New Zealand Completed Requests / Is this New Zealand ? Photo ID
« on: Wednesday 05 August 09 03:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi Kiwi chatters  ;D

What do you think......have a look at this topic - can you help?

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,396998.0.html

Do you think the photo is NZ?

I'm sure I've seen  the yellowy/green tree or shrub all over the place - but often in parks etc - is it a native? In which case it would give the photo a country for Lisa  :)

I'll lock this topic, but if you have any clues maybe you could add to the other topic.

Cheers

US Lookup Requests / Robert Millar BLYTH - 1920, 1930
« on: Wednesday 25 March 09 12:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all  ;D

If some lovely lookers can help, I would like to find Robert Millar BLYTH in the 1920 & 1930 Census  - in PA, and probably Philadelphia.

Background:
Born 1876 Dairsie, Fife Scotland.
Immigrated to US 1911; wife Elizabeth (b abt 1881 Glasgow SCT) followed a short time  with 3 children: William b abt 1905, John b abt 1908 and CHristina b abt 1910.  (I have manifest)

Any information on Robert (my great grand-uncle) or his wife and children, would be very welcome as I know next to nothing of their lives.

In 1942 at age 63 (sic) he registered for WW2 at which time he was living in Wiltshire Rd, Upper Darby, Delaware, PA. (I have copy of card).  He said an Edna M BLYTH would always know his address.

Thanks a lot!

Durham / St Joseph's Childrens Home for Girls, Darlington - 1950's
« on: Monday 14 July 08 14:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi all  ;D

I wonder if there are any chatters out there who have past connection to St Joseph's Children's Home for Girls  in Darlington - particularly if they were there during approx 1951 to 1957?

Would love to make a connection with anyone who was in that home during that time! Or anyone who recalls their family having girls from the Home around to their family home for an afternoon etc.

(I do know a reunion is happening in Newcastle next month for 'old girls" from the 1940's and 50's)

The Common Room / IMAGE for Shelleyf
« on: Friday 22 February 08 05:26 GMT (UK)  »
Can't post image on topic:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,287578.msg1704679.html#msg1704679

So putting it here for shelleyf to have a look at in relation to her query in above topic

The first part of the image is your FAIRS - you can see Mary there, followed by Harriott.

The part underneath (the age 70 and age 7)  is from the next page, same enumerator - for comparison as to how he wrote his 7's.

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / GRIFFIN - Weeford Parish 1800-1841
« on: Wednesday 23 May 07 07:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone!

Background:
* Thomas GRIFFIN jnr was born about 1810 in Packington, Weeford (believe chr 1810 Weeford.to Thomas GRIFFIN snr  and Hannah)
* His father was Thomas GRIFFIN b abt 1777 Abbots Bromley, and I believe his mother was probably Hannah SALT.
* Father & son are in the 1841 Census in Packington at seperate locations, and in the 1851 in the same household.

Thomas GRIFFIN Jnr, I believe, first married a woman named Sarah, and had 2 daughters: Mary abt 1833 and Ann Margaret abt 1835.
*Then Sarah died, and Thomas remarried in October 1839 to Phoebe HILL. (they had a son WIlliam GRIFFIN b 1841 Packington). I have details, including all possible Census records for:
- Mary (my line), married 1) William WORTHINTON, 2) Thomas GRIFFIN b 1833 Hopwas
- her sister Ann Margaret (married WIlliam DEAKIN)
- their step-mother Phoebe, and father Thomas
- and half-brother William (married Fanny HURST)

Thomas GRIFFIN snr, I believe married Hannah SALT  on 5 Jan 1804 in Hints, Staffordshire - Witness' were Ann ASTON and Charles EMERY
And the reason they married there and not in Weeford  is because the "Weeford Church was being rebuilt" at that time.

What I am looking for is Parish records (or MI's where applicable) for the following) - if anyone has any knowledge or access to records, I would be extremely grateful!
- Thomas GRIFFIN jnr - marrying a woman named Sarah, possibly in the Weeford Parish or wider Lichfield area, probably between 1828 and 1835.
- Mary GRIFFIN baptism probably around 1833 in Weeford, but maybe as early as 1831.
- Ann Margaret GRIFFIN baptism around 1835 Weeford (there is one IGI but it is submitted, not extracted)
- A Sarah GRIFFIN burial in Weeford - possibly in St Mary the Virgin Churchyard sometime between 1834 and 1839.
- A Hannah GRIFFIN burial  possibly Weeford and  in St Mary the Virgin Churchyard sometime between 1818 and 1841

Or of course, anyone who may have a connection to these GRIFFINs.

Many thanks
Cheers  ;D

Census and Resource Discussion / Ancestry defies logic - Scottish Census!
« on: Sunday 18 March 07 20:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere, but I couldn't find a topic if there is one!

I sent this email to Ancestry:

"        Could you please tell me why the crucial information of "Marital Status" is not provided on the online Scots Census transcriptions (excepting 1841 of course, where that information was not originally collected)? With families often using common names, or with families not being together etc on a Census, the Marital Status is often a vital clue to assisting us in our research.

Or is that information being withheld in order to 'force' us to pay for the image on Scotlands People in order ot check the marital status?  If that' s not the reason,  I would be interested what IS the reason - and are there plans to include this information on your databases in the near future?

Thanks for your attention
Regards...."

And , in a timely fashion,  just got an email back from them.......

Dear Anne,
Thank you for your email.

It is possible marital status was not one of the census document categories for the Scotland 1851-1901 Censuses. Regardless, inserting the gender and relationship to the head of the household would often suffice, and would even be more specific in a search.

Why maintain Marital Status when you can use those fields to search with? You can also try typing in the word married or single in the Keyword(s) section, and sucessfully bring up marital relationships.

Best regards,

Matthew

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Joah PEACE - 1861 >
« on: Friday 16 February 07 05:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hello All!

I would like some lookups to help  sort out the family (wife & chd) of:
Joah PEACE b 1837 Bradfield
In 1858 he married Caroline MORILL, b abt 1839 Sheffield

1861: I would imagine somewhere in Sheffield?
Joah  should be with wife Caroline, and 2 children:
Caroline age 2 and Joseph age 1

1871: They are indexed in  RD Sheffield, Sub RD: Brightside; Piece 4692, Folio 100
with their children: Caroline 12, Joseph 11,  Sarah A 8, William H 7, Albert 5, Esther 2, Alice 2wks
Could I please have full details off this census.

1881: This is where I am confused! Daughters Sarah A and Esther are with their married sister, Caroline - no problem there. But - other chd Joseph, William H, Albert & Alice appear to be at: Piece 4658, Folio 115, pg 19 in Brightside Bierlow - Boarders in a household with what appears to be parents named William and Ann.......who are the same age as  Joah & Caroline???
Could I please have a check of this Census to confirm the full  household? And does the Census indicate a blood relationship to Ann THOMSON of the same address they are at?

Joah, I think died 1890 and Caroline 1900 - could they have really been so misnamed on the 1881?

1891: Can Caroline (the mother) be found on the 1891?

There is some indications Joah may have gone by the name "Jack" also

Thanks for help - it's appreciated
Cheers  ;D

Hello all

I believe the households will include Mrs Mary Ellen MARSDEN  b abt 1871 Sheffield and her huband James b abt 1871 Bradfield  - am interested in other members of the houses  too, as in 1871, Mary Ellen (nee PEACE) age 10 was living at Woodland View with her PEACE Grandmother (who died 1882).

I am trying to determine who Mary Ellen's parents were...
