Down / Alice Dowd born circa 1826 Newry Ireland
« on: Wednesday 24 September 14 09:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi All I thought I'd post one of my problem families. I'm trying to go backwards.

My Great Great Grandmother Alice GIBSON born 30th July 1862 in Bendigo Victoria Australia
Parents: George Gard(i)ner GIBSON (born: Circa 1832 Lancashire) and Alice DOWD (born: Circa 1826 Newry County Down Ireland)

Alice DOWD married John AUGLAM in Ireland, when?
They had a daughter Mary Ann AUGLAM in County Down Ireland in 1857, she died in Bendigo on 28th January 1859 (aged 1 year 9 months and had been in Victoria 1 year)

I'd like to try and find Alice's parents.

Cheers

The Common Room / Why would they change their Surname?
« on: Saturday 26 April 14 11:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

The Greco Family continues to give me trouble.

1st I find Ambrose Greco who arrived in Australia in 1908 changed his surname to Gregory  between 1913 & 1924.
Now I find his brother appears to on changed his name too.
Bernard GRECO married Rose Emily GEORGE in 1909.
Their daughter Haidee Theresa V GRECO is born in 1910
In the 1911 census the family is living in Watford, Hertfordshire as Greco.
Their son Melville Bernard F GRECO  is born in West Ham 1913 and another son is born in West Ham 1919.

Bernard dies Jan 1940 as Bernard COOPER
Rose Emily dies 10 Feb 1950 as Rose Emily COOPER
Haidee V T COOPER marries June Qtr 1941 Ilford Essex married name CALVER.
Melville Bernard F COOPER died Oct 1998 in Wales.

This makes me believe this is the same family, but why would they change their name.
Would they have done it legally? If so, can where can I find the documentation?

cheers

The Common Room / Reginald A Gregory - Who were your parents? .. opinions please
« on: Monday 20 October 08 02:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

For many years I have tried to find my Children's Great Grandfathers birth and it has proved to be a problem.  Recently, I found a possible and would like advice/opinions.

Reginald Alexander Gregory was married in Victoria Aus in the 1920's.  He gives his birthplace as Forest Gate London circa 1898 and Parents: Ambrose Gregory & Mary Blackburn.

Before he died he told us his surname was changed from Greco to Gregory and that he came to Victoria on the "Oruba".

With the above information I was able to find Reg (aged 10) and his parents arriving in August 1908.
The 1909 Electoral Roll has Ambrose Greco and his wife Annie living in Bendigo (this matches info passed on by Reg)

Annie Greco disappears, and Ambrose Greco (bachelor) marries Mary Blackburn (widow) nee Blandthorn in 1913.  Ambrose gives his place of Birth as Wales and parents: Francis Greco & Agnes Esta.

The 1901 British Census has Ambrose 'Single' living with his parents (Francis & Angelina) in West Ham, but no mention of Reginald & Annie.

The 1901 Bristish Census also has a Reginald A Sutton living with his mother Annie Sutton (married) in West Ham.
Annie Sutton nee Webb was born in Warrnambool Victoria, and the Webb family moved back to England in the 1890's. (parents: James & Harriet Webb) Harriet (widow) Clara, Walter, Albert & Lydia Webb are living in West Ham in 1901.  Lydia having been born in Melb 1891.
Annie Sutton dies in Victoria in May, 1910, her DC lists 2  children Reginald Alexander aged 11 & Stanley Gordon (deceased).

So, I'm wondering if my Reginald Gregory & Reginald Sutton are one in the same.

I'd like to find a descendent from the Webb family who may be able to confirm or dispel Reginald's parentage.

Carmella born June Qtr 1874 Newport Mon Wales married George Wollacott 11th Oct 1893 at the Register Office in Cardiff.  She appears to have stayed in Wales. Known children:- Charles Francis, Beatrice, George & William.

Ambrose Francis GRECO born 24th July 1876 in Newport Mon Wales.  Ambrose came to Australia with his "wife" & son in August 1908. died in Fitzroy Melb Victoria 11th mar 1945.  Son Reginald Alexander GREGORY was born circa 1898 (can not find the birth) Ambrose was single in 1901.  Occupation: Musician.  According to family history he played at the Hippodrome.

Walter GRECO born march Qtr 1879 in newport.  died in 1935 buried 22 Jun 1935 at Caversham - Hemdean Road Cemetery.  Occupation: Musician

Bernard Herbert GRECO born Dec Qtr 1885  Newport. He married Rosie Emily GEORGE on 9th March 1909 at the Register Office in Reading Berkshire.  In 1916 he was a Bandsman in the Irish Guards.

Adeline GRECO born Dec Qtr 1887 Newport.  She appears to have married Earl H SMITH Dec Qtr 1918 St Giles.  Her Occupation: Musician

Ernest GRECO born Sep Qtr 1893 Cardiff

Agnes GRECO born 11 may 1896 at 74 Cobown St, St John Cardiff.  She married Charles W NEWMAN Dec Qtr 1914 Billericay
