South Africa / Boer War monuments/plaques
« on: Monday 02 November 09 23:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have the war record of my Gt Grandfather who fought in the Boer War.  He was a private in the Royal Sussex Regiment and was awarded the South African Medal.  I will be visiting South Africa next February and was hoping to visit some of the sites for which he was awarded bars /clasps for his involvement.

I have sent several Emails to the Boer War Museum in Bloemfontein in an effort to ascertain whether monuments or plaques are erected at any of these sites

Johannesburg clasp
Diamond Hill clasp
Wittebergen clasp
and Cape Colony Bar

But have received no response, has anybody any knowledge whether there is anything to see and exactly where any monument may be sited, if in fact any exist?

Many thanks

Essex / Leytonstone Christening
« on: Tuesday 06 October 09 00:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi everybody

I have located an IGI entry for my Gt Grand Mother Kezia Goldstone who was christened at St John The Baptist Church, Leytonstone, Essex, on 25 March 1838.

I have searched for a few years and have so far failed to find a birth record for her.  Her parents were James Goldstone also born Leytonstone, Essex and Ann Hester born St Clements Dane, Westminster.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Europe / Destroyed German records
« on: Wednesday 30 September 09 02:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi everybody

This is a very sketchy query as I am researching my wife's family after it was deemed too hard by an Aunt.

Is there a site which covers children left in German orphages?

My wifes relatives (twin brothers) have been traced to an orphanage in Germany, I am waiting on information identifying which orphanage.

The Aunt in question visited Germany and was told all the relevant records  were destroyed in the war, which brings any further research to a halt.

Any ideas please.

Tom
I have received information that the relative's name was Gottfriedt Hans Heinrich Christian Tiedemann born 21 Sept 1876 in Lauenburg, Germany.  This is as far back as we get due to the apparent loss of documents due to fire.  Any assistance would be appreciated.

Australia / Passenger list for migrant ships
« on: Monday 03 August 09 02:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi everybody

I have my BIL staying with me at the moment and he asked a question which I am sure one of you could supply the info for.  He arrived in Australia on a migrant ship in Jan 1961 either the Fairstar or Fairsky (unfortunately he is out for the day so I cannot ask him which is correct).  Apparently he had no passport and was only supplied with a travel document, consequently he has no official paperwork which records his entry into Australia and was wondering if passenger lists for these ships were available on line.  This is not for any legal reason as he has had permanent residency for many years he wants it only for interest sake.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Glamorganshire / Thomas Merrells Mayor of Swansea 1915-1916
« on: Saturday 13 June 09 03:51 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find the link between Thomas Arthur Merrells and my Grandmother Alydia, Annie, Maud, Jessie, Merrells.  I don't seem to be able to find Thomas in the census details of Wales, I don't know the name of his wife which makes things somewhat more difficult but have a list of his children.  He had three sons Ernest, Sidney and Harold and three daughters one who was reported as married at his death in 1922 aged 54, the family was living at Milton Terrace.

He was born in Swansea  in the neighbourhood of Dyfatty Street, he had a brother Edwin Merrells,  and the daughter married a Mr Trevor C. Evans both were listed as mourners.

His eldest son Ernest, became Lord Mayor of Cardiff in 1970, after moving from Cardiff in 1935, he died aged 96 on 16 Nov 1987.

I have obtained a great deal of information from both the Cardiff and Swansea Libraries but none identify his wife by name and as I say I have found it difficult to find census entries for the family due to my poor geographical knowledge of Wales, so any help would really be appreciated.

London and Middlesex / Anne Maria Chalner Pearse
« on: Wednesday 11 March 09 00:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everybody,

I have a little story which provides a challenge.

The story goes Anne was the product of a Duke and another ones Duchess the only children from both families.  She was sent to Scotland for schooling before returning south to England.

In 1871 she is in Finsbury aged 27
In 1881 she is in Southwark aged 37
In 1891 and 1901 she is in Bermondsey aged 47 and 57.  On 1871 census surname misspelt Dowset and in 1881 it is misspelt Dorositt

She married James Thomas Dowsett on 18 April 1864 in St Giles and from her marriage certificate her fathers name is given as John Joseph Chalner Pearse and her Mother Anne.

By 1881 she is living with George Dowsett, James brother

She died on 2 Aug 1904 and was born around 1843-44

The challenge is, I am unable to find any birth details of Anne, her birth place is consistent on every census as London, Middlesex, or any record of her in Scotland, could somebody possibly help please.

Australia / Dowsetts Marsh, Tasmania
« on: Tuesday 17 February 09 11:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

A bit of a curly one I'm afraid.  Florence Alma Beswick married Harry Dowsett in Beaconsfield Tasmania.  I have all the family covered but received information today that there is or was an area north of Gladstone, Tasmania in the old Parish of Truganini known as Dowsetts Marsh.  Would anybody have any information that could pinpoint Dowsetts Marsh or even better how it became known as Dowsetts Marsh.

The Beswick family home was in Derby, Tasmania and Dowsetts Marsh may have a family connection, here's hoping.

« on: Tuesday 17 February 09 10:44 GMT (UK)  »
Could SKS please date these this picture please.  I believe they are husband and wife and could well be relatives of mine, dating of the pictures could very well go towards proving the point.  If possible could you make a stab at there social standing based on the clothing.

Many Thanks
