London and Middlesex / Is this a bit of bigamy?
« on: Thursday 17 May 07 05:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi from Brisbane, Australia

I have a little mystery that I just can't seem to solve.  This is the background.

My late husbands g great grandfather was William Henry Douglas Cooke, who died by his own hand in 1913, aged 80 in Sydney.

It would seem from his death certificate that he came to Australia about 1871, aged about 37, and formed a relationship with Catherine Matilda McMinn in Tasmania, and they moved to Sydney, NSW.  They had at least 6 children but did not register them.  The children are shown on Catherine's death certificate, but not on his.

I have a 1858  marriage certificate (St George the Maytyr Southwark) for William Henry Douglas Cooke, Gentleman, father Thomas Southall Cooke, Gentleman, and Maria Mary Percival, father James Percival, Gentleman.  By the 1861 Census Maria is living with her father and family, and has a 1 yr old daughter, Edith E. (Maria is shown as Mary Cook on the census)
I have tracked her through the other census to her death, and William Henry does not appear again.  Maria gives her marriage condition as either Married, or Jud Separated.

Now the real mystery is the birth of a child in 1865 registereed St Margaret Westminister, called Thomas William Henry Douglas Cooke.  Bit had to ignore the name!  Mother Eliza Isabel Cooke formerly Bell, father William Henry Douglas Cooke, confectioner.

I am satisfied that the Cooke/Percival marriage relates to our William Henry as his youngest son was called John Edward Southall Cooke.

I cannot find a second marriage for William, and I cannot find any census record for them in 1871.

I also cannot find Thomas Southall Cooke, except for what looks like it could be a 2nd marriage, and his death.  The Times Marriage notice said only son of Thomas Southall Cooke of Luston, Herefordshire, but I have been unable to locate him on any census.

Are there 2 William Henry Douglas Cookes, or just one ladykiller?

Australia / Where were they born!
« on: Monday 09 April 07 07:18 BST (UK)  »
I have not been able to identify the birthplace of the children of this couple:

William Henry Douglas Cooke and Catherine Matilda McMinn.

They met in Tasmania.  His death certificate gives his place of birth as Hereford, England, that he died at 81, and had spent 2 years in Tasmania and 42 years in NSW.  I don't think they ever married, and I have found a possible earlier marriage for him in England.

The children are:
Constance b. abt 1872
Isabel I b abt 1878
William Harold b abt 1880
Carmelita b abt 1881
John Edward b abt1885

William Harold gives his birth place as Sydney at marriage (in Hobart) and on his death certificate.  I have found their marriages and deaths in NSW but have not been able to find the births as Cooke, Cook or McMinn.

Catherine eventually left William and retuirned to Hobart, and William Harold met his wife there while visiting his mother.

Anyone got any ideas?

Australia / Victorian lookup - births for Cook
« on: Wednesday 21 March 07 00:34 GMT (UK)  »
Thomas Henry Cook married Mary Ann Heeds in NSW in 1844.  I have found the record for one child born in NSW, William, probably William Henry.

I have no evidence that they were in Victoria but they married near Wagga Wagga (Tarcutta),and it is possible they went south into Victoria.  I would appreciate if someone could look up any other possible births for this couple who are proving to be most elusive.

Australia / Tasmania Lookup - births Cook
« on: Wednesday 21 March 07 00:01 GMT (UK)  »
Thomas Henry Cook married Mary Ann Heeds in NSW in 1844.  Their son William Henry was born in NSW in 1843, but no other children.

As I know William Henry had been in Tasmania, I wonder whether that is where other children of this couple might have been born.

With thanks

Australia / American Yard
« on: Thursday 15 February 07 21:00 GMT (UK)  »
I have just received a marriage certificate for Thomas Cook and Mary Ann Heeds.  They were married by License with consent of friends, place was given as American Yard.

The Parish was Yass, County Murray, year 1844, C of E Marriage, conducted by William Lisle.

Witnesses were also both from American Yard.

What was the American Yard?  I have not been able to find any reference to it.

Don't you just love it when a certificate poses more questions than answers! ???

Australia / Tasmanian births look up
« on: Tuesday 06 February 07 00:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

Would someone be so kind as to look up whether any children were born to this couple in Tasmania.  They were married in 1844 and there had been a child born in 1843.  That child was William Henry Cook(e) who married (?) Catherine Matilda McMinn in Tasmania.

No more  children were born in NSW that I can see.

The couple are Thomas Henry Cook and Mary A Heeds.  There does not seem to be any record of their deaths in NSW either.

Thanks :)

Australia / Qld birth /marriage lookup - Russell family
« on: Saturday 20 January 07 05:15 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace Martin William Russell and his father and mother.  I have his death certificate which states he was born in Cook Town Queenstown.  I know he lived in Western Australia, and married Ethel Busch there.  His DOB is, I believe 8/7/1877.

He died in NSW in 1954 during a visit to Sydney.  His mother on the DC is Ellen Mary - , and his father William Russell.

I have no idea of where his parents came from, whether they were married in Queensland, or emigrated (or transported for that matter).

Any help would be appreciated.

Staffordshire / Horobin family tragedy
« on: Thursday 04 January 07 21:04 GMT (UK)  »
During a posting for a Staffordshire look up for the marriage of Samuel Cartwright and Martha Horobin a researcher found a free BMD record of 1881 deaths of  Elizabeth 42 yrs, Harriet 11 yrs and Rachel 9 yrs. in Wolverhampton June Quarter.  Deaths are registered as Horobin.

They show up in the 1881 census as being all together, though the name is transcribed (or written) in the census as Robbins.  The deaths, I believe could be my g grandmother's mother and sisters.

Does anyone know when the census was taken, was it before the June quarter?

Is there anyway of finding out why a mother and two daughters die either at the same time, or close to each other.

Thanks

Annette

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Cartwright/Horabin marriage
« on: Wednesday 03 January 07 01:13 GMT (UK)  »
I have been unable to find the marriage for Samuel Cartwright b. abt 1860 in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, and Martha Horabin (or Horobin) b. 1862, Bilston Staffordshire.

I think have them in the 1901 census but after that they eventually followed their sons John and Herbert to Australia, but there were some other children, but I think that the girls were older and had probably left home, and there another child born in 1901.

I would like to find Martha's parents.

Any help appreciated.

Annette  :)
