Cornwall / records for deaths at sea
« on: Tuesday 09 October 12 22:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi All ;)
Just wondering if anyones knows if your husband possibly died at sea 1809ish and you remarried would you need proof of Death from the church to enable you to remarry? also did the Church keep a record of deaths at sea of people from their parish even if there was no body to Bury? And finnally anyone know if Churches kept a record of those who died at sea so i could hopefully contact the church in Newlyn to see if theres any record for one of my relatives who posswibly did die at sea?
Many thanks

The Common Room / Died at Sea Please Help!!
« on: Tuesday 09 October 12 19:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi All ;)
Heres a question that im hoping someone may be able to help m e on im plain out of ideas!
If one of your relatives is more then likely to of died at sea is there anyway of finding any info on it ie church records etc?
My 5xGrt Grandfather married in Newlyn Cornwall England in 1805 or 7?he was a sailor or mariner, between 1807 and 1809 he had a son and Daughter, in 1812 his wife remarried as a widower his son mentions him in his wedding cert saying Dennis McDonald sailor so im assuming he was lost at sea between 1809 and 1812 in either the Irish sea or Atlantic?to remarry wouldnt his wife of needed proof of death and would there of been a service for him and others who may of also been lost?would there be a list of shipwrecks from that time and area and persons missing list be available to see from that area?this is my only hope of finding anymore info on my 5x grt Grandfather as ive no baptism or birth for him or Death only Wedding Banns and his kids baptisms so as you can imagine he is and has for years been a nightmare to trace! Sorry for all the questions by the way!
kind regards

Roscommon / Owen and Margaret McDonald(McDonnell)
« on: Monday 10 September 12 10:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi all ive jusr receaved my 6x Great Grandfathers Army record and im wondering if anyone may have come across this McDonald also may of gone by the surname McDonnell family from Drum Roscommon?
Bit of a big ask as ive been told there arent any records going back this far im just wondering if any of his extended family may crop up later in other records?Going roughly by Census records im geussing he was born in Roscommon around 1760s?

His name was Owen McDonald he died on the Isles of Scilly off of Cornwall aged 87 in 1842 on the 1841 census record for there it has him and his wife both from Ireland no marriage record for them in Cornwall so i geuss they were married in Ireland he served in the Army from 1779 till 1814 he must of settled in Isles of Scilly or been on leave a little before then as  as his kids were born there
Barney McDonald 1809
John McDonald 1811
Edward McDonald 1814
Catherine McDonald 1816
Im pretty sure Owen had a son or Brother called Denis also

Apart from knowing they came originally from Roscommon and alot of the family settled in South Cornwall and were all nearly mariners i dont have much more to go so im just posting in the hope someones come across a McDonald/McDonnell family from Drum Roscommon around this time that may link up?
The names throughout seem to remain the same in later life such as     Catherine,John,William,Nancy,Margaret etc if thats any help?
Any links thought clues or info that may be of the tiniest help would be really appreciated
 Many Thanks

Ireland / Army pensioner
« on: Saturday 30 June 12 10:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi all just this week discovered some more of my Ancestors this time on the Isles of Scilly the 1841 census reads
Owen McDonald 80 army pensioner Ireland
his wife aged 65 was also from Ireland
So far ive found that going back my 5x Great Grandfather and his parents and siblings were all Baptised Roman Catholic in Dublin im just curious was it practice back then(i.e judging by Owens age 1760s onwards for the British Army to press gang Roman Catholic Irish or would Owen of been in a Irish Army regiment?
Thanks
