The Common Room / Gaol Records
« on: Tuesday 01 February 05 05:22 GMT (UK)  »

My convict ancestor Stephen Le Busque was tried at the Derby Assizes 15th July 1826.  Arrived at the “Justicia” Hulk in Woolwich on 24th August, 1826 before being transferred to the “Andromeda” 29th September 1826 for transportation to Australia.

The actual incident happened on the 5th June, 1826 in Little Chester near Derby at the Dwelling house of William Ling.

Where would he have been held for the month until the trial took place and the month before he was sent to the "Justicia"?

Are there records available?

Keep on searching :)

Family History Beginners Board / Help finding GRECO'S
« on: Tuesday 04 January 05 02:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hope someone can advise me, with my GRECO family.

I am at a loss as to how to go about tracking down a grandfather.

The gentleman concerned is Reginald Alexander GREGORY.
Reginald said that he arrived in Australia on the “Oruba”, and that he was born at the turn of the century, and went to school in Bendigo.

I have his Australianmarriage certificate which puts his birth about 1898 and the place Forest Gate London. His parents: Ambrose GREGORY and Mary BLACKBURN.  Unfortunately Mary turned out to be his step-mother.

The shipping list for the “Oruba” arrived in Melbourne in August 1908.
On the shipping list is the GRECO family consisting of: -
Ambrose GRECO, Mrs GRECO and 10-year-old Reginald GRECO (they came from England)
Electoral Roll for 1911 in Bendigo Victoria I have found a listing for:-
Ambrose GRECO and his "wife" Annie.
Annie disappears after this, can't find death.  Ambrose marries Mary BLACKBURN nee BLANDTHORN in 1913. States he is single.

Somewhere between 1913 and 1920 the family name changed from GRECO to GREGORY.

My problem is I can't find a birth for Reginald Alexander GRECO in the GRO indexes and can't find him listed on the 1901 census.  Ambrose is listed as single and living with his parents in St George's Road, West Ham.

I have found a Reginald Alexander AITCHISON born Dec qtr 1897 Colchester ESSEX and on the census in 1901 living with a SMITH family with relationship as being Nurse Childs.
What is a Nurse Childs?  Is he a possibility? Where is Colchester in relation to London?

Hope someone can adivse

Monmouthshire Lookup Requests / PODESTA - 1861 Census lookup please
« on: Saturday 01 January 05 12:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

The family I'm trying to find information on is PODESTA.

Angelina PODESTA born 13th February 1855 - 50 Mary Street, Cardiff
married Francis GRECO 23rd October 1871 at St Woolos Monmouth.

I have found the family on the 1871 census, Father was the lodging house keeper at 73, 74 & 75 Canal Pde, Newport

The family is as follows:-
John (Johanne on BC) PODESTA age 50 born Genoa Italy
Sara PODESTA (nee FOSTER) age 37 born Ipswich Suffolk
Angelina PODESTA age 16 born Cardiff GLAM (census states Newport, but I have BC)
Josephine PODESTA age 14 born Newport MON
John F PODESTA age 11 born Newport MON
Ambrose PODESTA age 1 3/4 born Newport MON

Angelina's birth and marriage certificates state her fathers occupation as a musician.
Francis GRECO was lodging at 73 Canal Pde in 1871.
Francis is the lodging house keeper for 72 to 75 Canal Pde, Newport in 1881 census.

If someone could check the 1861 census for Newport for me it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
