Census and Resource Discussion / 1911 census
« on: Tuesday 07 December 10 14:03 GMT (UK)  »
I'm not sure where to post this, or even if it has been discussed, but I can't find mention of it anywhere.  I'm probably looking in the wrong place:  What I want to know is - come January 1911 will the 'infirmity' blanked out columm become :-\ unblanked at that time?

Other Countries / Edward Pennicott
« on: Saturday 14 August 10 11:40 BST (UK)  »
My grandmother's brother Edward Pennicott was born in 1863 in Sussex.  He joined the army in 1885 and on 15 November 1889 whilst serving in India he was discharged on his own request for a payment of £18.00 in Lahore.

I have obtained a death certificate - through the auspices of reading the Indian part in this forum - where he died in Khargpur on 21 December 1934.  He was deemed to have been a retired police inspector.

I have a photo of Edward with his 'wife' Elvira at their home in Khargpur.  Is it possible that they married and if so would it be possible to verify this?  Elvia is not mentioned on the death certificate.

I also wonder if it is possible to obtain a copy - if one exists - of his career in the Indian Police Force?

United States of America / Marriage for George Hamlin
« on: Wednesday 14 July 10 23:41 BST (UK)  »
I'm not sure that anyone can help me but if they could I would  be truly grateful.

I am looking for a marriage between George Hamlin b. 1856 in England and Susan ??? born c 1865 in England.  They both arrived in New York independently - George in 1873 and Susan as a small child.

On the 1900 Chautauqua, New York US census George and Susan said that they had been married for 18 years. How difficult wold it be to look through the New York registers to find a marriage for this couple?  I would dearly like to know the surname of Susan.

South Africa / Marriage certificate
« on: Thursday 17 June 10 22:43 BST (UK)  »
I expect that you have been asked this many times - but here goes anyway!

My grandmother's sister - therefore my mother's aunt -according to the IGI Jeremiah Austin married Emily Pennicott 30 January 1892 in Durban, Natal, South Africa.

It was always known that Emily went to live in South Africa and married 'Jerry Austin' - but I would like to know where I could obtain a marriage certificate for this couple?

It was always assumed in my generation of the family that Jerry came from the next village in Sussex, where there were a number of Austins, but I now have my doubts, and believe that perhaps he was born in South Africa, and Emily met him whilst living/working there.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / Guernsey deaths and burials
« on: Tuesday 08 June 10 13:56 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if there is someone who looks at RootsChat who can help me find 3 burials on Guernsey?

I was given 2 of these a very many years ago by an elderly gentleman but he gave no references and I would like to see if in fact these are correct:

The first is for Samuel Hamlin who was purported to have been buried 9 November 1877 - his last known address from the 1871 census is: Hubitt's Road, St. Martin, Geurnsey.  Samuel was aged 73 on this census.

Also his daughter Eliza Hamlin was buried 20 November 1861; last known address also Hubitt's Road, St. Martin, Guernsey.

This one is a bit more tricky!  Samuel Hamlins wife Mary Hamlin who has disappeared between 1871 and 1881.  Last known address the 1871 census as before.  Mary was 72 on the 1871 census.  Did she also die and was buried between these dates?

If someone could be so kind to have a look I would be very grateful.  This family moved to Geurnsey from Somerset between 1841 and 1851 as per those censuses.

Armed Forces / Army rank
« on: Friday 02 April 10 23:34 BST (UK)  »
I have a great uncle who served  his time in the Army Ordnance Corp and when he left his rank was decribed as 'conductor'.

Several years later as a mourner at a relatives funeral he described himself as 'captain'.  Was  he promoting himself or was 'conductor' an equivalent of 'captain'?

I would be very interested if someone were to enlighten me.

In anticipation, Anna
