Cambridgeshire / The Eagle and Lamb, Ely
« on: Monday 21 July 08 13:02 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I recently found that two of my Gt Gt Gt Grandparents (Mr and Mrs George and 'Vine' Cross), were publicans of The Eagle and Lamb pub in Ely. They were there from 1892-1904. During this time, George died and his widow took over as landlord.

I've got a whole load of records, census bits etc on the pair but I'd like to know if anyone has, or knows the whereabouts, of a photograph of The Eagle and Lamb pub. It has since been demolished (1980s, i think!). Of course, it would be great to see it during the time that my ancestors were landlords... but I'd be happy with ANY photo of it whatsoever.

I've checked out Frith, Google, Cambridgeshire Collection, Flickr, the book Ely Inns and Pubs and none of these appear to have one.

Hope that someone can help...

Durham / Newman in Norton and Bishop Middleham
« on: Saturday 08 December 07 22:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, I've just discovered (with thanks to the 1901 census) that my Gt Gt Grandfather's brother, Daniel Silas Newman, moved North from Cambridgeshire to Durham.

I found him and his family at Norton Junction, Norton, Durham.

Daniel Newman H M 45 Railway Signalman
Elizabeth Newman W M 40 -
Harriet Newman D U 19 -
Arthur Newman S U 17 - Railway Signalman
Rose Newman D U 14 -
Albert Newman S - 8 -
Janet M Newman D - 3 -

His wife and first three children were all born in Bishop Middleham and the last two children were born in Norton (Daniel was born in 'Little Swaffham' Cambridgeshire).

This is the first time that I've found info on this part of my Newman tree and so I was just wondering whether any of the descendants are researching the family!

Fingers crossed!  ::)

Cambridgeshire / A mystery first marriage: 1830s-1850s
« on: Wednesday 28 November 07 22:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I've been stuck for some time now with the mystery identity of my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather's first wife.

My GGGGrandfather's name was James Martin, born about 1815 in Witcham, Cambridgeshire.

In 1850 he married his second wife - Mary Tingey (b.1821, Little Downham). Both have widower/widow on the certificate and so i've been trying to find a suitable marriage for James between the mid 1830s and 1850.

I know it wasnt Susan Loakes of Witcham (married a James Martin in 1842) as she appears with another James (born about the same year!) on the 1851 census...

...but otherwise, i'm stuck and i've run dry of the online and paper resources.

If you can help or suggest a source.. then please do so! I'd be very grateful.

United States of America / Arthur Robert Dewey b.1882
« on: Wednesday 28 November 07 22:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm trying to collect info relating to my Gt Grandfather's oldest brother - Arthur Robert Dewey. He was born in 1882 in Witchford, near Ely, Cambridgeshire, England.

In 1901 he appears on the Camberwell census for London as a 'Car Man'.

In 1904 he returns to Witchford to be witness for his sister's wedding.

In 1906 it would appear that he is onboard SS Minneapolis, leaving London on 4th August, heading for New York (arriving 13th Aug). The 'List or manifest of Alien passengers for the US immigration officer' (charming!) lists what appears to be him - "A. Dewey" of Ely, Cambridgeshire. His fare had been paid for the Atlantic Transport Co and it is noted that he is looking after the horses along with a few others. Further down the document it notes that all of the 'aliens' would be returning to Europe a few days later.... but.... Arthur Robert Dewey is believed to have stayed in the USA.

Do any readers have any info about this?

England / What Killed Him in 1858?
« on: Sunday 19 August 07 21:43 BST (UK)  »
I've just received the death certificate for my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather, Thomas Howlett. He died aged 23 in Littleport, Cambridgeshire. His widow, Caroline, to whom he'd only been married for at most, 3 yrs, managed to give birth to my Gt Gt Grandmother, thus providing me with my ancestral line.

But what was it that killed this 23yr old 'husbandman' from Whelpmoor, Littleport, Cambridgeshire?

I've had a look at the cause of death and i can quite come up with anything that makes sense. I'm not a doctor, so this might be quite easy for someone who is.. but Google isnt liking it either (normally it comes up with many gory possibilities).

From the cause's two words, i'm reading:

PH-THISIC G-TTORITTIS - but that doesn't make sense and there isnt really space in the writing for additional letters. I've compared the letters to the rest of the letters that i can identify on the certificate and it seems like the first word does start with a P.

Anyone have an ideas?

Here's the image files in colour and negative.

any info is most gratefully received!

Occupation Interests / The mystery and the monkey (can you help identify?)
« on: Tuesday 10 July 07 16:25 BST (UK)  »
The following is a re-post of a thread found in http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,242669.msg1322264.html

Perhaps it is better suited here?

...

In my collection of old photographs is a picture of my Gt Gt Grandfather, James Martin (1851-1934), with a group of men... and a monkey.

It's a fascinating photo (not least as some of the faces are quite terrifying and some of the people in the foreground look like understudies for The Seven Dwarves!) but also because I have no idea what was going on, that was important enough to warrant a photo being taken.

Here's a link to the photo: http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=726492313&size=l

Go ahead and download it or zoom in on it to have a better look if needed.

I have read the word "Albert" on their caps and they have ribbons attached to the caps too, so i'm guessing its some special occasion. My Gt Gt Grandfather was a platelayer for most of his years and I suspect that this has something to do with the railways and/or a Royal visit?

..but can anyone shed some/any better informed light on this mysterious photo.

Interesting also to see a pet monkey on my Gt Gt Grandfather's shoulder - particularly as my own father hates them!

Kent / Yarrow in Sandwich, Kent
« on: Wednesday 18 October 06 08:43 BST (UK)  »
Hello, i'm searching for details on Albert Yarrow and his wife Esther who lived in Sandwich, Kent.

Albert was born in Little Thetford, Cambridgeshire and moved to Sandwich (his nephew John moved to Dover). At a guess, Albert married Esther there as she was of Sandwich.

I have a photo of Esther standing outside their house http://www.flickr.com/photos/familytreeuk/262952394/ in Sandwich.

According to my late Gt Grandmother (Albert's great niece), he died around the 1930s and his wife Esther lived for a few more years and may have died in the 1940s.

I'd like to find the marriage between Albert and Esther. It is believed that they did not have any children.

There's more Yarrow info on my website: www.familytreeuk.co.uk/Yarrow

Cambridgeshire / Little Downham Church
« on: Friday 13 October 06 10:48 BST (UK)  »
My paternal family have been through Little Downham church many times for various occasions.

I just stumbled across this terrible news story and thought that I would mention it - thankfully, it seems that only a part of the church has been damaged but I'm sure that it will have a serious impact on the parishoners. Of course, it could have been much worse.
