Armed Forces / 5th Regiment of Bengal Infantry
« on: Tuesday 23 April 13 06:31 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me where I might find service records of a person serving in this infantry in 1860.  (I live in New Zealand so ideally online).

Henry MARNHAM was courtmartialled in Dinapore, India in 1860 for disobedience of orders.  He was transported to Australia with a life sentence.  Arrived Australia 1863 - Ticket of Leave granted 1866 and Pardoned 1872.

The mutiny of the 5th was quite famous and the whole unit was disbanded following this incident and the event widely reported in papers worldwide.

Any help appreciated thank you.

Melanie

Australia / HACKET m MYREN - Tasmania/South Australia
« on: Saturday 02 March 13 09:00 GMT (UK)  »
I need some help please - I have a James HACKET (also HACKETT) marriage to Jane MYREN (also MYREAN and MARION) - date and place unknown.

First found in Tasmania with the birth of William Taylor HACKET in 1844.
Next found on 'Opossum' Tasmania to South Australia 1845 - James, wife and 2 children
Then birth of Caroline 1846 registered in Adelaide, SA

I have all the information after that.  I cannot find the birth of another child before William Taylor in Tasmania - I cannot find James and Jane arriving in Tasmania.  James would have been born circa 1807 according to death records.  Jane circa 1823 also according to death records.  Jane's obit says "a colonist of 63 years" in 1906 so this indicates arrival approx 1843.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated

(Sorry have put this in the wrong place and can't work out how to move it !!)

This is for sale on trademe - would be criminal for it to go to someone outside the family.  Does anyone know connections to this very old Christchurch family??
