Lancashire Completed Lookup Requests / Indecipherable 1841 census images
« on: Sunday 27 November 05 22:55 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help?
I have been reviewing the 1841 census for Ribby with Wrea in Lancashire (HO107/496/12) on the Stepping Stones website. Unfortunately there are several parts that are so faint they are illegible.

I wondered whether it's worth subscribing to another organisation to get a better image but I don't want to waste my money if the image is the same. I'm not sure whether different groups have actually filmed the censuses themselves or whether they were filmed once and different organisations buy them for commercial use, and add an index ? If the former, then the quality of the film for Ribby with Wray is going to be a problem for everyone.
Does anyone have a legible copy ?

Any help much appreciated,
Thanks
Bev

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Bolton 1876 PO Directory - SHARMAN
« on: Saturday 01 October 05 22:54 BST (UK)  »
Fitty,

Saw your kind offer in the lookup offers.
Please can you lookup 2 names for me ...

Joseph Sharman -
In 1871 he was at the Crompton Monument Beerhouse, 35-39 Mill Street, Bolton with a man alleged to be his cousin (John Cooper). I know that he started his own brewery from there following the death of John Cooper in 1868. He subsequently built a brewery (Mere Hall Brewery) which I believe opened around 1875. The brewery business was J. Sharman & Sons.

Ann Cooper - This is the wife of Joseph Sharman's cousin, John Cooper. According to a newspaper article about Jospeh, she left the Crompton Monument Beerhouse when her husband died in 1868 but I don't know where she went.

Thanks

Please could someone lookup Joseph SHARMAN, born 1841 in Tinkersich, Tapton. Sometimes the location of his birth is listed as Brimington. I know he lived in Calow in 1861. Parents are Benjamin and Elizabeth.

Thanks in anticipation,

Derbyshire / Mines in Derbyshire - mid 1800s
« on: Thursday 15 September 05 20:46 BST (UK)  »
My g.grandfather was born in Tapton, Derbyshire in 1841. He moved to Bolton as a young man and founded his own brewery (J. Sharman & Sons). According to a newspaper article describing his career he started his working life down a pit owned by a large coal and iron company which later became the Stavely Coal and Iron Company - this early career was age 8 until the ripe old age of 10 !! During this time an accident left him with a mark on his head.

I wonder if anyone can help with identifying any sources of information relating to mines in the area which may help me identify the pit he worked in and maybe even find some record of an accident around 1850/1.

Any ideas would be much appreciated,
Thanks
Bev

Hi,

My Great Grandfather built and ran the J. Sharman & Sons brewery in Bolton, Lancashire from around 1875 to 1916. The business started in the Crompton Monument beerhouse and then moved to the Mere Hall Brewery. The business also owned a significant number of pubs and beerhouses in the Bolton area.

I am keen to locate any advertisements, beer labels or similar memorabilia relating to the brewery.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

The Common Room / Same Man ?
« on: Monday 08 August 05 22:05 BST (UK)  »
The picture on the left is my g. grandfather from a newspaper article about his life. The man on the right is believed by family to be the same man. I'm not so sure - views welcome.

Unfortunately, despite following the instructions in the 'How to use Rootschat' area, I couldn't insert the image into the text and so have attached it as a file.

Thanks
