Dumfriesshire / Found Maggie McLean is she yours?
« on: Sunday 23 September 07 03:25 BST (UK)  »
I have found a Maggie McLean born in 1856 in Scotland buried in a cemetery plot in Illinois that was paid for by a William McLean. She died in 1900. I am trying to find out if Maggie and William are a part of my McLean family. No other information is known about Maggie. No maiden name. William McLean born in Dumfries in 1849 may have married a Maggie and then immigrated to America.

I have been searching for my Alexander Fraser Thomson's grave in Scotland. It would mean a lot to me to find him. I know if someone is searching for Maggie it would mean a lot to them too to know where she is buried. I am hoping to find her family.

Dumfriesshire / McLean Family of Dumfries
« on: Sunday 23 September 07 02:23 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for information on my McLean family. Mary Martin married William McLean in 1829 in Dumfries. They would have six children. My great great grandmother was their daughter Henrietta who married Alexander Fraser Thomson in 1866. Henrietta and Alexander would immigrate to America in 1874. Once in America the family wanted to return to Scotland. It must have been decided that Alexander would go back first and then send for the family, but unfortunately he becomes ill and dies in Glasgow.

I am trying to find out about Henrietta's siblings: Margaret born 1830; Isabel born 1837; Mary Ann born 1839; Marian born 1842; Henrietta born 1844; and William born 1849. Their father died in 1849. Mother remarried to a Brady.

I am hoping to find out if any of them immigrated to America, too. Or if they remained in Scotland.

Thank you for any assistance that you may be able to give me.

Aberdeenshire / Thomson's in Rathen, Aberdeen
« on: Wednesday 19 September 07 18:00 BST (UK)  »
Still searching my Thomson family. Peter THOMSON married Susan Sarah GORDON both born in the 1700's and had four known children in Rathen, Aberdeen. There names were William, 1806; Andrew, 1807; Mary, 1809; and John, 1812. Other than William I have little information on these children except christening dates from the IGI. Hoping someone would know something about this family or can tell me where to search in Rathen.

Thank you,

Lanarkshire / Alexander Fraser Thomson
« on: Sunday 16 September 07 03:11 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor Alexander Fraser Thomson had immigrated to America with his family in 1874 from Glasgow. A few years later he returned to Glasgow alone and died in an infirmary. We believe he may have died in 1878 but haven't been able to confirm this. I have been told that he boarded at a Mrs. McCormick's. Mrs. McCormick wrote a letter to Alexander's wife, Henrietta, in America reporting of his death. I am trying to find where he may have been buried and the year of his death. I have one possibility but cannot confirm that I have the right person. Any assistance would be most appreciated.

« on: Wednesday 12 September 07 04:30 BST (UK)  »
Could anyone tell me if there is only one cemetery in Strichen? I am looking for the grave of Jane (DUNCAN) THOMSON who died in 1858. Her death certificate said that she lived on Bridge Street and is buried in the churchyard in Strichen.

Thank you,

I am looking for more information on these families generally in the New Deer, Strichen, and Rathen area (1700-1800's). Some of the family members may have left and went to other areas of Scotland but were mainly from the Aberdeen area. Names I am interested in are:

Peter Thomson married Susan Gordon

William Thomson married Jane Duncan

Alexander Gordon married Anne Kidd

Alexander married Janet Dyker

Gavin Duncan married Jane Sandison

Gavin Duncan married Ann Dyder

Thank you,

I have been trying to find my Scottish family on a passenger list but have not been able to locate them. They may have left Scotland between 1873-1874. What port was generally used? Any search tips would be appreciated.

His father was Peter THOMSON and mother Susan GORDON born in Strichen. Susan's father was Alexander GORDON and mother Ann KIDD.

Aberdeenshire / Thomson Family
« on: Monday 03 September 07 00:42 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find information on my Thomson family. My great great grandfather Alexander Fraser Thomson was born in New Deer in 1841. His parents were William Thomson and Jane Duncan. I was told that he had died in Scotland but cannot find when or where he died. His occupation was a constable. He was in the Kirkpatrick Durham area at one time. Just beginning my search in Scotland and any helpful suggestions where to search would be appreciated. I believe his family lived in the Aberdeen area.

Thank you.
