Derbyshire / Long Eaton - coroner's inquest 1940
« on: Wednesday 08 June 05 23:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

One of my Grandfather's cousins died in a railway carriage in 1940 at Trent Station, Long Eaton. His death certificate was issued by Arthur Whiston(?) the coroner for the county of Derby. An inquest was held on 4th Dec 1940.

I've never had to find a coroner's report before so if some kind soul could point me in the right direction I'd be really grateful. As this event was in 1940 am I likely to be able to get a copy of the report as it's less than 100 years ago?

I'd also like to find out if there were any newspaper reports about the inquest but can't work out which would be the likely newspapers of the day!

Thank you
tabitha

The Common Room / To tell or not? Advice please
« on: Tuesday 17 May 05 10:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I've recently discovered that my mum-in-law had a half brother.
I have copies of certificates etc to back this up.

He was born illegitimately 10 years before my mum-in-law (and 10 years before her mother's marriage).

This half brother died in 1983 leaving a wife and 2 children. Both children have married and one I know has 2 children, all living relatively close to mum-in-law.

Now after chatting to my husband about this, we're 99% certain that mum-in-law is not aware of this half brother or his family. Mum-in-law is now in her 70's, in reasonably good health but has admitted that she occassionally puts her head in the sand to avoid things/issues that she doesn't want to be part of.

So what do we do? On the one hand she has a right to know as this is her family, she has a younger brother who although they are not particularly close, she would fight for! ... on the other she may not want to know and I would hate to distress her.

Any ideas on how to deal with this would be appreciated. How to broach the subject with her, test the waters etc. or do you think it should be left well alone?

Thanks for your help

Durham / Kirk Merrington Parish Records - 1769
« on: Wednesday 04 May 05 11:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Does anyone have access to the parish records for Kirk Merrington?

I'm looking for further details of the baptism of Thomas Oliver.

IGI has Thomas baptised 26 Dec 1769, giving his father's name as Thomas Oliver.

I know Thomas (junior!) married Mary Tate on 17 Sept 1793 in Kirk Merrington.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers

The Lighter Side / Take every opportunity.....
« on: Saturday 23 April 05 23:25 BST (UK)  »
A couple of weeks ago I was given an address for my Grandad's cousin. Plucking up my courage I wrote to her and received a lovely letter back inviting me to telephone!

I did and received a warm welcome and lots of snippets of family info and some lovely stories about my ancestors along with her brother's telephone number.

Today I rang this lady's brother and low and behold he's been researching our family for a lot longer than me and has a suitcase full of certificates, wills etc which he has very kindly offered to copy and post to me.

The moral of this story......take every opportunity that comes your way. It may not give results like this but just think in a few years time this brother and sister may not be here and I would never have known two of my relatives or received such enthusiastic help!

The Common Room / Local W.I. - helping family historians!
« on: Saturday 16 April 05 23:23 BST (UK)  »
My mum is the secretary of her local W.I. and after sharing a bottle of wine with the president....over which they discussed my trials and tribulations of researching family history amongst other (more entertaining ;)) things.........

they've decided that at their next meeting they are going to tell the ladies of the help they can give to future generations by making a note of their memories now and adding to it as they are reminded of events, experiences etc.

Maybe we should all give our older relatives a "Memories book" for Christmas......you never know where it might lead!

How I wish someone had suggested that to my Great Grandparents!!  ;D

Durham Completed Look up Requests / Chester-le-Street/Chowdene Birth lookup please.
« on: Saturday 16 April 05 15:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Is anyone able to try and help me find a birth please?

These are the details I have for George Wright. I can't find his birth on 1837online despite trawling through the pages!!

George Wright parents Thomas & Jane Wright.

1871 census - with parents in Chowdene (Chester-le-Street)
                      Age 5, birthplace Chowdene.

1881 census - with parents in Chester Moor (Chester-le-St)
                      Age 16, birthplace Chester-le-Street.

23 Jan 1886 -  marriage to Elizabeth at Chester-le Street
                     Register Office, residence Chester Moor,
                     age 21.

In 1861 his parents were living in Chowdene so don't appear to have moved between 1861 & 1871.

From that he should have been born between 1864 & 1866 in Chowdene! Simple!! (Is it ever??)

Thank you  :)

The Common Room / Advice please - tracing a death
« on: Thursday 14 April 05 20:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I have already posted a similar message to this on a county board but thought I'd try here too for some more general advice!

It's rumoured that my 2xG Grandfather died on a railway line.

George Wright was born in 1865/6 and was alive in 1901. In 1919 he is shown on his daughter's marriage cert as a miner.

My mum says he died before she was born in 1946.

I've checked 1837online between 1919 & 1949 and found loads of George Wrights!! To narrow them down I have looked at the districts. If this story is true the rail line would have been between Easington & Hartlepool (West Hartlepool) districts. This left 4 deaths allowing a +/- 10 year age difference for how old he should have been. (Unsurprisingly not one matched the correct age!)

My question is does any one have any suggestions of a different way to approach this before I start ordering certificates that are more than likely the wrong ones?

Unfortunately I'm at the wrong end of the country to spend a few hours/days/weeks in the appropriate records office!

Cheers

Can anyone think of the name of the author/ publisher of the series of books that tell a photographic history of individual towns? I can't for the life of me remember and I want to order one!

Thanks

Durham / Certificate ordering - Durham County Council
« on: Tuesday 05 April 05 23:28 BST (UK)  »
Durham County council are indexing all of their BMD records.

The index is searchable on line and you can order the certificate from the same site for £7.

It's not complete but is really easy to use!
