The Common Room / What is this object?
« on: Sunday 27 July 08 23:16 BST (UK)  »

I’m hoping someone will be able to tell me what this is.
My Mum gave it to me yesterday.
It has marks on the inside, but I will need a better magnifying glass to read them.

Thanks in advance.

New Zealand Completed Requests / A question for the Cantabs - COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 26 July 08 06:03 BST (UK)  »
…and no, it’s not about Robbie or the Rugby!!
 ;) ;D

I have noticed lots of lookups and replies which mention the “Card Index” at the Ch’ch Library.

Do these records cover all religious denominations for Births, Marriages & Deaths?
What area do they cover?
Is it just Christchurch, or does it cover Canterbury province, or maybe a diocesan area?

Thanks

Bren

Just to explain there are different conditions covering Military Records at Archives Wellington.

Normal records have a “cut off” time every 30 mins throughout the day.
eg. if you put a request in BEFORE 9:30am, the record will be available AFTER 10am.

With Military records they only have 2 retrieval times per day:
before 12:30 which will then be available AFTER 4:30pm that day; and 5pm which will be available after 12:00 the following day.
so it really requires 2 visits as Archives close at 5pm.

update 9 Sep 2008
Military Files now take 15 working days!!!
[/color]

Aug 2009 update:
Military files are now taking approx 3 months.
they process the "paying" requests first, so quicker if you contact them direct....

ALSO, you are only allowed 1 Military record per retrieval time – ie max 2 per day.

ALSO you are only allowed 5 items against your name at any one time.
Ordering a military record effectively means that you are then reduced to 4 normal items at any stage in the system against your name.

There are 3 main stages:
Requested; - self explanatory.
Held out: - record has been found and is available for the borrower.
Issued: - this covers not only records that you are reading, but also records that you have returned, but staff have not entered back onto the system.

So looking up Military records is not straightforward.

Of course if it is urgent, you always have the option of contacting Archives direct.

Hope this explains what might appear at times to be a "lack" of look up offers for Military Records.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Another date please
« on: Tuesday 17 June 08 00:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

This could be the same person as in the 2 photos on this thread, or one of his brothers:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,214610.msg1113930.html#msg1113930

I have posted 2 copies (with and without frame).
The shape and colour of the hat on the table has got me intrigued.

I have a couple of ideas of who and where this photo may have been taken, but won’t say just yet as they may be total red herrings!!

Kind regards
Bren.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Date and advice please.
« on: Tuesday 17 June 08 00:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

This is the same man in the photo on this thread:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,214383.msg1112351.html#msg1112351

I have posted 2 copies of this photo as I am guessing that the frame is original, and will therefore help with dating when it was taken and a guess at his age.
When I took the frame off, there was a sheet of glass on top of the “glass negative”.

I would also like some advice on the best method to clean the surface of the “glass negative” –the white “lumps” on the 2nd photo are dirt, and there is also quite a thick film on the surface.

Your help and suggestions would be appreciated.

Regards
Bren

PS
No restores required until I get the original cleaned.
