Cardiganshire / Mayors of Aberystwyth. Stolen ship.
« on: Thursday 01 January 15 15:21 GMT (UK)  »
My ancestors lived in Great Dark Street Aberystwyth - Jones and Howells.
I have been told that Catherine Jones ,who had money, inherited because her family were Mayors in Aberystwyth. This would be pre 1860.
Where do I go to research people who were mayors in Aber ?

Also there is a story that a young girl in the family went to the docks taking a ship!
Sounds far fetched but where would I look ?
Thanks for reading this. All ideas gratefully accepted !     :)

Wiltshire / Perry Indenture
« on: Thursday 18 December 14 12:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I have inherited some research from 1946 to the present day. The days of evidence obtained by visiting the records offices and churches etc. I have been helping over the past ten years so have got some idea of what I am doing.

I have found a reference to "intermarriage".Does that just mean marrying ?

She was my great grandmother and in her early life had a daughter that she kept until the child was about fourteen. I have the birth cert and the mother's name is partly changed .She names herself Parker and the fathers name James William Parker. In the indenture he is James William Perry and she is Mary Sarah Sissons Parker (formerly Percy). This is from around the 1871 census when the whole family can not be found any where else in the country. They appear to have changed their name probably because of the baby who may be illegitimate.I can find no record of a marriage. Also,in varying indentures she refers to herself as a spinster and a widow .She has two half sisters and she also refers to the fact that she is the only true child of John Perry.

How easy was it to give false information during the 1860s and 70s? How easy was it to change your name on census records ? She was the only surviving Perry through three or four generations and so was to inherit the money and lands of William Clare The Coroner of Devizes. She inherited.

They appear to always use the same solicitor.Could the solicitor be complacent in the declarations ?
They must have known she could not be a spinster and a widow !

Any hints or ideas gratefully accepted !

My thoughts without proof are that she had a liaison with a cousin ,the baby Lilian was born, they moved away to avoid the shame and when the child went to a residential school they moved back to Devizes. :-\

Berkshire / Missing from 1901 census
« on: Saturday 08 November 14 17:28 GMT (UK)  »
I have decided I must have genealogy fever!!!!!

Sorry if you have seen similar posts before but I am at my wits end. Desperate for any help !

I am searching for Lilian Clara Perry in the 1901 census. In 1891 she is in St Mary west ward with her sister ( she is in fact her Aunt!) she is a tailors born Watlington Oxford.I have her birth cert where she is recorded as Lilian Perry Clare father James William Parker and mother Mary Sarah Sissons Parker formerly Percy. ( The family changed their name from Perry to Percy we think to avoid the stigma of the birth as they had also moved house and there is no marriage to a Parker.)
In 1902 I have a marriage cert for Lilian Clare Perry to Albert Edward Deadman in St Bartholemews Reading. They both give their address as 20 Amity Street and the two witnesses are of the same address. I have searched for many months all over the country for either of them in 1901census.Were they living together pretending to be married ? Who knows as I have tried all combinations. It is not likely that they are out of the country as on the marriage cert she gives no occupation and he an Ag Lab.
Any ideas from any one ? Thank you for reading this. I just feel that they must be somewhere but of course they could be in a boarding house using a false name or some one just didn't enter them on the census !
Thank you.   ??? ??? ???

Berkshire / Lillian Clare Perry
« on: Sunday 10 August 14 14:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi!
All thoughts and suggestions please.

I am searching for my Grandfather's half sister. Her name on the birth cert. was Lilian Perry Clare.
Birth registered in 1866 in Watlington County of Oxford.
Here after it gets very complicated!
Her mother is on the birth cert. as Mary Sarah Sissons formerly Park (crossed through) then Percy is written. She claims the child's father is James William Parker. He never appears and there is no evidence of a marriage.

The family are missing from the 1871 census.
(More complications!)

After many months of searching I found the family In Watlington Oxfordshire.
Father's name should be John Perry but recorded as Samuel Percy
Wife as Louisa Percy should be Louisa Perry
Daughter Anne Parker
Daughter Emily Percy ( Emily Imison is the illegitimate daughter of John Perry)
Daughter Alice Percy    Alice      "                    "                "             "       "
Lilian Parker Grandaughter of Samuel who is John !
Matilda Imison Servant. She is the mother of the illegitimate girls Alice and Emily and turns up on other census records living with the family!
The ages and places of birth are all correct.

Lillian turns up in the 1881 census and 1891 census. Then she disappears until 1911 when she is married to Albert Edward Deadman and living in Hambledon Hants..I sent for the marriage cert. all correct. They are both living in 20 Amity Street Reading on the wedding cert.. The two witnesses have the same address on the 1901 census but Albert and Lillian are no where to be found.
I have tried links to other family members, different names, etc etc. I can not find them in the 1901 census. At this point they were not married  but I tried married name too.

Please has any one got any suggestions as where they might be?
I can't think they were abroad as she was a milliner living with her Aunt who she thinks is her sister and he is an AG.Lab. in 1911 census!

Thank you for reading this ramble !  I have become like a dog with a bone!

I'd just love to know where she is in 1901. ??? ??? ???

World War One / WW1 British registered in USA
« on: Tuesday 01 July 14 19:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Can any one shed light on the following please ?

Lewis Elwyn Davies  DOB 23/11/1890 (my great uncle) was a draughtsman. We believe he was called up in 1917. We know he was in the RNAS. In 1917 he is registered in Steuben New York.
I realise The States joined WW1 then but why would Lewis be sent to America?
Has any one any ideas as to where else I could look?   ???
I have found his return trip to Britain.
Thanks M.

Hi,hope I'm doing this correctly.Never sure of the right way to ask for help.

I am searching for the birth of Louisa Elizabeth Maslen born around 1820 .In every census record from 1841 onwards she gives Covent garden as her place of birth.

I believe that this was Westminster and Central Middlesex ?

Two wonderful Roots Chatters have told me that it could be St Paul's listed as the Strand but later came under Westminster and the records are held at St Anne's library Westminster.

They also suggested looking at Family Search from which I guess they mean LDS.

I also believe that it could be other churches in the area and would like to know those names.

I understand that the records are not online.I do not expect anyone to go and get them for me but would be grateful for suggestions of where and how to search as I hope to be visiting London at the end of this month.

Thank you.M. ???

London and Middlesex / Covent Garden
« on: Friday 17 January 14 15:34 GMT (UK)  »
I am searching for a birth given in many census records as Covent Garden.
I understand that it would have been in Middlesex around 1810 - 1825 ?
Can anyone tell me which churches were considered to be in Covent Garden at that time?
I believe that the details for Westminster and Central Middlesex are not on line and am therefore trying to work out where to go next.
Thanks.
PS  Hope I have put the message in the right place.

Wiltshire / Neate/Perry /All Cannings
« on: Tuesday 19 November 13 18:34 GMT (UK)  »
Thought I had better start a new thread. I am awaiting birth ,death and marriage certs for a William John Neate Perry but have seen on Roots Chat that others are linking Perry and Neate to All Cannings.
I know it is just outside Devizes , on the Southbroom side I believe , and wondered if any one else has a Perry /Neate connection. I have been to Devizes but never to All Cannings so I guess that needs to be the next trip. Any info. gratefully received. As always thank you.

Wiltshire / Help please.Possible look up?
« on: Monday 11 November 13 16:39 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find birth, death or marriage of John William Neate Perry.I know he existed as he is referred to in legal documents. His sister was born in 1848 and she is Mary Sarah Sissons Perry born in Devizes of parents John Perry of Devizes and Louisa Elizabeth Perry  nee Maslen born in Covent Garden.

Possibility that John William is not a Perry but used his 'father's' name, as his mother may have had a relationship….can't find under Maslen or his father is John Perry so therefore he is registered under a different name as his father was not married to his mother!

Unfortunately there is a history of this as John Perry the father left his wife Louise and daughter Mary in Devizes around 1850 and took off to London where he produced two more daughters with a Matilda Imison.

An elderly relative says she believes he was born in 1863 and yet another suggestion puts him as 1819 and not the son of 'our' John Perry at all!

I have searched in free BMD and on Ancestry and looked at random links on Roots but over the last two months am having no luck.

Any suggestions gratefully received! Thank you. :(
