Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Epsom mental hospitals - now answered
« on: Friday 23 January 09 14:51 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone advise me of the registration district which covered the London County Council mental hospitals at Epsom? Although Epsom and later Surrey Mid-Eastern seem likely, the hospitals were in the community of Horton, which might be in another district. Does anyone know for sure? Thanks for any information.

Census and Resource Discussion / UK electoral roll sites
« on: Friday 23 January 09 10:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hopefully this does not contravene the board rules, but can anyone recommend a web site for a one-off UK electoral roll search? I would prefer to pay a one-off fee and not get locked into a subscription. The name I am searching for is unusual, so hopefully I should be able to accomplish this task fairly easily (I have already Googled the name just in case there was already a reference outside the rolls). Thanks for any tips shared.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / SPICER baptism Eversley/Heckfield
« on: Monday 14 April 08 15:53 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to pin down the parentage of my direct ancestor James Spicer, born c1808 in Bramshill (Eversley parish). Suspect number one to be his father is Joseph Spicer, born c1766, who lived in Eversley parish. Does anyone have access to baptism records for Eversley and/or neighbouring Heckfield to help me pin this one down? Thanks in advance for any help,
Waterhouse

Sussex Lookup Requests / Marriage VINALL & WATERHOUSE, Wadhurst
« on: Thursday 20 March 08 18:34 GMT (UK)  »
John Vinall married Mary Waterhouse in Wadhurst on 11 Aug 1824. If anyone has or had sight of the original record, I'd be most grateful for any additional details - witnesses, other names mentioned, addresses etc. My probem is trying to define Mary's parentage and age. I'd be pleased to hear from anyone researching the Vinall family, too.
Many thanks for any assistance.

Oxfordshire / A mariner from Great Tew?
« on: Wednesday 13 February 08 20:10 GMT (UK)  »
My ancestor Thomas Wilkinson was master mariner who declared on the 1861 census that he was born in Great Tew, around 1781. By occupation he was a master mariner, as were his two sons, born in Deptford, by the Thames in Kent. A professional search of the mercantile marine records at the National Archive has found no trace of Thomas. Nor has any record of his birth yet been found in the records for Great Tew or neighbouring parishes.

Can any Oxford folk help me track down his origins? From at least 1819 he was living in Deptford, then later in East London. On the 1851 census, his place of birth was stated as Oxfordshire; in 1841 he was marked as not born in Middlesex. His wife, Ellen, died at a time unknown between 1823 and the date of the 1841 census. I have not yet found his death certificate, either.

Thanks for any constructive suggestions.

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / A Cheesman conundrum - completed
« on: Monday 05 November 07 11:29 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find a link between my 3x great grandfather Stapleton CHEESEMAN (sometimes Cheesman, c1787-1870), of Throwley, and Daniel Cheesman of Sittingbourne (c1765-1849) - I believe they may be brothers, but purely on circumstantial evidence so far.
On census returns Stapleton gave his place of birth as Boughton Aluph, but he does not appear on the baptismal register.
Daniel was married in Bapchild in 1789, to Ann Marden. Registers reveal seven children, including a Stapleton (a very rare Christian name), baptised in 1800 in Sittingbourne. Research in the registers for Sittngbourne and surrounding parishes has not yielded details of Daniel's baptism.
I have found nothing to link "my" Stapleton specifically with the Sittingbourne area, although it's only a few miles distant. Two Stapelton Cheesemans must be more than coincidence, though.
Are there any Cheesman/Cheeseman reserachers out there who have come across these men?
Thanks for any help or advice.

Somerset / PORCH family of Wellow
« on: Saturday 03 November 07 08:03 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have any information on the Porch family of Wellow? Harriet Porch married Henry Blackford (sometimes Blatchford) in the village in 1825 and I am trying to build links with other Porch folk in the parish - there are a couple of dozen listed in 1841.
Thanks for any help.

Somerset Lookup Requests / Timsbury look-ups
« on: Friday 02 November 07 18:26 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have easy access to Timsbury registers? I am working on a friend's tree as a present and am looking for bapismal records and parental details of James BRIDGES, born c1802; Amey (sic) COLLINGS and Joseph EVANS, born c1775 (give or take five years); and Mary Evans, born c1803. I have the BAFHS CD that includes local marriages around that time, but cannot make a definitive link between James Bridges and his parents.
Thanks in anticipation of any assistance.

Somerset / What became of Catherine BAILEY of Bath?
« on: Tuesday 30 October 07 16:33 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone please give some advice on the brick wall I have hit with my 3x great-grandmother Catherine Bailey, of Bath?

She was born Catherine Hayward, c1806 and married first John Densem in 1821. As a widow she married secondly Samuel Bailey, in 1843. Together they kept the refuge for destitute travellers on Bath's Abbey Green, until Samuel hanged himself there in 1870. The newspaper report of the time refers to Catherine having found his body. After that - no trace. Her children are listed in subsequent census returns, but there is no sign of Catherine. I have checked marriage and death registers using her maiden, married and second married name to no avail. The only slight clue is that two of her Densem grandchildren emigrated to Canada. However, Catherine does not appear on any Canadian census returns, either.
Someone, somewhere must have a clue.....
