Clare / Bridget and Ann BURKE Clarecastle COMPLETED
« on: Friday 17 August 07 18:53 BST (UK)  »
Since starting this thread, I have been given two letters written by members of the Burke family - which have got me into a complete muddle!!  I have started a thread in London (this is the link http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,363216.msg2397834.html#msg2397834 - title of thread is "Denis Cooke - HELP").

I would be very grateful if someone from Clare could have a look at the thread in case it rings any bells!

Many thanks

Tilly

Please could somebody help me find Ann BURKE, born abt 1834 in County Clare. Her mother's name was Bridget and she was a "layerouter" ! I'm afraid I don't know anything else about her family.... Ann went to England and married a Richard Cook, and they lived in London.  I have looked on the Clare Library site, but cannot find anything...
I'd be very grateful for any help.

South Africa / Elizabeth Serena Clifford - Durban COMPLETED
« on: Thursday 16 August 07 19:02 BST (UK)  »
I would be very grateful for help finding information about my Great Grandmother Elizabeth Serena Clifford née Brimfield.  Her husband Herbert Arthur Clifford died in 1900. She was born in Chelsea, Middx in 1868 and emigrated to South Africa (probably Durban) sometime after 1901 (she is in a census in England then) with four of her children (Hilda, Violet, Cecil and Arthur), her boyfriend (could be E. T. Paul) and the family silver!  I have two scraps of a will that could be hers, giving a death in 1935 and mentioning a payment to be made to a solicitor in Durban.  I do not know whether she died in England  or South Africa - more probably S.A as I cannot find any trace of her in England.  I have tried to find something  - date of emigration, death etc, but no luck - could someone point me in the right direction please?! Many thanks.

Help please - How can I go about finding the marriage of Edward Clifford - born St George Hanover Square in abt 1797, his eldest child born in abt 1823/26 - so I suppose the marriage was around 1820/22?  His wife's Christian name is SARAH (born in Marylebone in abt 1800). Her maiden name MIGHT have been Rossi - but it is a very big "MIGHT".... I have tried Ancestry and IGI, but no luck. I'd be very grateful for any tips!
Many thanks.

Help please - I have found George W Rix in the censuses from 1871 to 1901. I have a small problem with the place of birth - from 1871 to 1891 it is given as CROMER and in 1901, when he has moved and is married, as WISBEACH (both in Norfolk). In the birth register, first quarter 1865, there is a George William Rix born in ERPINGHAM. Can I be reasonably sure this is the same George? Many thanks!

He was married in 1849 at St James Westminster, to Eliza Clark (born 1832) and died in 1903 in Portsmouth.
Many thanks to anyone who can help.

Quaker Family History / A QUAKER SASH....."Peace and Plenty...."COMPLETED
« on: Tuesday 31 July 07 09:18 BST (UK)  »
My cousin has a sash which belonged, probably, to our Grandfather, Christopher LANCASTER (born in Leighton Buzzard) or his wife Margaret PERYER. They were Quakers, married in the Friends Meeting House, Hammersmith, where Margaret's father Michael was caretaker. They lived in Mimosa Street, Fulham.
The sash is embroidered with the following :

"Rehabits Salford Unity. Past Chief Ruler. Peace and Plenty, the reward of temperance"

Does anyone know what it all means?! When and why did the Quakers give this to someone?  I know my Grandparents didn't drink (except for medicinal purposes ;))..... so I suppose it was some sort of "reward" for this!  What is a Past Chief Ruler?

Does anyone have anything similar?
Many thanks for any information.

Bedfordshire Completed Look ups / Taking the father's name COMPLETED
« on: Monday 30 July 07 08:07 BST (UK)  »
Can anybody help ?  --- In the late 1800s, when a mother brought a child, illegitimate or otherwise, into a marriage, how did they go about giving the child the new father's surname? Did they just "do it" and start calling him by the new name, or was there some sort of legal process, registration? Did the child have to be a certain age? Could he decide on his own to change the name? If there was some sort of registration, are there records somewhere?
Many thanks to anyone who knows the answers! :)

Bedfordshire / Harry JOHNSON son of Elizabeth
« on: Sunday 29 July 07 16:31 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me find more information about Harry JOHNSON, the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Sarah Ann JOHNSON (she was born 1854 in Deanshanger, Northhants, daughter of Emanuel Johnson and Susanna Haile).  I only have him in the 1881 census, aged 7, living in Leighton Buzzard with his mum and step father, Charles LANCASTER.  He was born in London.  Then he disappears! I think the problem is that Harry Johnson is a very common name and I have found loads of them, so it's a bit difficult to decide which one he might be  :-\. He could have died, emigrated.....

His father died in 1887 and his mother went to the workhouse with three of her children (the baby twins were almost definitely illegitimate). Elizabeth and Charles' two other children, both left home - Christopher to London and Rose Lilian to her uncle Levy, still  in Leighton Buzzard. (1891 census)

(Elizabeth later married Edward Jeffs in 1892)

I'd be very grateful if anyone could help me puzzle this out - it's a bit of a needle in a haystack!

Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Elizabeth Sarah Ann JOHNSON 1861 census
« on: Saturday 28 July 07 11:06 BST (UK)  »
Please could somebody help me find Elizabeth Sarah Ann JOHNSON in the 1861 census. She would be aged abt 7.  I have found her in all other censuses.
She was born in 1854 in Deanshanger, Northamptonshire. In 1871, age 17, she is living and working in London as a servant for Bartholomew and Emma Harris.
In 1881 she is married to Charles Lancaster (my Gt Grandfather) and has an illegitimate son Harry (aged 7), and lives in Leighton Buzzard.  She then has a spell in the Leighton Buzzard workhouse (1891 census) -  before marrying again - Edward Jeffs - and going to live in Mentmore, Bucks (1901 census)!
In the lists for the 1861 census, there are a few Elizabeth Johnsons, but my geography of Northamptonshire is not good enough to know whether any of the birth places given could pass for Deanshanger.  Also, I have no idea of her parents' Christian names....or brothers or sisters
I cannot find her death either.........

Many thanks for any help..........
