Canada Lookup Request / RCAF service records look up please
« on: Friday 29 July 11 16:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I know this is a long shot, but I can't think of any other way of finding out the info. I need.

Is anyone planning a visit to Library & Archives Canada, Ottawa who would be willing to check something for me?

A couple of years ago I wrote to the Archives asking about the service records of my husbands late uncle who was killed while serving with the RCAF during WW2.  They very kindly sent me some documents - notes made at his interview when he applied to the force and details of the accident which killed him and the pilot.  They said I could request a copy of his full service record but that this could hold a few pages or a couple of hundred but they were unable to tell me how many there were.  The letter did state I could examine the records in person, but as I live in England there's not much chance of me being able to do that any time soon.

I can't take the chance of ordering the records only to find I can't afford it.  So I was wondering therefore, if anyone was planning a visit to the archives and had time, if there was anyway they could find out how many pages there are so I can work out if I can afford to order them.

As I said, I know it's a long shot, but I have to try.

World War One / 1st Garrison Batt. Warwick Reg.
« on: Tuesday 22 February 11 19:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Sorry to be a pest but as any of you that read my earlier request will know, I'm trying to find out what my grandfather did during WWI.

SOFO were able to confirm the info. I had about his time with OBLI and gave me the date he transferred regiments.

After being home for a year my grandfather was transferred to 1st Garrison Batt. Royal Warwickshire Regiment on 10th August 1915.  According to the piece on the National Roll, he took part in the engagement at  El Fasher and was present at the entry into Jerusalem.  Is there any way I can confirm this?
I've tried finding information about the batt. online but all I can find is when it was formed and that it went to Egypt.

World War One / medal card query
« on: Monday 05 April 10 15:34 BST (UK)  »
I have a medal card but don't understand the info. on it and wondered if anyone could explain it for me.

Next to the discharge date it gives the cause for discharge as "Para 392(xvi)" then in red 'WO letter re 3039'

In 'Action taken' it has List RE/3039 then written across it in red has 'name erased therefrom' followed by 'Form Ca G ? sent' then 'resubmitted on list RE/3275'.

I'm assuming it means the reason for his discharge meant his name was taken off the medal roll, then put on again??

If anyone can clarify this for me I would be very grateful.

World War One / how can I find more info.?
« on: Tuesday 29 December 09 16:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

A few months ago I found the details below on the National Roll of WWI,  armed with his nos. and Regs. I looked for my grand-dad's service records, but sadly they didn't survive.  I've just been going through the info. I have and although I know I can't find anything specific about my grand-dad I thought it would be good to find out about the Regs. he was in but I don't know how/where to begin. This is what I have -
WELCH C.H., Private Oxfordshire and Buckingham Light
Infantry and Sapper R.E....mobilised from reserves at
outbreak of hostilities....served in retreat from Mons and
battles of Le Cateau, the Marne and was wonded on the
Aisne in September 1914.  He was invalided home,  after
recovery sailed for Egypt in August 1915. ... he took part
in engagement at El Fasher and was present at entry
into Jerusalem in the Palestime campaign in December
1917.  He was then transferred to Royal Engineers ... he
      was demobolised in July 1919.

I found his medal card so know he was also in Royal Warwickshire Reg.

If anyone could point me in the right direction I would be very grateful.

Kerry / Help needed with Dingle research
« on: Friday 24 April 09 20:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

Sorry to be a pest, but I need a bit of guidance.

My son-in-law has asked me to find his Irish Ancestors and I'm at a loss!

Luckily his mother was able to give me the name of the street her mother's parents were living when she was born and knew her grandfather's name, so I had no problem locating the family on 1911 census,  but I can't seem to find anything online to help me go back further.

Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

World War Two / RAF/RCAF Service Records?
« on: Thursday 26 February 09 17:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

Before I begin may I apologise to anyone who may have answered this query a couple of years ago - I'm sure I posted a query and have searched Rootschat but I'm blowed if I can find it!!!

I would like to trace the service records of my husband's uncle, but I'm not sure who would them.

I know he was killed while testing a plane in Canada.  According to newspaper cuttings,  he joined the RAF in c.1931 and served as a Scientific officer from 1932-36.  He was then with the British Colonial Service as a meteorological officer in Singapore before being posted to the RCAF Station at Rockliffe.  He was killed on 13th September 1941 along with Squadron Leader Briggs when the plane they were testing crashed.

My query is - would the RAF hold his service records or the RCAF?

Again apologies if anyone gave me this info. in an earlier posting.

Regards
Sandie
