World War One / Help with a WWI medal card please
« on: Wednesday 19 July 06 12:31 BST (UK)  »
Please could someone advise on a WWI medal card for my great-uncle please?

I can make out that he was awarded the 1914 Star and a clasp.
I know from the CWGC site that he died in October 1915 of disease in Salonika, having attained the rank of Lance Corporal.

Does this card indicate that he was always with the Royal Irish Rifles, and if so, why would that be, given that he was brought up in Bradford with no Irish ancestry?

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / My first field trip! Advice needed.
« on: Thursday 06 April 06 17:07 BST (UK)  »
After about a year of searching online (and using the notes my late mother made from some original sources) I am going up to Yorkshire after Easter to do some research.
What I'll be looking for will be mostly parish records pre-1837 for the following areas:
Eastrington/Hive/Sandholme
Ellerton
Sutton on Hull (formerly Sutton in Holderness)
Cowick/Snaith
What's the best place to head for?  It appears that the registers are held in various places eg. Beverley, Borthwick Inst, Hull, Doncaster - or is there somewhere I can go where I can see them all?
And any general hints & tips would be much appreciated!

Could someone with access to Parish Registers kindly look up the birth of George BLAKE in East Grafton, Bedwyn?
If the ages on his marriage and death certs are correct, he should have been born between 2nd Aug 1856 and 23rd June 1857.  Mother's name Louisa BLAKE so probably no father's name given!  Can't find it on FreeBMD or Ancestry.com
Thanks a lot!

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / PR or 1841 census lookup please
« on: Tuesday 09 August 05 15:56 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have access to the 1841, or to parish registers for Howden and Hull areas?
I wonder if you'd mind doing a lookup on the names CAVILL/CAVIL/CAVILLE and SCOTT?

These are the people I'm looking at:
John CAVILL baptised 27.9.1789 Hive near Howden.
Married Frances/Fanny SCOTT (born Asselby about 1794) in Howden, 1819
Daughter Elizabeth Cavil born 1819 Eastrington
Son George [my gg-grandfather] born 1825 in Sutton-in-Holderness, now Sutton on Hull.  John’s occupation given as corn miller.
Other possible son: William baptised 16.6.1822 Ellerton – son of a John & Fanny Cavill.
Son James, born about 1831.  James also became a corn miller in Sculcoates, Hull.

I'm hoping to find out anything more about John & Frances' parents and siblings, and any other children they may have had.
I'll be really grateful if you can help!

Thanks
