World War Two / Odd Request
« on: Thursday 15 October 09 20:03 BST (UK)  »
Sorry...couldn't really think of a better title :S
I am literally looking for a name of a man, who died in WW2. I have been set this challenge by my boyfriend's aunt's friend (who lives in Spain). I believe the man in question is her father? - or grandfather. I have been given this information, written on a piece of paper.
Date (of death?): 05/09/1942.
He was on the SS Saga Naga, which sounds pretty unusual...
And then I have the following phrases, which I don't really understand: "Lance Cove", "Bell Island" & "Newfoundland".
So all in all - is there any way that I'm able to put a name to all of this information? It's a bit of an odd request, and even I'm not entirely convinced by it. But everything's worth a go hey!

Thanks in advance :D

World War One / tracing a soldier's record via a service number??
« on: Monday 12 October 09 21:56 BST (UK)  »
Hello All
I'm interested in finding the WW1 records of Charles Reuben Thorpe, who died 26/03/1917 aged 19. His service number was 251027. Is there anyone way to find out about him - i.e. where/how he died etc?
also - what information is given on a medal card?
also also  :D - it says on the cwgc website that he is on a memorial in Israel - why there??
Any help very gratefully received :D

England / Very Tricky Question
« on: Tuesday 29 September 09 16:01 BST (UK)  »
Hello All
I've just found out that my Irish great-grandmother worked, at some stage, as a matron in a hospital in either Devon or the Isle of Man (Douglas). I have no information about her whatsoever - this memory is from my aunt, who only knew her as a very small child. I know that my grandmother was born 1900ish in Wexford, Ireland.
So...am wondering...is there anyway possible that I could try and find out more about this woman, based on such a tiny scrap of info??  ???  I know it's pretty much impossible but thought it was worth a go!

Could someone please look up Alfred Garrad, and his wife to be, Hannah Prior, in the 1841/51/61 censuses?
Hannah was born in 1841 roughly, on the 1871 and 81 censuses it says in Herongate.

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Charles Destas Mecklenburgh
« on: Monday 24 August 09 09:16 BST (UK)  »
Hello All
Got a bit of a complicated tale here; am basically trying to find out if the two men mentioned beneath are related or not (looong story as to why :S )
Any help in proving or disproving would be greatly appreciated!

1) Alfred Mecklenburgh. b. 1848ish in Suffolk. Son of Samuel Mecklenburgh; husband of Eliza Amelia Cook (m. 1890); father of Cecil, Ernest and Emma.
2) Charles Destas Mecklenburgh. b. 1862ish in Chelmsford/Colchester (it varied). Son of Charles Destas Mecklenburgh; husband of Kate Caroline Tapplin; father of Alfred Samuel, Kate Caroline, Alice Maud, Hilda Louise, Charles Dastes, Alice May.

I just think that Mecklenburgh is such an unusual name; there do appear to be a great number of Mecklenburghs in Colchester and the surrounding area, that they must surely be related somehow? It is just trying to work out how ???

Any help very gratefully received.
Thank you! :D
