Renfrewshire / Joseph Langs Land
« on: Saturday 10 December 16 22:52 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking at an 1861 census which possibly belongs to an my ancestor Daniel Docherty. Born in Renfrewshire, his address is given as "Joseph Langs Land". Does anyone have any more info on this place? Any ideas?

If it turns out to be my ancestor Daniel, his son marries into the Laing family, not sure if that's just a coincidence or whether it could be relevant.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Richard Lingard c1620
« on: Sunday 23 October 16 16:41 BST (UK)  »
Ive had great success in tracing my Lingard ancestry to the small village of Gargrave. The earliest Lingard I can definitely link to my family is Thomas Lingard who is buried on the 14th of April 1720. I think I have his birth, being baptised on the 28th Dec 1642, in Kirkby Malham, born to Richard Lingard.

If I'm right, Richard Lingard marries Margaret Mason in 1641, Gargrave. The problem being that I cannot find any siblings for Thomas, or a birth record for Richard. Seems strange that I can't find any of Thomas siblings, knowing how many kids the average family had in the 17th century.

There are Lingards in Kildwick, which is only about 6km from Gargrave as the crow flies, that seems to be the only nearby place that is home to any Lingards.

Can anyone help me establish a link between Richard and the preceding generation of Lingards and/ or find some siblings for Thomas  :)

Thanks for reading

Family History Beginners Board / Wedding Cert for JJH Lingard and Mary Eliz Tate
« on: Monday 17 October 16 20:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I can only find the marriage Banns of the following wedding...

John James Hood Lingard to Mary Elizabeth Tate, 20th Oct 1822. St James, Clerkenwell.

Is there anyway I can find the actual marriage certificate? Or if there even is one for this wedding? The Banns themselves are not as helpful as I would have liked.

Cheers

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Any info at all regarding 3 Victoria Road
« on: Thursday 13 October 16 12:32 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for as much info on a particular address as I can get. Ultimately, I'm interested in finding out how long a particular person would have been staying at this address. 3 Victoria Road Birkenhead. I know he was there in 1928, but that's all I know.

The more I know about this address, the more I can rule out. Pretty much ANY info would be of help

Any help or ideas?

Thanks for having a look

Cheshire / Help with Davies in Birkenhead
« on: Wednesday 12 October 16 18:46 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to locate my Great Grandfather Samuel William Davies' ancestors and had a quick question. I know from my grandads birth record, Samuel William Davies was living at 3 Victoria Road, Birkenhead in 1928 (both the county and sub district).

I recently found a Beatrice and Elias Davies living at number 3 Victoria Road Poulton cum Seacombe, Birkenhead in 1881.

Could there be a connection there or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Cheshire / Which Victoria Road?
« on: Monday 10 October 16 17:50 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to trace my great grand father Samuel William Davies. My grandfather never knew much about him and has himself now passed away. I have only been able to find two instances of his being mentioned, once on my grandfathers marriage certificate and once on his birth certificate.

The birth of my grandfather (Samuels son) is registered in Birkenhead. His address is given as 3 Victoria Road.

I have found 5 Victoria Roads spread throughout Liverpool and two in Birkenhead (one has now been renamed to Victoria Mount).

The only "leads" I have are that a family of Davies' owned the Railway Hotel (in Victoria Road, Wallasey) around 1860, to my knowledge, none of the male children had heirs. The second is that a Mr Edward Davies lived at 3 Victoria Road in west Derby (around 5 miles east of birkenhead) in 1870.

Here is the scant information I have...

***Edit:Any ideas about how I could trace Samuels Parents?***

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Another Lingard Mystery
« on: Wednesday 07 September 16 14:07 BST (UK)  »
I have a new mystery, same family as my last post, the Lingards. (For those who saw it, this is Thomas son Christopher).

Christopher was born in Gargrave (Baptised 20th sept 1685). He has all but one of his children with an Isabel (Maiden name unknown). I can't find any sort of a mention for any Christopher Lingard marrying an Isabel anything.

His first two sons are both baptised on the same day, they being Thomas + James on the 28th July 1714, both sons are listed as being the Children of Christopher and Elizabeth Lingard.

James dies on the 2nd of Aug 1714 and is listed as the child of Christopher and Elizabeth Lingard. However, when Thomas dies 1st March 1715 this time he is listed as the son of Christopher and Isabel Lingard.

All subsequent children are of Chris and Isabel. So I reckon the marriage must have taken place somewhere between 2nd Aug 1714 and 1st March 1715

Anyone able to help at all? This ones been bothering me for a while.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Linger or Lingard
« on: Tuesday 06 September 16 21:50 BST (UK)  »
I wanted to run something passed you guys to see what you think. I am looking for a marriage between my great grandfather Thomas Lingard and an Elizabeth (Surname unknown). He lived in Gargrave for most of his life and died in "Coldiker" which I now know to be Cold Acre. I believe he owned a farm in the Kirkby Malham area which I'm guessing was called Cold Acre.

Anyway, he was born Circa 1650 and had his first Child in February of 1671. I can find absolutely no applicable Marriages at all, except one. It takes place 16 days after the birth of his first Child. It is between an Elizabeth Preston and a Thomas "Linger".

Elizabeth is listed as living at Kirkby Malham and Thomas (Linger) is listed as being from Gargrave. Now, I have a copy of the registers for Gargrave and there is absolutely no mention of a Linger. Not one. In fact, I can find mention of only 5 Lingers in the whole of Yorkshire, 40 years either side of my Thomas Lingards birth (using popular genealogy websites).

Does everyone think I'm ok to assume this is actually my Thomas Lingard and not Thomas Linger or am I being a bit hasty?

There's also one more piece of the jigsaw, in my copy of the gargrave registers, Thomas's first child is just mentioned as being the Son of Thomas Lingard (no mention of a wife) while every one of his other children, born later, mention a wife (Elizabeth). This could support the theory that the wedding took place after this first childs birth?

Lancashire / Hannah Gartside
« on: Sunday 28 August 16 17:52 BST (UK)  »
Looking for a Hannah Gartside born abt 1840 in Oldham. All I know about her is that she marries William Knapton in 1859 (she is listed as 19 yrs old and her father is a Willower by the name of John). I have her in the 61,71 & 81 Censuses but cant find her in the 51 or the 41.

The earliest known whereabouts for her are in the 61 census, she is living on "Moor Hey Street". By this stage she is Hannah Knapton of course.

Can anyone help?
