Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Shorwell - ARTIS
« on: Sunday 13 February 11 19:00 GMT (UK)  »
Trying to trace the background for this couple - William and Hannah ARTIS.

There is a single baptism recorded 08 June 1817 in Shorwell, Hampshire of a daughter (Mary ARTIS).

Would this be IOW? And is there any way of finding William or Hannah's origins - cannot trace marriage or baptism record.

Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / Place of birth - SCARFF / ARTIS - COMPLETED
« on: Sunday 13 February 11 18:48 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for birthplace of following couple:

James Scarff (or Scarfe / Scarf) and Mary Ann ARTIS (Artess). They were married in Thorndon 17 April 1835, but later baptisms show that they probably settled in Hunston.

Parish records say "OTP" but suspect they were not - perhaps 1851 census or after has more information?

Cambridgeshire Completed Lookups / Local newspaper look up Sawston COMPLETED
« on: Sunday 30 January 11 19:10 GMT (UK)  »
Is anyone aware of a newspaper covering the Sawston area around 1900 (or would it come under Cambridge?) and would such a paper carry details of local coroner's inquests?

I am trying to find information on the death of a relative around this time, which was subject to a coroners report. (It appears that the original documentation was not kept beyond the statutory period).

Are copies available at the local records office?

Grateful for any assistance.

World War One / Napsbury hospital and series MH 106
« on: Wednesday 01 December 10 13:20 GMT (UK)  »
I have been trying to find information on my g.grandfather (Albert Artes) for some time. Family "legend" states that he was hospitalised in Napsbury hospital (near St. Albans) during / after WW1.

Unfortunately no service or pension record exists for him, and the medal index card gives only bare details of rank (private) and number (A/362763) in ASC.

I have found the series MH106 - Medical Records of Servicemen listed in the National Archive catalogue, however it states that the records are only a "representative selection".

Has anyone seen these records and if so what do they contain? Is it strange that no pension record is available if he was hospitalised during or shortly after the war?

Am trying to trace a marriage c1695-6 for Thomas ARTIS (wife's name Elizabeth).

Their first child was baptised October 1696 in Alverstoke, so am guessing this parish for a marriage.

Thanks

Trying to trace the burial of Thomas ARTIS in Portsmouth (late 1720s?) or any of his wifes / children.

He appears to have married 3 times - Elizabeth(c1695), Ruth (1701) and Anne (1704).

Two children were baptised in Gosport - Martha (1696) and Mary (1700) - and seven in Portsmouth between 1705 and 1725.

many thanks

I am trying to trace a baptism for a Joshua ARTIS (born c1729).

He was married in Newhaven (in 1763) and his first child was baptised in Chichester (1764).

I think he may be related to one of the Thomas Artis listed in IGI in the Alverstoke / Gosport and Portsmouth areas around 1700, but the IGI does not list any baptisms in the relevant parishes after 1725.

I expect the record to be listed at Holy Trinity (Gosport) or St Thomas (Portsmouth) .... although it seems that one set of parents (Thomas Artis=Anne Lockyer) had their children baptised at both St Thomas AND the High Street (Presbyterean) church in Portsmouth.

If anyone is in Manchester Archive library could you please get me a copy of the following baptism:

Thomas ARTIS 16 August 1767 son of Joshua Artis and Sarah

I have phoned the library but evidently they do not supply copies by post for pre-1813 baptisms (!)

many thanks
