Waterford / Townland map & missing records for parish of Lismore
« on: Tuesday 07 June 16 03:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Would anyone know of an online townland map for the catholic/protestant parish of Lismore.  Having done almost exclusively protestant Irish research I am now trying to get my head around the way the catholic records are recorded.
Also the NLI are missing the microfilm of the baptisms in Lismore from Feb 1831 to Jul 1840.  Would anyone know where they would be accessible?  RootsIreland have them transcribed so they do exist but I need to check a couple of their transcriptions.
Many thanks

Glamorganshire / Why did they move from Swansea to Scotland?
« on: Saturday 28 May 16 09:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Patrick Riley died in Swansea in 1894.  His daughter Bridget married Jeremiah Ormonde (born in Ireland) in 1897 and their first child was born in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland in 1898.  Bridget's mother Hanora Riley and her children also moved to Kirkcaldy (found them in the 1901 census but not sure when they actually moved).

Would anyone know why the two families would have moved to Scotland in the late 1890s?  Was there a downturn in employment in Glamorgan at that time?  It seems a long way to go and if they did want to move I would have thought they might have gone to Glasgow or around that area where there would have been work in the mines and shipyards.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Would anyone know of a researcher who will do searches at the old Land Titles Office in Sydney, NSW?   The lady I used a few years ago no longer does it.

Donegal / Help needed to find death certificate for Matthew PATTERSON
« on: Sunday 12 April 15 02:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I hope someone can help me find a death certificate for Matthew PATTERSON who died according to the PRONI wills database on 8 August 1884 being of Ballybogan, Clonleigh, Donegal.

I have searched the new Irish BDM index on irishgenealogy.ie but can’t find him under various spellings.  I have also searched the GRONI without a result.  I particularly want to find his age at his death.

Does anyone have any advice on why I can’t find him?

Many thanks

Armed Forces / What is right & left wing in a regiment 1860s
« on: Thursday 06 March 14 03:42 GMT (UK)  »
Could someone explain what the "right wing" & "left wing" of a regiment meant in the 1860s please.  I've come across a few newspaper clippings in which the term is used eg "The Right Wing of HM 73rd Regiment left for Ceylon on the morning..."

Many thanks

Armed Forces / 73rd Regiment of Foot 1865-1875
« on: Monday 27 January 14 07:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have found a reference to a Hugh PARKER on Findmypast in their British Army Service Records 1760-1915.  This is a page from the Chelsea Pensioners' Discharge Documents 1760-1887 for the 73rd Regiment. I do not know if this is my ancestor so I need to find his age/year of birth and his birthplace among the army records to make the connection.

This Hugh PARKER was discharged from the 73rd Regiment on 20 Jan 1875.  There is a number in the first column of the page (possibly his regimental number?) that looks like 1566.  The cause of discharge was "1st period of limited service".  The amount of service was 10 yrs 155 days and the next column states 10 yrs 191 days.  The column "Documents with list to W.G. at Chelsea" has 149 against his name.

I employed a researcher at Kew to see what he could find but all I received was a short email saying "unfortunately there are no other documents available for you."  Would anyone be able to advise me if there is anywhere else I can look for records of this serviceman please?

Many thanks

Other Countries / Cockpit Hotel Singapore photo wanted
« on: Saturday 18 January 14 09:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I stayed at the Cockpit Hotel in Singapore for a few nights with my mother in 1970. I remember it as being a lovely old wooden building with lots of greenery and I think it was painted a light green colour. I have tried to find a photo of it online but have not been successful. Would anyone have a photo of it or would anyone know where there is a photo of it online please? I have tried the Singapore Library without success.  There are many photos online of a modern Cockpit Hotel in singapore but this is not the one I stayed at.  I believe the Hotel I remember was demolished in the 1970s. I do hope someone can help me to rekindle my memories of it so I can add it to my family history story.
Thanks

Armed Forces / Hugh Parker, Royal Highlanders 42nd Foot and 73rd Regiment of Foot.

Hi
I hope someone can point me in the right direction to find information on the military service of Hugh Parker born 1842 Kilmarnock, Scotland.  There is on Findmypast - "British Army Service Records 1760-1915" an entry for a Hugh Parker of the above regiment.  It states that he was discharged on 20 Jan 1875 and the cause was "1st period of limited service".  He had just over 10 years service.  Could someone tell me where can I look now to find any more information on this soldier?
Many thanks
