 he is aged 18 and living at Copenhagen Place with Arthur and Emily.  He has no occupation.  I don't think that he is anything to do with Emily because Arthur wrote that Sidney was his nephew in 1911 and living there at the same time was Henry Brett who Arthur writes is 'wife's brother'...

In both instances he is listed as being Arthur's nephew but there is no one who I can think of in the family who's child he might be and no one married a 'Long'.  I thought about illegitimate children but I can't see why they would disguise his surname. and call him Arthur's nephew.

It is difficult.  :-\

I cannot seem to find anything in the FreeBMD.

I know nothing about him apart from the census returns, and no one ever spoke of someone named Sidney Long being part of the family, however Arthur was somewhat estranged from his children in later life.

Can anyone assist?

Bye for now

Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Rothwell Burial Records
« on: Wednesday 31 July 13 20:34 BST (UK)  »
The other day I wrote to see if anyone could look up the burial records for Desborough as I am hunting down Randal and Mary Flude.  I have had a kind reply with information for Desborough after the year 1813 and while the Fludes may still have lived and died there earlier that 1813, I am thinking that they 'might' have died in Rothwell.  I base this on the fact that some of their children were living there.
Does anyone have access to these records?  I am looking for burials after the year 1790
Thank you
Kirk

Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Desborough Burial Records
« on: Monday 29 July 13 19:52 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
Is anyone able to look up the burial records for Desborough for me?
I am looking for the surname Flude and in particular Randall and Mary. They may be other burials of Fludes there too.
They were alive in 1791 and I am 90% certain that they lived and died in Desborough.  I say 90% because they earlier lived in the Langtons, just over the border but when I was back in England recently I was able to check the records and could find no burials for them.  I did visit the churchyard but if they had had them, there are now no legible gravestones with this surname.

Randal and Mary were born in 1740s/50s.

If any one is able to look these up for me it will be a huge help because even if they were not buried there at least it can be crossed off the list of possibilities..

Thank you and bye for now

Armed Forces / Oxford Light Infantry?
« on: Saturday 20 October 12 12:30 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I have recently come into the possession of a photograph which shows a group of soldiers.  I have had a look at it using a magnifying glass and it would appear that these men are linked to the Oxford Light Infantry.  This is a guess on my part based upon some internet research. It also looks to me as though they are wearing dress uniform for the photograph.  Once again this is a guess on my part. Is anyone able to shed some light upon this?
Thank you
Kirk

I include a photograph:

Gloucestershire / David Rees
« on: Saturday 03 March 12 17:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I have just stumbled across what might be an exciting record . . . although it might not be because of course, in FT Research, nothing is simple nor always what it might seem  ;)

The record was located on the IGI and is this:

David Rees married Ann Lee 26 June 1799 at the Church of St Mary de Crypt, Gloucester.

I want to find out more about this record.
Is anyone able to help?
Is David a bachelor or is he widower.  Who were the witnesses?  Does it say that David comes from a different location to GLoucester?
Also I wonder if there was any mention of this in a local newspaper.

Thank you
Kirk

Kent / William Vant 1753
« on: Monday 20 February 12 19:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I'm in the midst of tracing the Vant family and I have come across an interesting combination.
My ancestor WIlliam Vant was born in 1753, married at GIllingham and lived most of his life at Halstow Lower.
I have spotted on the IGI a WV baptised in 1753 at Molash which isn't too far away.
This William's parents are WIlliam and sarah and it would appear that they were married at Challock in 1750 and lived at Molash and then Ham.
I am thinking that it is probably too good to be true that this all links up so nicely.
Also, I was always of the opinion that the Vants came from the Netherlands which I suppose could be true - just earlier than I expected.
What do you think?
Doing my research from Germany is rather isolating so I would be interested to hear other views on this.
Thanks
Kirk
