Armed Forces / Royal Navy - 1911 Census Entry advice (not look-up)
« on: Monday 21 June 10 22:50 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

In the 1911 census, my Grandad's brother is listed as a 25 year old AB on board HMS T.B.12, at Sheppey, Kent, in the sub-District of Minster.

According to his service record he left the St George on 31.3.1911 after a 3 month stint and transferred to the Acteon the next day, and remained on it until 20.1.1914 without a break, or so it would seem. I believe his shore leave was listed as Pembroke, then Pembroke I (He was in clink for 14 days on one occasion  :o )

Can anyone help with an explanation of T.B.12 in the 1911 please. My guess is that it is the class of ship (Torpedo Boat?) but I am a novice at RN matters.

Thanks,
Colin

Durham Lookup Requests / !861 census look-up, Sarah Hodgen
« on: Monday 14 June 10 01:34 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

If anyone can help to untangle a long standing problem, I'd appreciate your help.

In my Hodgson family there is Robert born c1828, and in the 1851 census I'm fairly sure he is shown as married to Hanah, who is actually Sarah but mistranscribed by the enumerator.

Everything points to him as marrying Sarah Hepplewhite in 1848 but in 1879 he marries in New Zealand claiming to be a bachelor.

In the 1861 census I have found on an Ancestry search that there is a Sarah Hodgen aged 32 with 11 year old William and 7 year old Benjamin, at Wingate.

Could anyone please provide the details of this family, and perhaps find any of them after this?

Regards,
Colin

2nd attempt  >:(

Trying to find a suitable birthday present is always difficult, but for a 96 year old it is even more difficult.  :-\

Thanks to RC and the fantastic restorers I think we came up trumps  ;D ;D ;D

She loved to see the old photos without having to turn pages, and probably didn't realise that they were so much better than the originals. A digital photoframe was a perfect gift, so many thanks to you all.

If anyone remembers the old days of TV (in the UK), they could only broadcast for a limited number of hours and used to end broadcasting with the National Anthem and a picture of Queen Elizabeth. Whenever that came on, my kids used to shout "Look Dad, there's Nana with a hat on".

I think my Mam is a bit more glamorous, but I'm very biased, so you can make your own minds up with this picture from a couple of years ago.

The Common Room / Update on Privatisation Warning
« on: Saturday 05 June 10 00:20 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

Unfortunately my original post was locked by the mods because some posters had diversified into other well-worn areas, so I've started a new one to let you know the outcome.

Initially I issued a warning that when searching Public Member Trees on Ancestry, a death of an infant reveals the names of the parents even though the parents details were privatised and they are still living.

After a bit of battling, and over a month from my last email to them, I have just received a reply which contains this statement - In response to your request, we have removed the URL requested from our databases so that the parents’ names are private.

It seems to have done the trick  ;D ;D ;D

Mant thanks to those who offered support,
Colin

This is my family before my time, my parents and older brother and sister. Could it be tidied up a little with the studio stamp removed? Any sympathetic restoration and perhaps re-colouring would be very much appreciated. It is one more for my mother's 96th and it is now getting very near (June 5th).

Many Thanks,
Colin

Durham Lookup Requests / GRO Index 1876
« on: Tuesday 11 May 10 19:18 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

Can anyone put me out of my misery?

I am trying to help a friend track down a mystery man who suddenly appears with his wife in the 1901 census, born c1876 Oxhill, Durham (Kyo). I haven't found a birth registration through FreeBMD or through the Durham CC Registrations, but I have received a copy of his birth cert. ???

I've noticed on FreeBMD that none of the entries have the option to view the original pages, so I wonder if anyone with alternative access might confirm an entry, and possibly explain why it wasn't transcribed with the rest of that quarter.

He is Adam Thornton, registered 2nd quarter 1876, Lanchester District, sub-district Tanfield.

Many Thanks,
Colin

Armed Forces / 5th V.B. Durham Light Infantry c1894

My Gt Granddad was a clerk for the NER Railway Company, and from the latest additions to the 19th Century British Newspaper collections, I have found that he played cricket for his village team and also other teams when he moved home. He also entered his caged birds (crested canaries) in various shows throughout the area.

I was delighted to find such unknown details about him, and then came the completely unexpected entry on July 17th 1894. Bisley Shooting (presumably a list of winners) which included 5th V.B. DLI Quartermaster Sergeant J. Cruddace, Gateshead.

As far as I've been able to find out, he was the only J. Cruddace in the area at that time. What would be the chances of him going through life with no mention of him being with the DLI, if it was him?

Any advice or opinions would be appreciated.

Regards,
Colin

The Common Room / Privatisation - WARNING
« on: Thursday 22 April 10 02:49 BST (UK)  »
I have done a lot of research on my family tree and don't see any need to publish it on a commercial site, but I willingly share my tree on the understanding that details of living people are not disclosed.

I am not particularly sensitive about privacy but someone has obviously used this information and posted their tree on a well known site and duly privatised it.

The unfortunate result is that my son's first child sadly died of complications from birth and his details are then deemed as not a living person, and my son and his wife are shown as his parents.

I tried to send them an email, but it was so complicated to do it the right way, because I am not a subscriber, but I do have a username and login for them. They didn't recognise my email address (don't know why) so the message was sent in my new name of "Sod It"

I am disgusted but would like to warn others about what they post, or what they share.

Regards,
Colin

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Two ladies in search of TLC

You did such a wonderful job with my Dad and his older sister, so I'm hoping you could do the same for my Mam and her older sister. Sadly, both of the older sisters died aged 17 and 19 respectively.

In a few weeks, my Mam will be 96 and I thought that a digital photo frame loaded with her old photos, and many restored ones, would be an ideal present. Would there be a problem with the copyright thingy :-\

EDIT - sorry, should have been more specific. A tidy and a splash of colour would be really appreciated

Thanks,
Colin
