The Common Room / Historical events - how did you discover them?
« on: Thursday 20 February 14 21:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

After watching a genealogical program about three people who had ancestors at the battle of Trafalgar, I was wondering - how does one find this out?

What links do you have to historical events and how did you find them?

Cheshire / James Bennett - trouble finding birth certificate.
« on: Tuesday 18 February 14 19:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm researching one of my great grandfathers and I'm having trouble finding his birth certificate.

James Bennett, born about 1846 in Bollington, Cheshire.

Father - George Bennett
Mother - possibly Elizabeth (surname unknown.

Married Isabella Parkinson in 1870, Heysham, Lancashire.

The census records I've found show he was born in Bollington. The marriage records and parish records show him born in Stockport.

James Bennett is a very common name. I'd appreciate any advice / suggestions!

Thanks,

Rich

Limerick / Advice with researching Irish ancestors
« on: Friday 13 December 13 20:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I've been researching my family tree for the last few years and have now started with my wife's tree. Her English side I've had no issues with but her Irish side is a completely new arena for me.

I'm looking for some advice and hints in where to start! I've asked my mother in law about her side of the family and have the names of her grandparents as well as where they were born and a rough year of birth.

To add confusion to the matter, her father changed his surname when he moved to England from O'Rhian (I'm told this is the spelling...) to O'Ryan.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Rich

Durham / Help needed - Wills of a Durham man
« on: Sunday 20 October 13 18:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I've never looked at a will before and after looking on the national archives and Origins.net, i'm more than a little confused and lost!

I'm looking for a George LODGE born 1785 in Stainton, Durham. The family lived in Startforth and Barnard Castle with his last son being born in 1810.

A family tree on Ancestry has his death in 1814 (no place shown) and on this family tree, the owner has commented on the Will listing his wife as Mary WILSON and also being the executor.

He apparently was a solider and a weaver.

I've also seen another family tree that shows his birth (and his childrens births as Startforth, Yorkshire)

Where would be the best place to start looking for this will? I have sent a message to the owner of this tree but have had no reply!

Thanks,

Rich

Armed Forces / British Army early 1800's - help needed
« on: Thursday 10 October 13 17:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I've just stumbled across a family tree on Ancestry which shows a common x? Great Grandfather. Now i'm happy I have the correct person and what interested me was a comment by another member on this tree I found.

George Lodge
born 1785 in Stainton, Durham, England
died 1814

Employment soldier and weaver.

This person has recorded a will in 1814 which simply says 'intestate wife mary lodge adminisrator'

Now I've sent them a message on Ancestry but seeing as they haven't logged in for over a year, i'm not confident i'll get a reply.

I've quickly searched on FindMyPast and can't see any service records. There was one result for a George Lodge on the Waterloo medal roll (i'm discounting this though! )

Any pointers or help, greatly appreciated!

Dorset / Zachariah Moore - Born 1822, missing until 1855!
« on: Sunday 21 July 13 15:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to find out where a Great x? Grandfather was between 1822 and 1855. He was born in 1822 and I can't find him until his census record in 1861! I have him marrying a Mary Elizabeth Galpins in February 1855 in Sturminster Newton, Dorset.

The 1861 census shows that he was an 'Agg Lab' but I can't find any other records for him.

I'm going to order his marriage certificate, which I hope might shed some light on where he might of been (perhaps he was in the military?!) but I was wondering if any members here might be able to cast an eye over the census records to see if I have missed anything? I'd appreciate any hints or suggestions!

Thank you

Rich

Armed Forces / Army pension records 1922-1958
« on: Saturday 29 June 13 00:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I've tried Googling this but couldn't find a definite answer. I'm researching my Great Grandfather who served in the British Army and then the Indian Army (under the British Raj) as an officer. He retired as a Lt Colonel.

Can anyone help me with what information his pension records would contain (if they still exist) and who I would need to contact to obtain them?

I've gone through various other sources to research him and this is my last possible source!

Thanks,

Rich

Armed Forces / Help with picture of uniform
« on: Tuesday 07 May 13 00:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

This is a picture of a relative from my fiancé's side of the family. The clothing looks military to me but I can't place it.

It is the best quality we have, any ideas would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Rich
