The Common Room / school registers?
« on: Saturday 28 May 05 15:59 BST (UK)  »
I read on the Met. Archives site that they hold a number of school registers.  Does anyone know what information these hold and whether there's anywhere to look up which schools were in a particular area in a particular year.

World War Two / Canadian Newspaper Archives?
« on: Saturday 14 May 05 18:23 BST (UK)  »
I'm not sure if I'm posting this on the correct board, apologies if it's the wrong one.
My husband's uncle, Wallace Richards, died in Canada in 1941 while test diving a Harvard aircraft - thanks to Kenhar I have managed to get a photo of the plane he was testing.
My husbands family all remember their grandmother having photos of the funeral possession/service and a newspaper cutting which had been sent to her from Canada at the time, but no one knows where they are now.
I found his details on CWGC site and from this I managed to get details of the actual accident from the Airforce Assoc. of Canada.  They also told me that the RCAF ceased to exist in 1968 and that most of it's records were moved to the Nat. Archives of Canada and that photographs previously held at Rockcliffe Photo Unit were also moved, but they didn't know where.
I contacted the archives, and the lady was very helpful, giving me their opening times etc. so I can search the newspapers of the time, but as I live in London, England it's not so easy to visit.
Does anyone know of any sites where I can try and find the newspaper report or any photos previously held at Rockcliffe that is searchable online?

The Common Room / What else have I missed?
« on: Thursday 12 May 05 20:45 BST (UK)  »
My parents married on my father's 21st birthday on 20.9.1941 at St. Luke's Church Camberwell.
I remember, just before my marriage, my mother talking of her wedding day and she told me that just before their wedding the church had 'lost' it's roof but she didn't say anything else so I assumed they either had an 'open air' wedding or changed churches.
Anyway, when I began my research about six years ago, I remembered I had my parents marriage certificate.  I went over it making notes on the name of church, witnesses etc. and put it away again, until the other day...
I was talking with a cousin and he was saying how much my dad loved his boxing and told me the club he fought out of - The Bradfield, Camberwell - was still there, he laughed and said 'he loved it so much he even managed to get married in the club'.  I looked at him and said 'no St. Lukes, I have the certificate to prove it.'  Off I went and produced the certificate and there in black and white... Marriage soleminized at the Bradfield Gymnasiam, being a place duly licensed by the Bishop, the Church of St. Luke, Camberwell.'  And at the bottom 'married in the said Gymnasium.'  I couldn't believe what I was seeing.  I have looked at that certificate over and over again and yet all I have ever seen is the name of the church.
I'm worried now about how much other information I have looked at and yet NOT SEEN.
I think I'd better go and look over all the others!

I desperately need to find my gr.gr.grandparents in 1851 in order to piece all the bits together, so could someone please do a look up for them?
I'm afraid I don't have much information, but here's what I have:

JOSEPH DINMORE ropemaker/twine spinner poss. b. 1799 Woolwich.  I think his wife's name is PHOEBE.  I do know they have a son THOMAS JOSEPH DINMORE born c.1837 in Walworth, Surrey and there may be an EMMA SUSSANAH b. 1839 also in Walworth.  I know Thomas was living in Neat Street when he married in 1859 so 'assume' the family were living in or around the Walworth/Camberwell area in 1851.

I have been unable to find this couple on later censuses.  I think I have Phoebe Dinmore widowed on the 1861 so desperately need the info. from '51 to confirm everything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm trying to find info. on an uncle of mine who was a pow in WW2 and also a step-uncle who was apparently killed in Japan in WW2 are there any sites to help with this kind of research?
I have tried CWGC site for my step-uncle, but can't find him.

I'd be very grateful for any pointers.

Completed Census Requests / help piecing jigsaw together please. - completed -
« on: Tuesday 03 May 05 19:51 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to piece together my gr.grandfather's family, but can't locate the missing links and thought one of you puzzle experts might be able to give me some suggestions.
These are the pieces I have:

On IGI I found
Thomas Joseph Dinmore (my gr.grandfather) b. 1837 Walworth, Father Joseph Dinmore, mother Phoebe - can't find on GRO
Catherine Dinmore 1827 Newington, same parents - have parish register.
Emma Susannah Dinmore 1839 Walworth same parents - have GRO index.
I also have a Joseph Dinmore born 1799 Woolwich, but haven't been able to confirm.
I have a marriage for a Joseph Dinmore and Phoebe in 1819, St.Giles in the Fields, again can't confirm.
I do have a marriage certificate for Thomas 1859 Camberwell which confirms father as Joseph Dinmore, ropemaker.
I also have Thomas and his family from '61-'91, but can't find Joseph and Phoebe on any censuses.  I did however find a JOHN DINMORE, ropemaker in 1861 with mother Phoebe 63 W. living with him... could this be my Phoebe?  I don't know because I can't find a birth for John or a death for Joseph.
As you can see, I have a lot of pieces, just can't confirm they belong to my puzzle.  Has anyone got any suggestions, PLEASE?

The Common Room / Stupid question!
« on: Saturday 30 April 05 22:01 BST (UK)  »
Sorry to ask such a daft question but... I want to add something like 'all transcriptions are Crown Copyright etc' at the bottom of my postings as I keep forgetting to actually mention it in replies, do I just go to change profile and type it in the area where my research interests are?
I'm really thick when it comes to this sort of thing!

Completed Census Requests / 1851/1861 lookup please - completed -
« on: Thursday 28 April 05 20:25 BST (UK)  »
Could someone please lookup the following people in 1851 and 1861 please?

Thomas Joseph Dinmore b. circa 1837 Walworth , Surrey and
Maria born circa 1842, Newington.  They married in 1859 in Camberwell.  I have looked for them on 1837online, and although there is a Thomas, I can't find my one - I don't know how complete this is.  Thomas is a ropemaker.

Also I'm looking for Thomas in 1851 with his father Joseph Dinmore, also a ropemaker.

As Thomas was born and married in Walworth/Camberwell, I am assuming he was there in both '51 and '61.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
